I cannot stand Charlie or the parents how Eileen let them walk all over her for so long I have no clue it was a constant irritation through this whole book luckily he happened and turned this whole thing around for me it’s one of those books where it’s not horrible and it’s well-written but the characters are so well done that you almost can’t see past their flaws I know that all sounds negative but it’s actually compliment to the author and her ability to connect with her readers hope we see more from the Spearman family definitely not from Eileen’s
Claudia Burgoa is an amazing writer who engages you from the first word. She created a character, Jason Spearman, and carried him into his own story. She creates characters that overcome their past and rise up against whatever is against them. She creates these masterpieces of writing that come to life from the page. Always one click this author!!
Jason spearman is the picture of a man mending a broken heart. He isn’t looking for love and attends a wedding. Eileen is a girl who is always in the background. The drama, angst, and humor really kept me actively and emotionally involved with these characters. With the flashbacks from the 80s being a huge perk, it was an all around amazing and fun ready by Claudia Burgoa.
Oh my heart reading this. The emotional pull between these two unsuspecting characters. And how I wanted to slap Charlie
Then He Happened is a standalone story, however, it follows the brother of a character we get to meet in the book Maybe Later. In Maybe Later we get Jackson and Emmaline’s story and we get introduced to Jason. In Then He Happened, we get Jason’s story but Jackson and Emmaline are mentioned multiple times. Because of this I was happy that I had already read Maybe Later because it helped me enjoy the story that much more since I had a connection with the characters.
I absolutely LOVED this book! My heart broke for how Eileen was treated by her family. As the middle child she was always second to her sister and often forgotten about. When her big sister is suddenly getting married it falls on Eileen to plan the wedding of the century.
Jason is a womanizing billionaire. With no desire to get into a relationship, Jason prides himself on the love em and leave em attitude that has worked for him up until now. Suddenly, when his cousin needs his help planning a sudden wedding Jason is thrown together with the sister of the bride to make things happen. The two end up finding out that they actually both have a lot in common. Too bad neither one is looking for anything serious.
This book was filled with hilarious banter between Eileen and Jason as well as drama, laughter and a little heartbreak. I hated Eileen’s family for how they were treating her and waited for the day she wouldn’t let them walk all over her any longer.
I can’t wait to read more from this author! By Alisa
This book was so unexpected! I loved it more than I thought I would. I was rooting for Jason and Eileen to have a spark the whole time!
I love Mrs. Burgoa’s writing and how all her characters from different books pop up in other stories. This story is funny, heartwarming and crazy. Eileen is going to be turning 30 and is getting her master’s degree while working as a therapist and being the one that seems to have to always do things for her family. She is the middle child and even her younger brother gets ignored by the family because their parents are always trying to help their oldest sister out of whatever situation or trouble she gets herself into…pretty much they focus on their oldest child and blames the middle child (Eileen) for whatever goes wrong and expects her to fix things and just ignores their youngest child.
Jason Spearman doesn’t believe in marriage anymore but he loves his family and would do anything for them. Which is how he ends up helping his cousin, Marek, try to find a job, a place to live, and help pay for Marek’s wedding because his cousin got the girlfriend pregnant!
So this is how Eileen and Jason ended up meeting – she was somehow “assigned” to help plan her sister’s wedding and Jason got roped into not only pay for the wedding but to plan it too. The things these 2 get into while planning the wedding is funny and they interacted like they knew each other for a long time. They understand each other since they are both middle children and have gone through similar situations. When Charlie, Eileen’s sister, expects to have an extravagant wedding, honeymoon, and a nice place to live, Jason puts his foot down. Plus he’s buying the wedding dress!
At least Eileen and Jason starts to build a relationship while putting together a wedding for a couple of ungrateful and spoiled individuals. I enjoyed how well Eileen and Jason understand each other therefore is able to support each other through all the stress put upon them. Jason “teaches” Eileen that she doesn’t have to make everyone happy, especially when it is costing her what she wants. Eileen shows Jason that being in a relationship is not bad at all when it is someone that you care about and understands you.
I enjoyed this book since there are so many laugh out loud moments throughout the whole book. Plus Jason and Eileen are 2 great characters that deserved any happiness that they can find!
Then He happened is such a great story. From the moment you read the first couple of sentences you are hooked. In this book we read the story of playboy Jason and do gooder Eileen. They could be anymore opposites but you know what they say opposites attract. Eileen the ever “fixer” in her family is sick and tired of being the person everyone looks for to clean up messes. Jason the typical playboy that longs to be in a committed relationship but too scared to try. Thrown them in to plan a shotgun wedding and we see sparks fly. I definitely give this book a 5!starvrating and highly recommend it. Great job to this author. Another hit!!!
Received in exchange for a honest review.
What happens when two middle children are thrown together to plan a wedding for a diva and a sloth- we get a slow burning romance where our two main characters grow and fall in love.
