Welcome to Holiday Hills, where the coffee’s fresh and there’s magic in the air… two crushing on the town’s police chief. But of course, I’d never let that cat out of the bag. I’m still dealing with my recent divorce, and no matter what my bestie says, I’m so not ready for anything in the romance department.
Speaking of cats, my little Burmese, Cooper, follows me around like he’s my guard dog. Thankfully, Holiday Hills is animal friendly. Everyone’s got a cat or dog, and that crazy old woman on the back end of town has the funniest talking parrot.
Oh, that crazy old woman, she’s a local celebrity, which can be a lot of trouble for her daughter. How do I know? Because that’s me. I’m the crazy old woman’s daughter.
The good news is everyone loves my mother, including me. The bad news is she recently died, and when she did, she opened up a whole new world for me, one I’d always thought was fictional. The magical world.
Now I have witchy powers, a talking cat, and a knack for finding dead bodies in my quaint little town.
Ones that don’t die on accident.
My name is Abby Odell and I’m a witch.
Who knew? I sure didn’t. Thanks for that, Mom.

Great start to a new series. Loved the characters & setting. I can’t wait to read about Abby coming into her powers and how that changes her life.
What a wonderful new witchy series!
What an enjoyable story! Well-written, fun; wonderful! Abby has only JUST learned that she’s a witch, and she has a hard time wrapping her head around all this witchy business. It’s a lot to take in! And a talking cat! A snarky one at that! I loved the fact that she is an author who writes a witch cozy! Well, ghostwrites, to be exact. But that was funny. I loved the whole book! It was a journey of discovery of her own witchy powers (that she definitely needs to learn to control!) and other magical beings and of course bringing a killer to justice. The ending was complicated, surprising (even a little confusing at first!) and very satisfying. Lovely new series! Some obvious winks to the series Charmed 😉 Recommend!
There’s a New Witch in Town by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson is totally my catnip. I love stories about women just coming into their witchy powers!
There are a bunch of fun characters in this book, my favorite being the talking cat, Cooper. And I really enjoyed the grumpy werewolf, parrot, and completely clueless to the world of magic best friend.
I enjoyed how Aspenson wrote the use of magic in regards to people who don’t have it. I thought it was a fun twist and was useful because Abby and the other magic users wouldn’t have to be afraid of being caught using it.
And the mystery added another fun layer to the story. I’m already looking forward to book two, Witch This Way.
Abby Odell is a new witch in town. She had no clue she was a witch until after her mother passed. She recently bought the most adorable little cottage just off the corner of Main Street in Holiday Hills, the charmingest of charming small southern towns. I spend my days ghostwriting a cozy mystery series for a well-known author, and maybe just a minute or two crushing on the town’s police chief. But of course, I’d never let that cat out of the bag because I am so not his type. Someone is after he new found powers and she needs to found out who. I enjoyed all the characters in this book. It was a fun read.
No time to mourn. The death of a parent rarely ever stops affecting those who lost the one they dearly loved. The emotions are raw and even time doesn’t ease the pain for many. But for the leading character in this story, she rarely gets a chance to even let it sink in that her mother is gone b/c someone wants her dead and they are relentless! Great fast-moving story that has loads of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing at who the baddie is.
Abby’s freaking out. Her mom just passed away, and she’s left a message saying Abby needs to take care. She’s descended from a long line of witches. And danger could be coming her way. Can Abby harness her power and defeat the ones coming after her? Read and see.
Interesting first book in a new series. I’m looking forward to learning more about Abby and all the magical (and non-magical) folks who call Holliday Hills home. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4.
This story starts with the death of Abigail’s mother. Who surprises her by telling Abigail that she is a witch then passes away in the night. After the funeral, Abby goes to the Enchanted bookstore where Bessie was. Bessie acted more like a mother to Abby than her own mother did. When Abby goes to visit her mother she finds a dead woman under her mother’s name. She is an aunt Abby never knew about. Shot dead. Now an uncle she never about is after Abby for her “powers”, not only does Abby write about a witch in books … she IS a witch. She needs a crash course in learning her newfound powers to stay alive! Lots of things that are hard for Abby to understand is going on in this book. But will she be able to survive her uncle? Enjoy this wonderfully delightful story to find out.
Excellent New Cozy Witch Series!
Abby Odell, still grieving from her mother’s death, suddenly finds out she’s a witch and her cat Cooper can talk. A wonderful funny adventure as she learns to control her powers and find out who’s stalking her. Great, quirky characters, plenty of suspense, intrigue, and unique twists with a HEA! Enjoy!
