The “extraordinary” (Booklist) novel of one man’s quest to find the source of his nightmare and to reverse it before he becomes…nothing at all. This #1 national bestseller from Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, “pulsates with evil…it will have you on the edge of your seat” (Publishers Weekly). “You can’t do anything… It’s gone too far. You understand, Halleck? Too…far. Attorney Billy … Too…far.
Attorney Billy Halleck seriously enjoys living his life of upper-class excess. He’s got it all#65533;—an expensive home in Connecticut, a loving family…and fifty extra pounds that his doctor repeatedly warns will be the death of him. Then, in a moment of carelessness, Halleck commits vehicular manslaughter when he strikes a jaywalking old woman crossing the street. But Halleck has some powerful local connections, and gets off with a slap on the wrist…much to the fury of the woman’s mysterious and ancient father, who exacts revenge with a single word: “Thinner.” Now a terrified Halleck finds the weight once so difficult to shed dropping effortlessly—and rapidly—by the week. Soon there will be nothing left of Billy Halleck…unless he can somehow locate the source of his living nightmare and reverse what’s happened to him before he utterly wastes away…

one of my favorite stories.
Truely awesome story almost like a fable.
Ending just inspiring and left me smiling despite how things ended up.
Loved the concept and often these simplicity of the novel.
Very clever twists only the way Stephen King can do.
I was staying off this one for a while, but no amount of preparation could have actually prepared me for it. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t read a book by King that I didn’t like. I don’t know why it was released under a pseudonym, as I think it’s on point with his other novels.
As always, I loved his flawed characters. Although I didn’t find myself cheering for them, they were realistic, relatable in some ways, and well fleshed out. I also loved the dark irony sprinkled here and there, as well as the shocking twists that made a dark tale even darker.
Body horror isn’t new to me (Hellraiser fan here), but this book hit too close to home way toooo many times. The rapid weight loss and the fact the character was actually cursed (as opposed to just feeling cursed with excessive weight loss over a short period of time) kept reminding me of personal health issues again and again. Had this been another author, I probably would have given up on the book.
Fortunately, there was a light at the end of the tunnel, as the book ended with a moment of epiphany for the hero (or rather anti-hero), which finally became his saving grace, despite a tad too late.
Okay, so I highly enjoyed this story. It was a little out of King’s normal but it was right up my alley. I liked the thought process behind it and where it all went. I didn’t love the relationship between the husband and wife but I didn’t blame the husband either. Kind of a trippy read.
I enjoyed the Audible Reader of this book. He took the characters to a new level.
Love king books
This is one of my favourite Stephen King books. I found it original, fun and creepy!
I hope you enjoy 🙂
Writing as Richard Bach, King crafts a deceptively simple story of revenge. A gypsy curse takes over a man’s life, but I found it hard to sympathize with him, which is the reason I couldn’t give it more stars. I like to like or at least be able to root for the protagonist.
In true Stephen King form, this is a page turner full of unexpected, scary and horror at its best.
Not his best. Start elsewhere, but for the love of God, start.
I have read almost everything by Stephen King and I have to say this is my favorite of his stories. The books he published under Richard Bachman have an element of darkness that is more about people and less about general horror. There’s always something that the reader can relate with in a way that makes us reflect on ourselves while we’re completely engrossed in the story. Everyone can be cruel sometimes and karma can come to us all. Even if you don’t believe in gypsies and curses few books illustrate the concept better than Thinner.
I loved the book, it was a very original story. I hated the movie. Read the book, don’t judge it by the movie.
IN true Stephen King fashion you don’t see the next event happening. This was written years ago and it was one I read years ago but it sure made an impression on me. I remember it well.
Not that impressed with this one.
I loved the book. It was a quick read, mostly because I couldn’t put it down! Having always been fluffy myself, it was intriguing to think about eating something that would allow me to eat what I want and still loose weight.
Excellent storyline.
Stephen King, writing originally under his Richard Bachman pen name, crafts a scary thriller about a man who accidentally kills someone, and in retaliation a curse is laid on him to cause him to continually lose weight, wasting away daily.
WOW. I loved this book. It has you from the first page to the last. The ending is not the expected one.
Stephen King delivers in this chilling novel about one man’s fight against fate. Reading one of King’s books is like having a camping buddy who is an excellent story-teller. His dialogues are down to Earth human interaction that clearly define his one of a kind characters.
True to form, Stephen King delivers an ending you won’t see coming!
original and classic King
