Jason and Eileen are thrown together to put together a wedding for his cousin (Marek) and her sister (Charlie), they grow closer during this time and the sparks start flying.
I met Jason Spearman when I read his brother Jack’s book, Maybe Later , there was something about him then that let me know he was hurt beyond repair but that was before he met Eileen. Poor Eileen, she really drew the short straw when it came to family. She is the middle child which is constantly neglected and overshadowed by her older sister and she is blamed for everything that goes wrong in the family. I mean seriously how can one person have all the power to cause every bad thing that happens to the family? THEY CAN’T, yet she is the one that gets blamed for it and is told to make things right again and again and again. YIKES! If I was her I would have taken off years ago and cut them all loose.
This is a slow burn romance there is no insta-love here which was nice, yes they found one another attractive but they grew to become friends and then more. If you enjoyed the Romantic Comedies Sixteen Candles and 27 Dresses this story is perfect for you, it has all the fun and charm each of those did as well as two characters you can’t help but root for. Happy Reading!!!
Jason Spearman isn’t a morning person. Plus his communication skills need work. Eileen works in a job that helps people but not everyone gets the same reward. These two people couldn’t be more opposite. It was interesting to watch our author take two people that you really couldn’t see together find a way where a connection starts to build.
I also found it fascinating to see how different men and women think – especially where these two are concerned. Sometimes we give up on family members then something happens and we turn around and are willing to give a helping hand – after all they are still family. Then we have the opposite where some members seem more important than others. But when something happens, they rely on you to pick up the slack in order to get things done. It shows how different families can be. How sad the world would be if we were all the same.
Watching this story develop was a pleasure. Even though this may seem as if there are two stories going on at once, Jason and Eileen will shine through. You will see the craziness and even some frustration but the unexpected can happen. At times, I mentally wanted to slap someone upside the head and say “wake up!” The ending left me looking forward to the next creation our author comes up with. And this is one story that I could see playing out on either the Hallmark Channel or Lifetime.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Surprise! Then He Happened is a fabulous rom-com from Claudia Burgoa, the Queen of ripping my heart out and stomping on it! I am delighted beyond measure to have read this story of Jason and Eileen wrangling their spoiled undeserving family members into a shotgun wedding of their dreams. The set up is a little bit hysterical and a little bit heartbreaking but the way this couple pull of a miracle is completely entertaining. The journey is well worth the read!
I want to be couple friends with Jason and Eileen and go on weekend trips to do weird out of the way fun things. They are fun and unconventional and don’t give a care. She’s got a beautiful heart and he’s a huge romantic, together they make me happy. I want to punch a bunch of their family members.
This book! I loved Jason and Eileen.
Now Jason, the playboy, has been hurt and of course thinks love is not in his future. Bamm..here comes Eileen!
Poor Eileen..completely walked all over by her family. She deserves someone to put her first and Jason is just the man for the job.
These two are thrown together to plan a shotgun wedding..who knew they would end up finding their own happily ever after!
Who is Jason Spearman? What is the big deal about him? What do we see happening for and to him at the beginning of the book? What does Jason do for a living? Who are Josseline, Jack, Alex, and Fitz? Who is or was Greta? Who are Emmeline and Eileen? What do each of these ladies do for a living? Who is Charlie? Okay, I have to say I have a really huge dislike of Eileen’s family right now. Before Chapter 20, I was ready to commit murder in Eileen’s name. By the end of the book, I no longer saw red, but hope. Enjoy the read!
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin’ With M. Brennan.
“Loving Jason, feels like floating on a cloud, falling gently to somewhere safe to land. Somewhere safe that I’ve been searching for my entire life!”
This book gave me all the feels all the goosies and comfort of a fuzzy blanket all wrapped into one. I couldn’t pin point exactly when I fell in love with this couple. Only to say that it gradually pulled and tugged at my heartstrings and gave the word “love” and entire new profound meaning. This couple was each other’s soul and when brought together they bonded together quicker than concrete or superglue. Jason was her Simon and he was her Garfunkel. Two peas and a pod and all that. And even if the whole premise behind them getting to know each other and essentially falling in love, was because of some selfish individuals, all it did was show how big 2 hearts were that were willing to bring happiness to everyone around them. Including themselves without realizing it!!!
