In this tantalizing thriller from a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a woman uncovers lifelong secrets as she searches for the truth behind her father’s involvement in a heist gone wrong. Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars. But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell. … plan had been shot to hell. One of them was in the hospital. One was in jail. One was dead. And one got away with it.
Arden Maxwell, the daughter of the man who disappeared all those years ago — presumably with the money, after murdering his accomplice — has never reconciled with her father’s abandonment of her and her sister. After countless personal setbacks she decides to return to her family home near mysterious Caddo Lake, and finally get answers to the many questions that torment her. Little does she know, two of her father’s co-conspirators — a war hero and a corrupt district attorney — are watching her every move.
Ledge Burnet, a rebellious teen at the time of the heist, evaded his jail sentence by enlisting in the army. Now he’s back in town to care for his ailing father — and to keep his eye on the county’s corrupt district attorney, whom he suspects was the real murderer. Although the two are bound to silence because of the crime they committed together, each has spent years waiting and hoping that the other will make a fatal misstep. But the arrival of their elusive accomplice’s daughter, Arden, who may know more about the missing money than she’s telling, sets them both on red alert. She ignites Ledge’s determination to expose the D.A.’s treachery . . . and sparks a desire he wishes to deny.

Nora Roberts has done it again. Fabulous writing!
Once again Sandra Brown has delivered an incredible romantic thriller in Thick as Thieves. I have been reading Sandra Brown’s books for years, and have loved everyone. I love her characters and the descriptions of the setting. I loved every page and could not put it down. I have been reading Sandra Brown’s books for years, and have loved everyone. I loved all the surprise plot twists that happened throughout the story. Thick as Thieves is the story of Arden Maxwell and Ledge Burnet. For the past twenty years Arden has believed that her father Joe, robbed a local mercantile in Penton, Texas, killed a man and then disappeared with half a million dollars, leaving her and her older sister, Lisa as orphans. Both Arden and Ledge’s lives are forever changed by those events twenty years ago. Arden is pregnant, and has decided to move back to their house in Penton to raise her daughter. I love that the story has flashbacks to the events twenty years ago that are told from the perspective of everyone involved in the burglary. Arden reaches out to Ledge to renovate the house, not knowing of Ledge’s involvement in the burglary. As Arden searches for clues about her father, she begins a volatile relationship with Ledge. Arden and Ledge share secrets, although Ledge does not share all of his secrets with Arden. They both battle their feelings for one another. Thick as Thieves is filled with the bittersweet moments and surprise plot twists that I have come to love and expect in Sandra Brown’s stories. She did not disappoint with her delivery of those in Thick as Thieves. I loved all the surprise plot twists, and was not expecting most of them. It was an incredible story and Sandra Brown has once again proven that she is an amazing storyteller. I love that Arden and Ledge get their happily ever after, even after Arden finds out his involvement in the burglary. I love how she explains her decision to Ledge. Thick as Thieves truly kept me on the edge of my seat with everything that was happening to Arden and Ledge as they searched for clues about her father and the missing money. It was a truly wonderful story and I was so happy that everything got resolved. Although, some of the outcomes are bittersweet.
Another Well Written Book – I didn’t cheat this time and read to the end to see Who Done It – Was Very Surprised – Well written, story flows Characters are fleshed-out – don’t get me started on people saying well in real life – Guess What I read to be Entertained and This Book and Many By This Author Do That – Keeps You interested A real page turner.
Two decades ago Arden and Lisa’s father left town to never be heard from or seen again. Rumor amongst the town is that he is the one that robbed a local retail store, having been a disgruntled employee, murdered another employee who had worked there and skipped town with a large sum of cold hard cash! Enough to start life over and never have to look back. Except, he left two daughters behind…
Arden, an adult now herself and with a child on the way has decided to go back home. Back to that town her father left behind. She has had noting but crummy jobs, and hasn’t really ever landed on her feet. It was time for her to settle down and stop getting help from her older sister as well. But Lisa is not happy. She thinks that Arden is making a terrible mistake and that only bad things will come from her going back and the town bringing history back up.
The house is still there’s, and so there is no reason it should not be put to use after all this time. Why just let it sit and rot. Lisa has never sold it, nor even mentioned selling it and rightfully half of it does belong to Arden. As she starts to settle in, it soon becomes apparent that she is not wanted back there. At least one person is not afraid to try and scare her off with late night drive by’s.
Not willing to let things push her out, she realizes she has a lot of work to do and attempts to find someone who will fix the house. Remodel most, if not all of it actually. Her sister once again is pushing back on how terrible of an idea this is and that Arden should leave b before she has settled in. Lisa took off and has never regretted it. Nor thought about ever going back, why should Arden.
She finally finds someone who agrees to help, after everyone else has turned her down or mumbled apologies of being booked. As things start to progress and she starts to make learn about this contractor things about her father and that night start to slowly come out. This guy knows more than he is letting on and Arden wants to find out the truth. As she starts digging, people are taking notice and someone does not want that night to be talked about. Will Arden Discover what really happened to her father that night? Who the real robber or robbers and kill or killers are? Can she trust this new contractor with not only the remodels but her life, as he is the only one willing to work with her in this town?
Very good, fast paced read. I read this novel in less than a day. The author gives you just enough to keep you hooked and flipping the pages faster and faster, but not enough so that you can figure out what really happened and who was all there. Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for the free book!
A stunning uncovering of secrets, lies and corruption! Sandra Brown has indeed brought her A game with the release of THICK AS THIEVES and I could not have loved it more. The drama and mystery from the start hooked my attention quickly and held it throughout the twists and turns of finding out what truly happened that night. I loathed putting it down for even a minute before finding out the whole story.
Arden Maxwell is an interesting character. She’s returned home two decades after the night that changed her life forever and just wants answers once and for all of what happened to her father. Did he really abandon his family for the draw of almighty greed or did he meet with foul play? Arden has secrets of her own that are slowly given to the reader as we fall under her spell and begin to hope for a brighter future for her.
Ledge Burnet won me over fairly quickly. We know from the start that he was the troubled teen that took part in the heist for his own reasons, but Arden doesn’t know he was involved as they begin to connect over remodeling her house, his family business and his concern over the shoddy DA having her in his sights.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an interwoven mystery that takes many twists and turns before light is shed on what truly happened. The added hint of a romantic entanglement between Arden and Ledge adds a great dimension to the story line.
As usual, Sandra Brown has written a solid mystery with romantic undertones. In this novel, 4 people are involved in a robbery, but one is intent on double crossing all of them and keeping the money.
Fast forward to years later, and Arden Maxwell has returned to her hometown and her childhood home. She hasn’t seen her father since the night of the robbery, when he was blamed for the gruesome murder of Brian Foster. Arden’s older sister, Lisa, didn’t want her returning to their old house. But, Arden feels a sense of loss and abandonment.
In town. there is a long simmering feud between Ledge, a carpenter, and Rusty, the DA. Rusty is slimy, and Ledge has a questionable past. Ledge is keeping an eye on Arden, but so is Rusty.
Ledge and Arden become involved, but they are in danger from Rusty. Even Lisa isn’t safe from Rusty. It all comes to an explosive head when confessions are made.
Another solid entry from Sandra Brown.
