In this tantalizing thriller from a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a woman uncovers lifelong secrets as she searches for the truth behind her father’s involvement in a heist gone wrong. Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars. But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell. … plan had been shot to hell. One of them was in the hospital. One was in jail. One was dead. And one got away with it.
Arden Maxwell, the daughter of the man who disappeared all those years ago — presumably with the money, after murdering his accomplice — has never reconciled with her father’s abandonment of her and her sister. After countless personal setbacks she decides to return to her family home near mysterious Caddo Lake, and finally get answers to the many questions that torment her. Little does she know, two of her father’s co-conspirators — a war hero and a corrupt district attorney — are watching her every move.
Ledge Burnet, a rebellious teen at the time of the heist, evaded his jail sentence by enlisting in the army. Now he’s back in town to care for his ailing father — and to keep his eye on the county’s corrupt district attorney, whom he suspects was the real murderer. Although the two are bound to silence because of the crime they committed together, each has spent years waiting and hoping that the other will make a fatal misstep. But the arrival of their elusive accomplice’s daughter, Arden, who may know more about the missing money than she’s telling, sets them both on red alert. She ignites Ledge’s determination to expose the D.A.’s treachery . . . and sparks a desire he wishes to deny.

I really enjoyed this one. For once thee ding surprised me. I usually figure out “whodunnit” long before the last chapter.
Sandra Brown grips you from the very first page with a 20-year-old heist and four simple sentences about the thieves: One was in the hospital; One was in jail; One was in the morgue: and One had gotten away. So where is the money? Enter the intriguing daughter of one of the thieves, 20 years later, on a collision course with the aging criminals. I dare you to put this one down.