10 STARS if possible
Then He Happened by Claudia Burgoa is a contemporary, slow burn, romantic comedy told in dual POV. It follows the relationship between physical therapist, Eileen McBean, and venture capitalist, Jason Spearman. They meet for the first time when they’re thrown together to plan a shot-gun wedding for her pregnant sister, Charlie, and his slacker cousin, Marek. The story takes place over the course of a few weeks.
Eileen and Jason are not only tasked with planning the wedding but also paying for it. And to top it all off, the bride is a screaming, tantrum-throwing, ungrateful, selfish shrew making a tough job even more difficult. Jason and Eileen bond over their shared irritation and quickly form a friendship that develops into more.
I enjoyed this book and thought Eileen and Jason were both very likeable characters. It was also nice to see Jack and Emmeline from Maybe Later and get a little update on them. Overall, the story was a fun, quick read.
*** I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC. ***
Wow, this romance had me laughing out loud, swooning, a little vexed at times, but totally falling in love with Burgoa’s story telling. She had my emotions traveling all over the place, but with a quirky sense of humor and a promise of good things to come! Eileen is a caregiver, wanting to help others. So much so, that in helping others live, she eventually loses herself. Jason has a reputation for being a cold-hearted playboy. After having his heart broken, he vowed to never allow anyone to have that power over him again. Jason and Eileen are thrown together to plan a wedding for their clueless, naive, family members. They try to please them, but nothing works as it should. Even though they are in a frustrating situation, they make the most of it, having a blast together. They were living a life where their dreams were forgotten and no one saw them for who they truly were. But Jason and Eileen get each other, seeing into each other’s soul, and falling hard. They never saw each other coming. But with their shared passion for musicals, their thoughtfulness, their romantic nature, and their explosive chemistry, they were perfect for each other. Some of the secondary characters were frustrating at times but that is what makes this story more authentic I think. It came down to loving and supporting those you care for, but also being true to yourself. I loved this quirky, emotional, sweet and sexy romance!
Then He Happened is the first book by Claudia Burgoa that I have read and I definitely enjoyed this story. It combines great banter and laughable moments and takes us on a sweet journey of friendship that turns into so much more.
Jason and Eileen have the chance to bond when they are thrown together to help plan a shotgun wedding for her bridezilla sister, Charlie and his cousin, Marek. They have so many opportunities to spend together while the booking the band, finding the venue and planning all the other details needed to pull the wedding off. In these moments they find they have a lot in common, really enjoy their time together and have built a friendship that is the beginning of their happily ever after.
I flove Jason!! Covering up his disillusionment with relationships through meaningless one night stands, he loves his family but he’s become cynical. But he ever expects to meet someone like Eileen. She awakens his love. And he saves her from herself. The middle child in a family that always seems to forget her, she is sucked into her oldest sister’s drama, as always, and is expected to fix it all. Jason understands because he too tries to play family fixer, but unlike Eileen’s family, his has their limits. This story is a journey for both of them. Jason discovers his heart again. Eileen discovers her spine. Funny, steamy, tender, full of fantabulous goodness! As well as having Jackson and Amy. So very very good!! I received a review copy. I am leaving an honest review.
If I hadn’t already met the author, I would be concerned her personality might be something like Charlie. Dear God that’s a scary thought! Bridezilla is a term but for Charlie it’s a way of life! I’m legit terrified for any spawn of hers. Between her and her mess of a fiance future generations aren’t looking so stable.
But enough about Charlie because everyone talks about Charlie. Let’s talk about…what’s her name again!?! I’m kidding but I get the distinct impression her family might not remember. Eileen is the middle child but her family makes the stereotype a harsh reality. No attention, unless it’s negative. Eileen is the scapegoat and also required to fix any and all f@ck ups. Eileen is not someone to be envied because this family has way too many mess ups and zero love for the middle child.
