Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah’s voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out why.
Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah’s pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

This has a really engaging voice and narrative style. This is in my must-finish-later list, but it’s hooking enough that I watched the TV series later because I left my book at home in Bangladesh.
i learned quite a bit from this book. i recommend it to anyone looking for something original.
it’s perfect. it’s amazing. it’s sad. but most of all, it’s truthful and just wonderful!
it was reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy nice
Poorly written dogshit of odious intent. A kernel of a good idea was in here, but the author couldn’t get out of his own way and had to pander to his perceived audience while hyper-sexualizing his female characters.
Honestly, love the book more than the show! Read the whole book in a day and could not put it down until I finished it.
A must read for all parents and educators.
The little things can help or hurt. Unfortunately for Hannah Baker, more of them hurt. As an individual who has bipolar disorder, I know how the smallest things can trigger suicidal thoughts. And, just like in the novel, they can build on each other in unexpected ways. The book was a good read, with the two different, alternating viewpoints helping to see the story in two different ways. And, despite the fact that Clay is in fact listening to the tapes, meaning we all know how it ends up, there’s still an element of hope throughout the story that gets whittled away with each tape.
This is how it feels to be depressed. I’ll end this review with an excerpt from a fanfiction that I wrote:
“I don’t hate you!” David exclaimed. “I love you! You’re so kind and funny! Dark, yes, but still! I can’t think of a single reason to try to kill yourself!”
“David, in the moment, you don’t just think of reasons why you want to die. You also fail to see a reason to live,” Jonathan said, looking up from his phone.
And this is really true, now isn’t it?
This will be my 3rd time reading this book. It is truly amazing. It really shows you how every action has a reaction and a domino effect. Everything we do and say is taken differently by someone who could make it worse then it was. I reread this book again with it now being a Netflix original. I also read the copy this time around that was the 10th anniversary edition with the original ending. And I will say I’m so glad that he didn’t have it end up being the ending of the book. Because I would have been furious
Thirteen Reasons Why…what a powerful and emotional book. Through some audio cassette tapes, we follow Clay as he listens and learns the reasons a classmate took her own life. Be prepared for such heavy subject matter when you pick up this book.
I loved the unique way we learn what happened to Hannah. We hear her telling us through her cassettes, but we also get flashbacks from the things Clay remembers as he listens to her tale. The stories are sad, some will make you angry, some will make you long for a different ending…but they are genuine and real and hopefully they will open some eyes to what can cause such a young person to go down this dark path. Hopefully, by reading this book, some people will notice when some of the signs mentioned are there in a classmate or friend. Hopefully, by remembering Hannah’s story, we can prevent another’s life from ending too soon.
My only criticism is that the alternation of the tapes and Clay’s own thoughts was sometimes confusing. I’m a fan of alternating points of view, but sometimes, especially when it was every other sentence, it was a bit much to follow.
As sad as this book is, it has forever changed my life! It is by far one of my favorite books of all time!
