Lisa Gray explodes onto the literary stage with this taut, edge-of-the-seat thriller, and her headstrong protagonist Jessica Shaw, reminiscent of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, delivers a serious punch.
An emotionally wounded PI goes in search of information about her murdered mother after receiving an anonymous teaser. What she discovers is that she is not who she thinks she is and that someone wants her dead. Two “coincidences,” along with an almost blatant arrow at the killer, weaken the plot. But the suspense mounts throughout the book as the past and present interweave seamlessly. The climax veers off the genre trope, but the conclusion packs a lot of satisfaction. This is a debut author worth watching, IMO.
Thin Air is an exciting whodunit that kept me guessing until the end. PI Jessica Shaw is so capable and strong, I couldn’t get enough of her!
I read a lot, and I’ve never read a book with this premise. THIN AIR is unique. And the way the author, Lisa Gray, pulls it off is exceptional. I enjoyed the clever twists and turns that led to an incredibly satisfying end. I highly recommend this book.
Really enjoyed this story. If you like thrillers, check it out.
I had no idea who the killer was – Excellent read! I loved how the past and the present are intermingled. At first, they seem so unrelated then… Bam! Jessica is a very intriguing heroine which also made this a great read.
Author’s First Crime Novel and She Nailed It! Great characters, interesting story, great flow … just plain and simply an enjoyable read from start to finish. If this is your genre, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed … and … I think you will want to get the author’s Jessica Shaw Book 2 to continue the reading pleasure.
My Mom’s Book Club chose this for our September BOTM (Book of the Month). We had never read a Lisa Gray book. I will now be looking for more from Lisa Gray. I found Thin Air to be easy to read. The characters were easy to enjoy, some I liked while some I did not. The storyline was easy to follow and kept me entertained from the very beginning. Thin Air is the first book in the Jessica Gray series, and I will be interested to read more of this series.
This is a mystery book with many interesting twists and turns. There are a few twists and turns that could have been left out and a few that needed a little more attention but overall, I really enjoyed taking the ride that Lisa Gray wrote. I thought it was interesting that the first book in the series has a PI investigating herself. I am intrigued to see where the next book will take Jessica Shaw.
This book was my Amazon Prime First Read selection for May 2019. It’s the first book in a series with the main character Jessica Shaw. I generally like mystery/suspense series with a strong woman as the central character. Patricia Cornwell’s series with Dr. Kay Scarpetta; Sue Grafton’s series with Kinsey Millhone; the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich; Tracy Crosswhite series by Robert Dugoni. While I enjoyed this book, I’m not certain if I really want to read more books with Jessica Shaw as the central character. I checked and the second one is available with the third due out in Nov. 2020. Maybe I’ll give the second one a try but not right away.
This unpredictable who-dunnit was the perfect weekend read, and allowed me to immerse myself in the streets of beautiful Pasadena. Recommended!
In this first book of the Jessica Shaw series, the protagonist uniquely investigates her own disappearance when she was three years old. Jessica is now 25 and a private investigator who finds herself in Los Angeles, where her mother’s murder remains unsolved. As she works her way through her mother’s unsavory past, she discovers the truth about her parents and makes peace with her past. Peppered with lively and flawed characters, this was a tightly plotted and riveting tale of murder, blackmail, and a whole lot of alcoholic beverages. Cheers!
Good mystery.
Since I didn’t have a lot of time to read, I used audible while driving to and from work. I did go in as well and read some of the book, The story line is good, and it jumps around from past to present. It’s the story of a couple of murders one 25 years ago, and one present day. A private eye Jessica is brought into the story, when a “Missing Person” bulletin is sent to her that gets her attention.
I am usually pretty good at guessing endings, but this one too me. I am now going back to re-read a couple of parts.
PI Jessica receives an anonymous email about a missing child, the problem. It is a picture of her! This book is a how she delves into the mystery of the disappearance and her history…fact or fiction?? Good story could easily become series…
This has all the things I enjoy in a good mystery: well written, great characters, lots of twists and the promise of more to come as it’s the start of a series.
Jessica was a PI. After her father died she started traveling picking up cases along the way. Until her last case was emailed to her. A 25 year old murder and missing child case. The child’s photo was included. It was Jessica, she remembered the doll.
Enjoyed how the plot unfolded with no telegraphed solution early on. Writing was a bit adverb heavy in places.
It was pretty clear early on what the basics were, and I kept waiting for the protagonist to catch on. It was a bit tedious near the end.
Couldn’t put it down!!
This is the story of private investigator – Jessica Shaw. She is sent a photo of a missing little girl and is asked to help solve the girl’s whereabouts, and Jessica is stunned to receive a picture of herself. She had no idea she was a missing child.
Jessica heads to LA to try and find out what happened to her family and her real past. She discovers that her mother was murdered on the night Jessica disappeared. Jessica is determined to solve her own case, and starts to ask questions. But asking questions proves to be a dangerous business. While trying to hide her true identity, Jessica finds that people are piecing together who she really is and Jessica is warned that someone is after her. Not knowing who to trust, she decides to not take the advice to leave town, and get to the bottom of her own past.
This was a pretty good book. The book wrapped up a little faster than I think it should have. Came to a peak, and then quickly came down the otherside without much suspense. That would be my biggest criticism. But overall, it was a decent story and an easy read.