It broke my heart and pissed me off at the same time. The family dynamic is brutal. I kept wishing her a better family or amnesia so she forgets how utterly messed up they are to her. Alas, it’s not that kind of story. But Then He Happened…and things changed.
He might not be what she wished for but he is everything that she dreams of. Sweet, sexy, and actually cares is a big change for Eileen. Things might just be looking up…
Brilliantly done!!!! Loved this book!!!! I can’t wait to re-read it again!!!! This will definitely be one that I will re-read over and over!!!!
OMG…did you see the cover of this book. I’ve been in love with it since I first saw it and was so excited to read this story. I’m happy to say I was not disappointed. Then He Happened was an engrossing novel that will grab your attention from start to finish. This is Jason and Eileen’s story and you would have already met Jason if you read Maybe Later, the first book in this standalone series.
Jason and Eileen were two complex characters who ended up being so perfect for each other. The story was told in dual POV and we are given glimpses into the past which gives us a better understanding of these two characters.
Yes this was a slow burn romance but you will enjoy the journey of these two becoming friends and then so much more. I loved their banter and seeing how they dealt with all the issues that kept coming up leading up to the wedding.
This book will evoke a range of emotions from you. There were some characters you will love and some you will dislike. There were scenes that will make you laugh and some that will make you sad.But the HEA ending will make it all worth it.
Then He Happened was a fantastic read. I loved it and would highly recommend it to all lovers of Contemporary romance.
Then He Happened is the second romantic comedy that Ms. Burgoa has written and she knocked it out of the park! It’s an entertaining, flirty and hilarious read with wonderful characters and a unique storyline.
Jason and Eileen met under unusual circumstances. Jason’s cousin (Marek) and Eileen’s sister (Charlie) who are both irresponsible and immature discover they are pregnant and need to get married quickly. Neither one of them have a penny to their name and of course it’s Jason and Eileen’s responsibility to plan and pay for the wedding. As they navigate through the wedding planning and the crazy adventures begin, they form a friendship, grow closer and their undeniable chemistry really heats up.
I fell head over heels in love with Jason and his strong, sexy and geeky down to earth persona. He has a guarded heart since he was jilted at the alter by his ex fiancée. Ms. Burgoa truly brought out the best in Jason and even though he’s wealthy and successful, he’s a genuine man who needs a good woman to cherish him. I was rooting for him throughout the book. And my heart truly went out to Eileen as she had to endure being the middle child of her three siblings. She’s such an amazing, lovable and independent woman who deserves to be adored and recognized for that. She’s also the most responsible, dependable and reliable out of the three children. Unfortunately, her family is neglectful towards her, they take advantage of her kindness and her inability to say no to them. They literally treat her like Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles (yes they forgot her birthday) and Jan Brady from The Brady Bunch. There were several times that I found myself shaking my head and my fists at her family’s antics (especially Charlie aka bridezilla). And I must say the family’s antics were so unbelievable and hysterical at times.
Jason and Eileen are a romantic comedy match made in heaven. These two made my heart smile. I connected with their story, there was never a dull moment in the storyline as it flowed seamlessly and I wanted more and more of them. Then He Happened is a sexy and feel good romance that I highly recommend reading.
Loved this book
The Spearman family is back! Jason Spearman is first seen in Maybe Later. You don’t have to read Maybe Later to enjoy Then He Happened, but I can’t imagine why anyone would want to skip the introduction to the Spearman family. Jason is still nursing a broken heart and questioning why he wasn’t enough when his ne’er-do-well cousin announces the need for a job, a home, and a shotgun wedding. Eileen is a middle child who is either invisible or the family scapegoat, depending on what is going on in her family. Forgotten until there is a crisis and then used and abused when she cleans up everyone’s messes. Her birthday and college graduation is within sight when her sister demands that Eileen throw together a dream wedding, fit for royalty in two weeks.