OK, nothing great!
Great story with a surprise twist!
Great read, a real page turner. Fantastic characters and a great twist at the end.
I love Sandra Brown. After finishing it, I don’t really know who did what.
I dId not see the end coming.
A fantastic romantic suspense. Heavier on the suspense, this story also includes action, small town gossip, family dynamics that will make your eyes huge and an almost perfect crime.
This is a fast paced story that has a great blend of history to show the events during the crime and present time. The characters are colorful and the descriptions of the location, events and dialogue were rich and vibrant which ensured I could picture the story as I read.
Part of the ending (the suspense) was a surprise and the romance was sweet. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to any who enjoys romantic suspense, robberies, intrigue and betrayal in their books!
Robbery heist gone wrong and murder, disappearance many years ago, brought to the forefront by a pregnant Arden comes home to the family home then tragedy strikes. She is determined to find out what happened to her father who has been missing for years.
Story about the crimes of the youth and the resulting consequences. Dirty DA, ex-military and long hidden stories hidden from so many. The twists and turns of the novel are typical of Sandra Brown books, adding a steamy love seen and boom a real pager turner.
The flash backs are nicely laid out to tell the story of the story and to uncover hidden parts of the story. Nicely done.
Sandra Brown’s books always have a bit of romance, suspense and danger which make them a great read! Thick as Thieves was no different. It was a fast read and I look forward to her next story! Maybe a continuation of this one???
I really REALLY wanted to like this latest book from one of my favorite authors. The last couple books turned out by Ms Brown have inspired me to be a better writer, to hype the plot twists and turns, to add a few more warts to my characters.
Sadly with Thick as Thieves I didn’t mind the story–but I have to say for Ms Brown to expect me to believe a high school kid [in the year 2000] could come up with and carry out the detailed threft and subsequent coverup is really pushing the envelope. A college kid? sure thing. Same goes for a twenty-something in grad school or law school. But high school? And get away with the crap Rusty Deyle got away with for the next 20 years?
I don’t think so. And for that I’m really sorry.
With her life in shambles, Arden Maxwell decides to move back into her childhood home and try to finally put her father’s abandonment of herself and her elder sister behind her. Even after twenty years the scandal of her father’s disappearance immediately following the theft of half a million dollars, and a murder that presumably went along with it, is still being felt. Arden is looking for answers but has no idea that her movements are being monitored by two of her father’s former accomplices, one a decorated veteran and the other the county’s corrupt District Attorney.
Ledge Burnet was a rather troubled teen when he found himself strong-armed into participating in the theft, only to find himself set up for jailtime immediately after on a drug charge, which he avoided with military service. He’s returned to his hometown to care for his ailing uncle and has taken to keeping an eye on the D.A., who he suspects is responsible for the twenty-year-old murder. Neither can make open accusations against the other without implicating themselves in the process, but each waits for the other to make a mistake. When Arden arrives, tension spikes as both men believe she may know more about the missing money than she’s letting on. She makes Ledge even more determined to take down the D.A., and keep her safe, no matter how much he’d like to deny the desire he feels for her.
This was my first read from this author and part of my recent branching back into reading more romantic suspense. I enjoyed this overall as it was different from anything I’ve read before. I liked the sparks between Ledge and Arden and his determination to keep her safe, but for her part I found Arden to be rather insufferable with her constant sniping at Ledge. I do wish Ledge had been more honest and forthcoming, but it’s also not like Arden gave him many opportunities and, in a way,, this tension between them made their relationship more satisfying in the end. This book was rather unique in terms of suspense as the identity of the villain is never in question, only when he will strike and just how far he’ll go to protect himself. I liked this aspect a lot, but I still felt like this was a little bit slow toward the middle and it took a while for the suspense to really build. I definitely didn’t expect the twist at the end and that had me wanting to go back and reread parts of the book, which I take as the mark of a gifted storyteller. I enjoyed this read and will check out more works from this author.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
20 years ago, 4 people pulled a heist for half a million dollars. Their plan went haywire and one of the guys was in the hospital, one dead, one in jail, and one disappeared with the money. Arden returns home and it is her dad that got away. She’s never believed her dad could have abandoned her so she is here to try and find answers to what happened to her dad. This book is fast paced and has many twists and turns. I have been a Sandra Brown fan for years and this book did not disappoint. I received a gifted copy from Grand Central Publishing.
Sandra brown is a great story teller, and has a way of bringing her characters to life. This is one I will re-read over and over.
This was a riveting and thrilling story that kept me guessing until the very end! It was so exciting to read with all the twists and turns, incredible characters, and intriguing mystery happening. I couldn’t put it down. This story is the definition of a page-turner! I loved it!
I will always read a new Sandra Brown story when it comes out. Ledge was a broody man and I do love me some broody men. I enjoyed this book and I also didn’t guess all of the twists. I really like when I don’t guess the twists, I had some ideas of what was going to happen, but I was pleasantly surprised with others. I really enjoyed this read.
A great page turner!
Menacing, absorbing, and well crafted!
Thick as Thieves is an intricate, steamy thrill ride that takes you to Penton, Texas and into the lives of Arden Maxwell and Ledge Burnet as they investigate and unravel all the lies, secrets, deception, and corruption that has tainted their past, and attempt to finally uncover what really happened on that one night twenty years ago.
The writing is taut and smooth. The characters are secretive, complex, and scarred. And the plot, using a past/present, back-and-forth style and told from multiple perspectives is an intense, mysterious tale filled with familial drama, police corruption, palpable chemistry, coercion, manipulation, thievery, violence, and murder.
Overall, Thick as Thieves is another adrenaline-pumping, twisty, highly satisfying page-turner by Brown that has just the right amount of suspense and romance to keep you engaged, invested, and guessing until the very last page.

Arden Maxwell’s past is riddled with so many unknowns, her father abandoned her sister and her many years ago and has never reached out. At the time he was a robbery suspect on the run who had presumably murdered his partner after completing an elaborate heist and took the money they stole and ran. For so many years they have wondered if her father was actually capable of such a crime and if what they are saying about him in town is actually true. Arden can’t take all the questions anymore, so she has decided to pack her bags and head back to their family home at Caddo Lake and get some closure. She plans on getting down to the bottom of things and finally get the answers to the questions that have haunted her for so long. But once she arrives home she realizes she isn’t the only one looking for answers…
Thick as Thieves is a spellbinding tale of suspense, secrets, love, murder, and finding truths. In this one we meet sisters Arden and Lisa, the daughters of a missing robbery suspect, who are searching for the truth about their father. Each page of this one it layered with so many secrets, non-stop action, and drama that it makes it impossible to put down. This one had me stumped pretty much the whole way through, which usually doesn’t happen as my sleuthing skills are usually good enough to sniff out the truth before I find it, but kudos to Mrs. Brown for keeping a tight lid on the truth in this one. If you like romantic suspense stories heavy on suspense and with bits of steam then I have no doubt you will enjoy this one, it had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
