What a great premise for a novel – a serial killer on a Jury – and how well delivered! This is a pacy, exciting read, perfect for a vacation (or long train trip in my case). Definitely recommending!
A great hook and the book lives up to it!

Thanks to Netgalley; I received this as an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Some time ago I read Eddie Flynn #1, and I liked it, but not very much because I couldn’t seem to really care about Flynn. What a difference now! The author has made Flynn more than just likable. He is easy to root for, and I was really rooting for him! This was the best legal thriller I’ve read in a long time. The plot was a bit complicated but very well executed. The chapters alternated between Flynn (in first person) and the bad guy (in 3rd person as “Kane”), and it was easy to follow and know who was telling the story. I’m a civil trial attorney but I love reading the legal thrillers that are in the criminal arena. The courtroom scenes here (and there are plenty!) are spot-on and I can just see the players in my mind as the trial progresses. It was loads of fun, but also pretty tense at times. There was a bit of a surprise twist at the end….the bad guy wasn’t the guy I imagined him to be after all. I absolutely loved it. This was #4 in the series, but it didn’t seem to matter that I had not read #2 or #3. It was full and complete just as is, and I really appreciate that the ending wrapped everything up. I absolutely hate cliffhangers; there’s NO cliffhanger here. This author obviously respects his readers. Highly recommended for lovers of thrillers and especially legal thrillers.
It is the trial of the century in New York. A Hollywood star has been accused of murdering his starlet wife and his head of security. Everything points to the actor having done it but he maintains his innocence. With an innocent man on trial, and a serial killer on the jury, Thirteen is an intense legal thriller.
The action starts from page one. We are introduced to Joshua Kane, the serial killer. He is a hauntingly evil person and an extremely intelligently psychopath. His evil acts are well planned and well executed.
Enter Robert “Bobby” Solomon, a Hollywood star, who stands accused of murdering his movie star wife and their head of security. Solomon maintains his innocence. Luckily for Bobby, Rudy Carp, the attorney hired by the studio to represent him, decides to retain Eddie Flynn to handle the police witnesses. Flynn is a con man turned lawyer with a good legal reputation. Eddie only handles cases where he believes his client is innocent.
There is a lot of action happening as the defense gears up for trial and Joshua Kane manipulates the legal system for his game and gain. Eddie Flynn becomes lead attorney when Rudy Carp drops out. Bobby Solomon couldn’t wish for a better advocate. The action continues to escalate, with each day of the trial. The tension builds with day of the trial until the end.
I was totally engrossed. When life interrupted and I had to stop reading, I couldn’t wait to get back. Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh is an intense and masterful legal thriller. A serial killer on the jury – think about it.
I highly recommend this book for its story and it’s incredible characters. Thank you #Netgalley and #Orion for approving my request for an ARC. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
TH1RTE3N by Steve Cavanagh
Eddie Flynn #4
Suspend belief here and there while enjoying the twists and turns provided in this legal thriller as you watch Eddie Flynn, once conman now lawyer, defend an innocent man while the true killer sits on the jury.
Told from the viewpoint of both Eddie Flynn and Joshua Kane, the serial killer, this story gives you insight into the thinking of both men as they play a deadly game. Kane’s game is always lethal and one should NEVER trust him while Eddie is a man with a moral compass that points true north.
As a person who often reads the end of the book before the middle I was still surprised a few times in this book. I kind of liked that aspect although I couldn’t quite believe that a serial killer would be quite as highly evolved and capable as Kane was in this book…even an intelligent killer would not be able to accomplish all he did in his twisted killing, maneuvering and all the rest. That said, the story was well written and kept me reading as I waited to see what would happen next.
Not having read the first three books in the series wasn’t a huge problem but I did wonder at times what had happened to separate Eddie from his wife and daughter, what his conman past was and whether or not he would end up in a relationship with someone in the future.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Flat Iron Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4 Stars
Love when you take a chance on a book and it turns out being spectacular. The characters in this book are insane, in every form of the word; crazy, unpredictable, mad, mentally unstable, shocking, outrageous. I don’t know if Steve Cavanagh is a genius or a little mad, himself. The rollercoaster narrative that he has created is brilliantly put together. The staggering of POVs and the creativity of his character development sets the plot twists up perfectly. The story throws everything in your face from the prologue forward. Recommended for anyone who likes fast-paced, legal thrillers. 5 stars.
Thank you to #NetGalley for this ARC of #Thirteen
Great legal thriller with a touch of creepy.
I’d heard a lot about this book and it didn’t disappoint. Kane is surely one of the cleverest and most frightening villains ever to grace the pages of a crime fiction novel. I’d put him up there with Hannibal Lecter and on that same note, Mr Cavanagh delivers suspense in much the same way as Thomas Harris. The hero of the tale, flawed but brilliant lawyer Flynn, is someone you would always want on your side when the odds are stacked against you. I heard this on Audiobook but am certainly going to be buying more of Mr Cavanagh’s novels. In another comparison with Harris, the twist at the end is on a par with Red Dragon.