Bent, but not quite broken – these two souls are thrown together to put together a wedding for their respective family members. As they get to know each other and quickly develop an amazing friendship, the attraction grows until sparks and feelings are flying everywhere. But what happens when the big day comes and goes? Are they friends, friends with benefits, passing ships in the night, or is there something more between Eileen and Jason?
Claudia delivers a beautifully touching story with enough lighthearted moments and absurdity to keep me glued to my kindle and cursing the interruptions of life that kept me from finishing this in one sitting.
I do wish the book had been titled Then They Happened, but that is just me.
This was such a fun book to read!
Eileen’s sister and Jason’s cousin are having a shotgun wedding and Charlie, the bride, chooses Eileen’s birthday and graduation day as the wedding date, then Eileen and Jason get stuck with planning the entire thing for the incompetent couple.
They find they have so much in common, and love spending time together. They talk about anything and everything. I loved how their feelings developed out of mutual respect and enjoyment and not instalust. That was a refreshing change from the typical romance book.
It was also nice getting a little bit of Jack and Emmeline, too, from Maybe Later (Jason is Jack’s brother) but both are true standalones.
Whew!! What a story! This is the second book I have read by this fantastic author and she continues to amaze me!
Then He Happened is Jason and Eileen’s story. If you have read Maybe Later you were introduced to Jason. He is Jack’s brother.
Jason’s past has molded him into the person he is today. He was dealt a crap hand at love in the past and was literally left to deal with the damage and fall out by himself.
Eileen, oh this girl! I could so empathize with her plight. She is the poster child of the “Middle child syndrome” and learned to deal with it the best way she could and it too molded her into the person she has become. Too self sacrificing for her own good.
I loved how Jason and Eileen are brought together and I applauded how Jason wanted to become her protector and made Eileen see her worth and teach her to love herself more, to demand more and be a little selfish!
The chemistry between Jason and Eileen was epic and I loved how their quirkiness brought them together.
I also enjoyed the glimpses of past characters, it was nice to read what they were up too! Now I am hoping for more stories from the Spearman family! Well done Ms. Burgoa!
I am in love. That is my simple and final reaction to Then He Happened by Claudia Burgoa. She literally ripped my heart out and healed it in the same stroke. The story was heartbreakingly beautiful.
Jason is a gorgeous, sexy man with a wicked sense of humor. He has golden heart that broke years back and the cracks are still here. He no longer believes in love and marriage. Enter Eileen. The sassy, adorable, whimsical, cheerful, infuriating, compassionate woman is breaking his walls. But she has own burden, vulnerabilities and issues. Can they find true happiness?
Claudia Burgoa can balance sassy witty banter with deep intense emotions like a pro and I love that about her writing. Her story telling is effortless, fluent and mesmerizing. I didn’t even realize how the time passed while I was reading it. The crazy insane attraction grew painfully slowly and I savoured every moment. The author created a whole lot of secondary characters who added to the layers and complexities. My heart was aching for Jason and Eileen. They had to go through so much in their individual lives and they supported each other to come over everything. It was true love that made them better, stronger and closer.
If you want to read a true romance that will put smile on your face and tears in your eyes, I strongle recommend Then He Happened by Claudia Burgoa. I am still not ready to let the couple go.
Received ARC for Honest Review
The past controls his future. His broken heart from then doesn’t leave him open to finding love again.
Shes always been in the background. Promises forgotten, her dreams shattered and broken. Her heart is fragile.
Two middle children come together to save the day, and bond over common interests as their clueless relatives get ready to say “I do”.
This is a slow burner, that for me is the kind of read I would enjoy on a relaxing Sunday afternoon.
The characters Eileen and Jason are broken in their own ways, but together they bring out the best in each other.
Shes kind and considerate, smart and funny. Hes loyal to a fault, loving and caring.
Combine all these qualities and it makes for one fantastic relationship!
This is essentially a heart warming swoonworthy read, that I’m sure you will enjoy as much as I did.
A solid four stars from me.
