Thirteen… Unlucky for some. Including me.The woman I loved left me on the thirteenth. Thirteen months of living together and she walked out the door without looking back, straight into another man’s arms. She was kind enough to leave something to remind me of her: thirteen thousand pounds worth of debt.Thirteen; the day I lost my nuts. Well, I didn’t lose them, cancer took them from me. Better … them, cancer took them from me. Better to be a man without balls than one without life.
Still, thirteen sucked… until it didn’t.
Until her.
Thirteen might just be my new lucky number.
Thirteen is book #4 in the ‘Love by Numbers’ series. It is interconnected but can be read as a standalone.

When the love of his life leaves him, Harry (H) thinks things can’t get any worse, and the number 13 really is unlucky. But, you know what they say, when you hit rock bottom, there’s only one way to go, and that’s up. When H meets Delilah, he may have met his match, although she has secrets and turmoil of her own. Their matched humor, personalities, and attitudes can help push them through just about anything. Can’t it? Can you overcome this much heartache and get through all the secrets? Will the number 13 stay unlucky for funny man H? Or will Delilah help change his mindset?
I know I’m reading this series all out of order, pretty much backwards, but actually it doesn’t matter and I loved this story.
Two people who are missing something that makes them feel a little bit less than they should, until the person comes along who sees everything and makes them whole. Delilah and Harry, Lilah and H, two very loveable characters. This is their story.
Sweet, fun, sexy, funny heartwrenching and emotional, this book had a bit of everything. It made me smile, laugh, swoon and dab my wet eyes a little as well as wanting to set a particular goat on a certain very nasty piece of work. I loved the banter and depth of feeling between Lilah and H and what they gave back to each other. It kept me turning the pages until the very end. Beautifully written, it tugged on my heartstrings. I loved seeing more of the Fox brothers too (especially Issac) they all have such great interactions together. Now perhaps I need to go to the beginning of this fabulous series
4.5 long live goats and GOA stars
It’s not often you read a story that gives you the full spectrum of your emotions and does so without losing it’s central message or does so seamlessly.
Thirteen is that story.
E.S. Carter has once again delivered a heartfelt story that combines the laughter of innocent family ribbing, the tears of loss and grief, and the horror of domestic violence and yet does so with graceful dignity and respect for it’s characters and subject matter.
Harry is every family’s affable fool. He’s good for a laugh and will give as good as he takes, but there are much deeper layers to this man; and his loyalty, determination, protectiveness and ability to love unconditionally are brought centre stage in this book.
And he’s shines so brilliantly, I just adored him, just as his “Bunny Girl” does.
Delilah, just as her with the meaning of her name is a true delight.
The perfect match for Harry in every way. She teases and challenges him, seduces him and together their broken pieces make them whole.
To steal the author’s own words, they are both “extraordinary”.
As is this story.a
Thirteen is book four in the Love by Numbers series by E.S. Carter. This is Harry’s story, Jake Fox’s best friend but more of a brother to all of the Fox brothers. This one is a little more light hearted than the other books in this series. It can definitely be read as a stand alone but all of the Fox brothers are present in this book and you would enjoy them more if you know their stories.
Harry David Brown, otherwise known as “H,” is Jake’s best friend. Jake the movie star, the sexiest man alive! H has had a string of bad luck, all associated with the number thirteen. He is now cancer free, but also car free and apartment free and job free. What he is not free of is debt, thanks to his ex-girlfriend. On the day that H is volunteering at Josh’s school, it seems like his luck just might be about to change when he sees her. The woman getting out of her muscle car wearing a bunny suit. He couldn’t tear his eyes away.
Delilah Chastity Tremere or Lilah, is a Physiotherapist who lost a bet and is playing bunny to a bunch of children when she saw the huge, attractive man getting out of the tiny, ridiculous banana yellow car. Lilah has also had a string of bad luck, including getting out of a disastrous marriage. This is the first time in a long time she’s felt an attraction to anyone.
