Lucky Denver has wandering feet, sticky fingers and an unreliable moral compass—he’s never had a home and he’s not so sure he cares about what he’s missing.
Arnold Kreed who runs a small-town B&B knows what a home should be. So does his home, The Oaks—aka Mildred—and she has some very definite opinions on who should stay and who should go.
Mildred wants Lucky to stay—and while Kreed is … surprised, he can’t really blame the old girl. He’s getting sort of attached himself. Lucky might be fine with the house’s eccentricities, but he’s not so sure Kreed will be fine with the man attached to Lucky’s real name. When Kreed falls ill, Lucky needs to make a decision—wander away like he’s always done or stay and be his better self. Kreed’s hoping he’ll stay—and so is The Oaks, and Mildred has a way of getting what she wants.

The idea of a sentient house is brilliant! Not only that, Mildred was also particularly opinionated, using her plumbing, boards, all her components to make her thoughts known and state her feelings…especially regarding who she wanted inside.
Mildred most definitely wanted Lucky. I guess she has sensed the goodness hidden behind his street-rough exterior, and how much he needed a home. I enjoyed seeing Lucky fitting in with Mildred and her owner, Kreed. They’ve had up and downs, especially when Lucky’s questionable past was brought to light and almost ruined their peace and livelihood.
I loved everything about this book: Mildred, Lucky, Kreed and all their friends. The house and her unique personality added a quirky charm to the sweet romance between the main characters, all rounded up with the sense of belonging thanks to the supporting community. Can’t recommend enough.
I loved Thief in the Light. It was a fantastic story. There were so many interesting characters beyond the MCs, everyone had a voice and it was so enjoyable to read. And I loved the house! Kreed and Lucky were absolutely great men, their story was so sweet, gradual and just perfect. The story was well-paced, great dialogue interesting situations that helped carry the story along. I loved Kreed and Lucky and I hope that they will be in the rest of the series. And I loved that it was a story in Canada! I definitely recommend this book.
I chuckled, I cried, I was furious, I was afraid and sometimes I just said, Ahhh…
The was a beautiful M/M romance with only a tad of steam. Two lonely people, a community of sweet busy-bodies and a crazy creepy house make this a fantastic read.
Lucky has been running for so long he’s forgotten what staying in one place might feel like. While trying to hitchhike a ride on a dark and lonely road, he falls in a ditch and an unlikely person picks him up. Thus begins the reinvention of the “new and improved” Lucky Denver meets Arnold, just-call-me Kreed and his spooky B & B, The Oaks aka Mildred. She’s a fussy old house. Things and people must be approved by her or they don’t stay under her roof, maybe don’t even get in the front door! Just as things are going well, the bottom falls out. Will Kreed and Lucky be able to weather this storm? Will Lucky’s past ruin everything? Will Kreed’s former lover’s jealousy mess up their relationship?
Oh man, I loved this low steam but very romantic and poignant M/M romance. Both Lucky and Kreed have secrets that impact their reactions but Mildred is there to help. I look forward to Ms. Samms’ next book. Will it be about one of the people we’ve already met?
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through the Gay Romance Reviews and it comes highly recommended for readers of M/M who like their books with subtle steam. I give it 4.5 lovely ending stars.
Lucky Denver is homeless, on his way to the next something, when he’s run off the road into a ditch. Just receiving minor injuries he’s contemplating staying in the ditch, when Madeline, the woman who ran him into it, stops to help. Madeline shows Lucky her snotty, materialistic side so Lucky decides to help himself to her bag as payment. Madeline takes Lucky into town to The Oaks, the local B&B. She introduces Lucky to Kreed Arnold, the owner of The Oaks. Kreed offers Lucky a room for the night. Lucky realizes pretty fast that there’s something strange about The Oaks and it’s call Mildred. Kreed helps Lucky get on the straight and narrow by returning Madeline’s bag and covering for him in the process. Lucky decides to stay for awhile and help Kreed out at The Oaks. When Kreed becomes unexpectedly ill and is hospitalized, Lucky steps up and runs The Oaks so that Kreed doesn’t lose money. Madeline is surprised and slowly comes to respect him. An old ex comes to visit with his husband and trouble ensues. Lucky get’s the opportunity to set straight a part of his past and help others in the process. With the trust of Kreed, Lucky becomes the man he should’ve always been.
There are many words and phrases throughout the book that I had no idea what they meant and it stopped the flow each time I had to stop and research. This dragged the book in several places and was time consuming. I really liked the twist on the haunted house trope. Lots of great supporting characters, especially Jake. I felt the budding romance between Lucky and Kreed. This is a romance that is very light on sex and it works in this book. Definitely worth the read.
ARC received for an honest review.
