Chana was broke, jobless, no clothes, homeless, broken-hearted and alone. Peter had emptied her bank accounts, including the small inheritance her parents had left her. She had been sleeping in the subway station, only allowing herself a small cup of coffee and a snack for her daily survival. The bartender asked if she wanted another drink, but without looking up, she declined, saying she was broke. His voice almost seemed familiar. He told her this one was on him, and she looked up into a beautiful face with mesmerizing eyes and knew she could not have met him and forgotten him. He was dressed as an elf. The drink he made was a creamy liquid with a steamy vapor rising from it. She was hesitant to drink it and wouldn’t tell her what it was, except that it would ease her pain. Sure enough, it took away her hunger pains and made her feel better in general.
She thought back to when she had met Peter. She was the science officer on the spaceship Magula, which explored space and alien planets. The ship was owned by the captain, Peter Johnson – or maybe he lied about that? When the ship docked on Earth for a month so the crew could celebrate the holidays, he asked her to move into his penthouse in Manhattan, and asked for access to her accounts so he could invest her earnings for her. They were arguing more and more. When a redhead used the code to walk into the penthouse, she admired Peter’s redecorating – then threw her arms around him and kissed him! Peter turned to Chana and told her to leave – his wife and he wanted to be alone, and she was “fired” and not to show up for “work” again! He threw her out with nothing but a coat. It was later that she saw he had drained her bank accounts as well.
The bartender returned and gave her a refill of the drink and a sandwich. She finished eating, then when he went to wait on others, she left. He should not have to pay out of his own pocket to care for her. She sought out a church, but the doors were locked and she sat by the door hoping they would find her at midnight Mass. The snow covered her and she couldn’t feel her feet. Then the sexy bartender came up and took her arm. He told her to come with him or she would freeze to death. His hands started glowing and she felt warmth move through her. He came from the planet Wistnoven, the same as Peter – and she panicked!
The bartender introduced himself as Falcon Dronata, special agent for the Intergalactic Council’s Interplanetary Crimes Unit, and told her they have been after Peter Johnson, also known as Pioneca Joranok, for some time now. Pioneca was the interstellar sex trafficking ring but was a murderer as well. He asked her to let him transport her to his ship. Something kept telling her to trust him, and it really didn’t matter at this point with nowhere else to go. Even his ship felt familiar to her! She started to fall asleep and he carried her to a bed in his ship. But as he made her comfortable, he gently moved her hair from her cheek and she thought she heard him softly whisper, “Come back to me Chana. I need you to remember.” What part did Chana play in the case against Pioneca? Why doesn’t she remember? What went wrong?
This was a very good story with a mystery attached! The story line moves along at the perfect pace, the characters very realistic. Grab your copy and enjoy the story. Despite being short, it has lots going on and will pull the reader right in!