Jason started the story as not my favorite character. We see flashbacks of what has cause him to become a mantrollop. The dude is not picky at all. He is proud of it too. His issue: fear of love for feels he doesn’t deserve it but also doesn’t want to be hurt. His past messed him up and it is still weighing on him..What helps to redeem him? We see that he is a closet geek…a genuinely good guy behind the facade and how he helps Eileen find her spine and voice was great. Seeing him find friendship, companionship and love with Eileen as they plan the wedding was great…He finally fell and it was hard for him at first but he did accept and embrace it in the end…As he grew and you learned who he was I like him more and more.
Eileen is the middle child who is a doormat when the book began. She was a people pleaser and it seems this stems from guilt and her parents. Parents that really are just horrid. A sister who takes bridezilla to a new level and is just wretched.. For Eileen she doesn’t say no to her family. Even when it costs her something she wants…So when her sister needs a wedding planned and it angers her she plans it…with the help of Jason..Eileen isn’t a bad person quite the opposite she is just lost in expectations, guilt and has no self confidence or worth. It is Jason who helps her build up her confidence and belief in herself as they plan a wedding that has her change.
As they plan this wedding, they realize how wonderful the other is and do not hesitate to help the other see this. The attraction is there but they are both feeling unworthy of letting someone in. The past has beaten them down. It is through patience, respect, support and kindness from each other that they slowly let go of the past, grow and let themselves feel. Let themselves love one another and realize they deserve each other and love.
The story had fun moments, moments where you want to pull your hair out in frustration with Eileen and her situation with her sister and parents, yell at Jason to open his eyes and see what is in front of him and also smile at those tender moments where they are real with one another and let their defenses down to show each other who they are..The story is about family, love, growth and finding your voice. About letting go and letting someone in. As Jason and Eileen plan this wedding and fall in love you smile at how they grow and fall in love. How they support one another and help each oter find their way and fall in love with one another.
Eileen and Jason were perfect for each other!! I completely disliked her family and the way they treated her. Jason made sure she was the most important person even though they met in the most unconventional way. Eileen was the problem solver for her family even if it came at a price of her happiness and it’s heartbreaking to see how she’s treated. Jason liked her from the minute he met her and they clicked and realized how much they have in common. This wasn’t an instalove and I enjoyed every minute of their love blossoming. I loved their banter and their seriousness too. They just balanced each other out in a way that made my heart smile.
Perfect romantic comedy – bittersweet, heartening and soul-stirring
The story captured my attention from the beginning. Mostly because I personally know people who were treated by their family in a way Eileen, the heroine, was. Those people were struggling to say ‘NO’. It’s hard when you dearly love your relatives and they know you have a soft spot for them in your heart. Many times they will use this against you and to take advantage of you.
It’s not like everyone in real life is super self confident and can be assertive enough to push back when needed. I was happy heroine finally found the strength to say what she thought.
Jason, the hero, has put himself in similar situation when it comes to his cousin Marek. But also his troubles are going way back to his first relationship. Main issue described by the author here is lack of communication between people. People who are afraid to hurt someone else’s feelings because they care about them and choose to run away rather than to face facts and discuss things or turn the blind eye on the way they are being treated.
What I liked very much was that the plot introduced romance where people spend time together, had time to know each other in many situations, talk about their worst experiences and build connection. Not the usual 20-30% mark when the hero and heroine needs to “jump their bones” and start relationship build on nothing. That felt closer to the reality even if what we read is pure fiction. I’m really grateful for that because I could experience something else than very popular currently instant love/lust trope. Heroine’s predicament gave me different perspective to look at family ties and brought some afterthoughts of this subject.
There were funny moments and heartbreaking confessions. Situations that brought tears to my eyes, made me smile and at the end made my heart swell with love and happiness for main characters. Perfect romantic comedy. Loved it from the very start to the last page.
Do I need to mention that I read it in one sitting? Simply couldn’t put it down. Now, I need more from this family! I hope that author will show glimpses of how the life is going for the two couples already introduced in this book and previous one titled “Maybe Later”. I’d like to see them in the next stories about Spearman family.
Really enjoyed Jason and Eileens story so much, I could not put down. Hes the best man of her sisters wedding. They are drawn to each other and even though he doesnt do commitments hes very intrigued by her. Just really loved this book and these characters.
I love Claudia with all my heart, but this story really had me hurting. First off, Claudia has a way with words and she can make you either hate or love her characters. If you got a reaction, then she did her job as a writer. Eileen’s family is the worst. They take advantage of her and Eileen allows it to happen. Her sister is placed on an altar compared to Eileen as she is left unseen. The TOTAL A**HOLE FAMILY.
Jason hasn’t had it good either. When you give your heart to someone and they throw it out like garbage well you will have some pretty deep cuts in the soul. Jason had that done to him by who he thought was his forever. It left him damaged and he continued life how he thought he should. The opposite of being loyal and committed to someone? Yes, a manwhore but act like a manwhore can find love again!