Lilah and H embark on a string of hilarious sort of dates as they get to know each other. They share their quirky sense of humors. But they share so much more as well. When Harry looks at her, he only sees her, a sexy, beautiful, perfect woman.
“I’ve waited my whole life to be someone’s extraordinary.”
Lilah’s past isn’t ready to let her go yet, though, in more ways than one. But, Harry knows that Lilah just might be “the one!” And he’s not backing down. He plans to stick by her no matter what the universe decides to throw at them. Because he already thinks of her as his!
“My Lilah. My Bunny Girl.”
I loved this one. I had met Harry in the other books but didn’t know him well. He always seemed like a jokester. But there is so much more to him. He and Lilah clearly were meant to be from the start. I loved Lilah’s strength. She had been through so much. I also loved the relationship between Harry and the Fox brothers. They clearly were so much more than just buddies. They had each other’s backs!
The next book in the series entitled One, is Isaac Fox and Flynn’s story. I have to confess that I have already read this book because I read the series out of order, and believe me when I say, you’re not going to want to miss it. I love this series so much and I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!
“Thirteen…unlucky for some, but not me.”
Sweet, romantic and beautifully written story two survivors who connect on a deep level and find their extra; their extra-ordinary.
They’ve both had more than their share of health problems and lived to tell their story. As survivors, they still struggle with self-worth. Their personal lives have contributed even more to that struggle.
But when they connect, it’s instantaneous and irrevocable. There is humor and sadness and fear and so much hope; so much beauty in their love.
I like this story It is well written and quite and engaging read. The journey that the characters go through was well thought out.
E.S. Carter has composed a fabulous storyline for us here with amazing characters in the form of Harry, funny and wonderful, and Lilah, who has suffered but is wonderful. When these two meet expect to have a laugh. They both have suffered financially, medically and heart-wise but they see in each other exactly what they need. This is a warm hearted and humourous story that will leave you feeling good and well satisfied with the ending. Amazing characters and very well written. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED
This is such a great series. Thirteen was a great addition to it. It had lots of hotness, humor, emotions, lust and love. The storyline was great and the characters were wonderful. I recommend this to all. It is a must read. I received it from booksprout and voluntarily left my review.
Harry aka H has had some really crappy luck and it always seems to be related to the number 13 and well life pretty much sucks right now but after getting roped into helping at a school fair things seems to be on the up after meeting Bunny aka Delilah. I just love the fact they have both been through a lot and are both proud people but seem to have finally met their one that will show them they can lean on someone else. There is plenty of fun, tension, hope and the will for a happy ending while you get to know them both that will keep you hooked until the very end

ES Carter has done it again! Another beautiful story in the Love By Numbers series. This was funny and had me laughing out loud and smiling. The banter is brilliant! There were also moments of sadness that had me tearing up, and some drama that had my heart pumping with adrenalin in places too! You get pulled into their world, where they are both broken; but together Harry and Delilah heal each other. Fabulous characters, great storyline, beautiful writing!
Thirteen is book four in the Love by Numbers series, but can be read as a stand alone. I think they are better read in order though.
Thirteen is unlucky for Harry. The woman he loved left him on the thirteenth, with a large amount of debt.
Thirteen is the day he lost his nuts to testicular cancer.
Thirteen sucked for him, until he met Lilah at his brother Josh’s school. She was his thirteenth date. His previous twelve dates had been a total disaster.
Lilah is a physiotherapist who meets Harry when he helps Josh Fox at the school. Lilah and H embark on a string of hilarious dates.
Will she be H’s lucky number thirteen? Read the book to find out.
I loved their banter. There were so many hilarious moments in this book. They both had body, and self confidence issues, but together they were extraordinary. I loved Lilah’s strength. After everything she went through, she never gave up.
I recommend everyone to read this book that loves a funny, sweet story.