There’s a New Witch in Town (Holiday Hills Witch #1), my eighth highly enjoyable read from author Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. Well-written & enjoyable, I was only familiar with this author from the Lily Sprayberry Realtor mysteries. I was given a copy of Witch This Way (Holiday Hills Witch #2) & hadn’t read this book yet so I went out & bought it to read first. An excellent read, I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Abby just lost her mother, but she suddenly received magic!
Such a great start to this new series! I could not put this book down, it was that good! Abby is the perfect new witch, learning about her powers with the help of Bessie, her mom’s best friend. So many secrets too! Bessie was left with helping Abby discover them, since her mom died before she could. Carolyn, keep these books coming! I’m loving this series!
Another superb story from Carolyn Ridder Aspenson Aspenson combines two of my favorite genres, paranormal and mystery. In this witchy new series, Abby discovers she is a witch, has a talking cat named Cooper, and a murderer hot on her heels. This fast-paced new series has me hooked. Cooper steals the show with his snarky cat attitude. There’s A New Witch in Town is classic Aspenson.
I have been provided with a copy of There’s a New Witch in Town by the author for an impartial review. This is the first book in the brand-new The Holiday Hills Witch Cozy Mystery series and this was just a fantastic way to start off a new series. I was immediately drawn into this world with this amazing storyline and it’s amazing characters. I just had so much fun reading this story and I just couldn’t help but fall in love with all of the characters. I was just so sad to turn the last page. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Abby discovers that she has always been a witch, and just didn’t know it, after her mother dies. She initially rejects the idea as nonsense, but when strange things start to happen around her, she learns the hard truth about her life, and her town.
This is a good start to a new series. A short read, but a lot happens and it holds your interest. The characters are fun to read, and I always love a talking pet – especially a sassy one! I hope there’ll be a book two, I would love to read more.
With the death of her mother, a new self, new skills and powers, and a different world revealed themselves to her.
Big problem? Knowing who and what to trust- and knowing that your truth could put life long friends in danger
There’s a new witch in town- and things are getting real – and really lethal!
There’s a New Witch In Town is a new series by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. I have read a few books by this author and have never been disappointed. I’m delighted that this one continues that trend.
In this one we are introduced to Abby, a young writer who has just lost her beloved mother. Things start happening around her that she puts down to faulty wiring. In reality, she, who writes tales of a witch, is about to make a startling discovery.
I love the characters in this. Abby, love interest Gabe, best friend Stella and Bessie, her mom’s best friend. Mr Charming and Cooper were delightful surprises. I love the relationship Abby has with them.
One of the things I enjoy so much about Ms Aspenson’s writing is that she gives me so much to think about. She blends things and presents ideas and information that I find myself thinking about and remembering long after I close her books. She is also one author that I can count on to write characters that are strong yet still learning things. Her characters have relationships that are sometimes difficult. We get to see how those work out. In this case, not everyone can know about Abby’s newly discovered life. I have a best friend that I would be torn wanting to protect her but wanting to spill everything. I know, for different reasons, how delicate and tricky that is to balance. I’m so interested in how these relationships progress or change. The mystery I’m not going to say one word about because I am not chancing any type of spoiler. Matter of fact, I’m just stopping here and telling you to grab this book and read it now!
this is a great start to a new series. Abby didn’t believe her mother when she said “You’re a witch”. It was probably just a hallucination said as her mother was dying. But then, strange things started happening starting with the lights coming on by themselves when she rubbed her nose. Then, her cat started talking. After an old woman comes to her mother’s funeral, the old woman is found dead. And, there are shapeshifters who are scaring her. Is her wicked uncle trying to steal her powers? Read this fun book and find out.
really liked the character Abigail Odell , cant wait to see her growth as she learns more about her secret life as a witch she was unaware of until her mom passed away. Abigail was just a regular girl, writing stories about witches and shapeshifters, till one day she realizes she was one as well. In this cozy she learns some of her moms secrets and the danger that comes with it.
Great start to what promises to be a delightful new series. When Abby’s mother dies, she learns that she was a witch…and so is Abby. These characters are lively and the book is well written. There are plenty of twists, turns and red herrings. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
new and terrific series! I am impressed by the author’s creativity and her skill in weaving the threads of the story together. This is a fresh, new idea somewhat different from her other books. Can’t wait for the next one!
I really enjoyed this story Abby finds out she’s a witch when her mom dies and there are people who want to kill her and take her powers but she comes into her own and learns about her family and her powers. I can’t wait for the next book. I recommend this
I received a copy from the author for a honest opinion these thoughts are my own