The best part of a wedding… getting to meet new people especially if you are involved in the planning. The connection between Jason and Eileen grew overtime: Strangers to Hey you understand my pain to Sparks. They fit the others’ cons and together they grew not only as a couple but as a person in general. However, let’s be honest if this was my story I would have flipped the bird and left the wedding to burn. (CHARLIE, you suck)
Jason Spearman was first introduced in Maybe Later as playboy. He had a rough past relationship which ended in heart ache. He was not looking for anything serious, or so he thought. Enter Eileen, a woman dealing with a family who has failed her. Jason and Eileen are thrown together to plan a wedding for two people who don’t even appreciate the hard work. Throughout the mess of planning a shotgun wedding, Jason and Eileen help each other realize what love can be. They had wonderful chemistry. This story ends on a happy note. My only dislike was Eileen’s horrible family, especially sister and mom. I had so much anger towards them I found myself putting down the book to remind myself that it is just a book. Wonderful story.
Then He Happened is a great rom com with just the right amount of angst. Ms. Burgoa does an excellent job of writing likeable characters. I really enjoyed the witty banter between Jason and Eileen.
I need to say that I just loved Eileen and Jason, the characters are fantastic!
Eileen was never the first choice of her parents, always having to settle for the “leftovers” of her older sister, Charlie, and fix the wrong things she does, in this case, the last-minute marriage.
While Eileen and Jason, the groom’s cousin, work nonstop to organize the wedding in just three weeks, the attraction between them grows, once they realize that they have a lot of things in common and identify with each other.
The relationship’s development between Eileen and Jason is beautiful, at the same time that he motivates her to think more on herself and not worry so much about her family.
I loved the story, the characters and the ending, it was perfect for them.
I highly recommend the reading.
Oh my sweet stars! What is it about the the Spearmans men that have me over the moon. There is something maddening about them that makes them so imperfectly perfect. If I thought Jack was my favourite one, I was quite wrong because his brother, Jason won my heart from the first page. Jackson is the epitome of a billionaire CEO and Jason is the epitome of a “reformed” cynical rich playboy.
Then He Happened is a magnificent book that made me feel so much. It is a wonderful and heartwarming tale where two souls from different worlds felt like life is against them and they found themselves in a horrible situation and are forced to face it even if they didn’t want because their good beautiful hearts.
It didn’t take me long to become addicted and quite obsessed to this heartfelt book. Jason and Eileen’s story is as stunning as it is unexpected. It is so special. Deep, devastatingly beautiful and brutally perfect. Then He Happened is a journey of complex love and friendship.
I have read many books written by this author, most have been very exciting, funny and with a plot totally captivating, but unfortunately this is not the case, without disclosing specific details of the book I can say that it was noted that the author had many problems at the time of writing this story, the plot was vague, and the subject really is not justified, no matter how much love there is between a family, this was not the case, no one is willing to lett their big day be planned by another even if they know eachother very well.
I must admit that both Eileen and Jason are endearing characters, the whole environment of Eileen’s family is appalling. The mistreatment towards her is tremendous, nobody in his sane judgment even if they love their parents and sister is allowed to submit to such madness.
It is interesting the interactions between Jason and Eileen, they are funny and are what the author usually write, so I was surprised by the lack of polish in the rest of the story.
I wanted so much to give this book a better review but I can’t.
Then He Happened is a beautifully written book that combines two souls who have been hurt, stepping up to fix their family who needs them. Jason Spearman is the type of man we could all use in our lives. He’s successful, kind, responsible, but is still hurting from the woman who broke his heart. Eileen is the transparent middle child who is taken for granted by her family and doesn’t have the backbone to stand up to them yet. Jason and Eileen are thrown together in a most unfortunate set of circumstances and are responsible to make things work out for everybody. His cousin and her sister find out that they are going to have a baby, but they don’t have enough money nor wherewithal to plan their own wedding. It’s up to Jason and Eileen to afford it, arrange it and see it through. All is not lost, however, because it gives them a chance to get to know each other well and to form a very close and supportive friendship. Their growth together is a pleasure to watch and the way that they come into their own is a real success story! Claudia Burgoa has a gift of creating characters with grit and empathy as well as a storyline packed full of caring, angst, understanding and love!
A quickie wedding bring these two characters together in Then He Happened. Jason and Eileen are definitely some kind of couple. I adored the fact that this was a slow-burn, get-to-know you romance. We had to get through a lot of their story before anything happened. These two characters both had their issues and went through a lot, so they needed time to discover and get to know each other. But they both had their cute sides too and it was fun to watch them grow together as a couple.
I love Ms Burgoa’s writing style and how so many of her stories are interconnected. In this book, we have Jason who is the brother to Jack from Maybe Later. We also get a name drop of one of my favorite lawyers from one of her other series.
Jason and Eileen’s story was a story about finding love when you least expect it. Jason had been burned badly in the past and didn’t think he’d ever fall for another woman. Eileen lives in her sister’s shadow and doesn’t have time for love. When these two are thrown together to plan a wedding for Jason’s cousin and Eileen’s sister, they never expected to find the person who completely gets them.
These two had witty banter and a fun way about them. I loved watching them explore their relationship and taking things to the next level. Eileen’s family was a little much for me and at times I wanted to slap them all. The song “Come On Eileen” played through my head all the way through the book so I laughed when it was referenced. It was a good read.