Harry is the happy-go-lucky, chilled best friend of Jake Fox and the rightful star of his own story in the Love By Numbers series.
After a life-threatening illness, Harry has recovered physically, but mentally and emotionally he still bears the scars.
He meets Delilah at a school fete, where he’s doing a favour for another Fox brother, Josh. She’s as happy-go-lucky and slightly crazy, much as Harry was before his illness, and she finally brings the missing spark back to his life.
Delilah is also nursing scars and secrets from her past. But by hiding them from Harry, she feels as though she’s being treated as a normal, whole person.
A series of disastrous, funny, wind-up dates follow, and both of them feel like they have finally found the other person that ‘gets’ them.
These two are just the most brilliant couple. Delilah is funny, smart and strong. Harry is just downright freaking adorable, and if anyone deserves a happy ever after, it’s him.
As a couple, they still have more trials and tribulations to endure, but it can only make them stronger together.
ES Carter has created a wonderful set of characters in this series. The storylines are engaging, the characters are well rounded and the whole thing has a rich, comforting feeling about it. Absolutely blooming wonderful.
This is book 4 in the Love By Number series…and every time I read a new book in the series I fall in love…this time falling in love with broken Harry and broken Lilah. But these two broken are made whole with each other, and like a true comedy of errors, the reader will laugh and find happiness with these two characters. The strength in both of these two main characters is so empowering to follow their ways in our own lives. ES Carter has yet again outdid herself in another of her books! I have a huge pile of quotes from this book that are inspiring to follow, hope all other readers find the strength and happiness that ES has given to Harry and Delilah!
“Lilah didn’t cope, she excelled. Life gave her lemons, and she said ‘**** the lemonade, pass me Tequila and some salt”
If you have read the previous Love By Numbers books you will already be aware of Harry, Jake’s best friend, and his sarcastic, self deprecating humour.
Harry has suffered, his heart and bank balance were broken by his previous girlfriend, and his confidence has taken a bit of a knock with the loss of the accessories to his Davidson. What it hasn’t taken is his sense of humour. Everyone needs a Harry in their life, he would make the BEST friend.
I love the humour in this book, the first meeting between Lilah and Harry is hilarious, and only gets more so when she takes him for a spin and a drink! Despite her own losses, Lilah is spunky, feisty and fun and exactly what Harry needs, she is his perfect match.
This is a story of love between two people, slightly damaged but never broken. You will laugh and love along with them throughout the highs and lows of their story.
“Friday the thir-f*ing-teenth. Unlucky for some. Including me.”
Thirteen by E.S. Carter is an absolutely beautiful and touching story laced throughout with tons of humor. Harry Brown has lost a part of himself and is feeling like less than a man, Delilah Tremere is trying to stand on her own after a marriage that has left her feeling like less than a woman.
“Lilah didn’t cope, she excelled. Life gave her lemons, and she said ‘F* the lemonade, pass me Tequila and some salt.’”
From their very first meeting that involved a banana-mobile and a bunny head, you know that H has met his match in Lilah, a strong and vibrant heroine. I fell in love with Lilah as much as with H. As one bad date leads to another, their chemistry cannot be denied.
“I take what is now mine.
As she gives me all that she is.
As we share what we both have.
Two halves that seem broken but together repair.”
I adored every word in this lovely story that on one page broke my heart then on the next would have me laughing out loud. A tale of the resilience of body and spirit. I was lifted up.
Thirteen is part of the Love by the Numbers series of stories with interconnecting characters and could be read as a standalone.
“Thirteen… unlucky for some, but not me.“
E.S. Carter delivered once again an extraordinary and unique story that tugs at your heartstrings creating a strong emotional connection with the characters.
“My mission: Make the cute guy with the sad eyes laugh.”
Harry and Delilah are two broken persons that become whole again and start to feel alive only when they find each other.
They are PERFECT together and their humour will make you laugh out loud while reading their journey.
“You’re her extra.”
“And I can see she’s yours.”
