This book grabbed me by the heartstrings and didn’t let go until the very end. The characters are lively and human and broken and wonderful. You must read this book!
4* Quirky Stars
When it happened is a slow friends to lovers romance. Jason and Eileen meet when they are brought together planning and funding the wedding of Jason’s cousin Marek and Eileen’s spoilt horrid sister Charlie. Jason and Eileen were both so kind and understanding towards the bridal couple as well as Eileen’s parents despite the cruel and selfish way they treated her. I struggled to find any good in Charlie and her parents.
I did love the flirty and fun banter between Jason and Eileen and enjoyed reading how they broke down each other’s walls to find love when they least expected it.
It was wonderful to also catch up with Jackson from, Maybe Later, Jason’s brother and get a glimpse into his married life.
I love the stories that Claudia writes as they are real and heartfelt and her covers are so inviting
Jason had his heart broken years ago, and he won’t let it happen again. He’s rich, attractive, and not happy. When his cousin Marek’s girlfriend gets pregnant, Marek needs financial help to get a job and arrange a shotgun wedding.
Eileen has never been a priority in her parent’s life. No, that place has been Charlie, the troubled older sister. May 27 is going to be Eileen’s 27th birthday and her graduation ceremony for getting her doctorate in physical therapy. So of course, Charlie chooses that date to get married and no one seems to remember what that date means to Eileen.
Somehow it falls to Jason, the best man, and Eileen, the made of honor, to make all the wedding arrangements. All the time spent together allows them to become friends and really get to know each other, and appreciate each other in a way that dating never would have.
I loved the banter between Jason and Eileen, the way they had the same sense of humor, liked the same music, and the way he let Eileen know how special she was when her family never would.
I received an ARC and this is my review.
Eileen and Jason are brought together to plan and fund a wedding for Eileen’s spoiled and selfish older sister Charlie and Jason’s slack cousin Marek. Eileen and Jason have both have had some rough bumps in this road called life; Jason deserted by who he thought was his soul mate, and Eileen always forgotten and stepped over by her family in favor of her older sister. The stories of both of their pasts made me so sad and tear up. Yet they always kept their chin up and kept going. Eileen was constantly doing for her family and sacrificing herself.
Jason and Eileen’s bonding over this wedding was a hoot, with all Bridezilla’s demands and meltdowns, there was never a dull moment! Being the only sane people in a sea of insanity brings you closer together as shared allies. You could actually feel the progression to friends and then more. And the more was so hot!!! It was so much fun to see Jack, Jason’s brother, and Emmaline, from Maybe Later here! To see them carrying on with their lives. I love that.
This is another great book by Claudia that will grab you from the first chapter and you will not be able to put down until you’ve turned the last page.
If you read Claudia’s Maybe Later with Jackson Spearman, the reclusive billionaire, then you’ve already met his brother Jason, our H in this new book. Then too, how could you resist this hot cover! You don’t HAVE to read Jackson’s story 1st as this can be a standalone but it’s more fun to, I think.
Jason lives his life as a ‘one and done’ wealthy playboy ever since that fateful day 10 years ago when he swore… never again. That day is what his worst fears are made of. The only woman he wants to count on is his very efficient PA, Jossie. He gave up his passion and dreams and just lives to make more money now. Women just complicate everything.
Eileen has been living in her older sister’s shadow for as long as she can remember, birthdays forgotten, blame for everything wrong in the world, it seems, falling on her shoulders whether or not it belongs there. Her parents really only have eyes for their precious but enabled 1st born. I felt like crying for Eileen’s pain and feeling mostly unloved, wanting to bop her family over the head for how neglectful they are and have always been…its just so damn wrong.
So, when Eileen’s cluelessly spoiled sister and Jason’s starving artist cousin need to tie the knot quick, who might be footing the bill and planning this crazy last minute wedding but these two. Let the adventures begin, in more ways than one, it seems.
Jason and Eileen make a pretty amazing team, lifting each other up as they make magic happen for their families. Can they take some of that sparkle for themselves or will one or both of them let their past sabotage what could be something new and special? Read and see some of that Spearman sexiness for yourself. There are a few more of them, will they get a story of their own?
An early copy was provided and happily received. This is my honest review of it.
Eileen and Jason are sucked into planning a wedding for her ungrateful sister and his clueless cousin. By the end of the first chapter, I knew this was a book I would read multiple times. Jason’s thought process was unbelievably funny at times and I loved the banter between Jason and Eileen. And the sweet moments – the song Jason requests that they dance to, the vows they write for the wedding couple. I so much wanted them to see what was right in front of them, but they both had some baggage from the past to deal with. When Eileen finally stood up for herself. I almost stood up and cheered. They do finally realize what we figured out much earlier – they are perfect for each other. Highly recommend !
Eileen had a bad self image because of how her family treated her. She was so patient but caved a lot to keep the peace. I loved it when she would put her foot down and her family took notice. Jason was not one for commitment, and he could not explain his feelings when it came to Eileen. He wanted more for her and was proud of her when she stood up to her family. The journey had its ups and downs, and a rewarding ending. I enjoyed this story and the narration by Jason Clarke and Emma Wilder. Jason and Emma did a great job in voicing these characters and all those around them.
I was given a copy of this audiobook, and this is my unsolicited review.
Jason and Eileen are a match made in heaven in this second Spearman Family installment!
Jason and Eileen are both used to having to solve all of their respective families’ problems, so when Eileen’s sister and Jason’s cousin need to pull off a wedding lickety split, it’s no surprise that they are the ones that have to pull it off. But what is a surprise is how the two of them instantly click, and they for a powerful duo that can pull off the seemingly impossible.
I was so entranced by how Jason just instantly recognized the goodness in Eileen, and how she needed a champion not to fix things for her, but to stand by her side as she fixed things for herself. Jason was exactly what you would want a support to be. And they were amazing together.
The narration by Jason Clarke and Emma Wilder, was simply perfection. They are both two powerhouse narrators in the romance genre, and for good reason. They definitely give their all to their performances, and they draw the listener in and provide hours of enjoyment.
Highly recommend, and looking forward to more Spearman family antics!
5 Star Review of Then He Happened by Claudia Y Burgoa
AUDIO REVIEW:
Then He Happened was well written and had me engaged from the first chapter. I really loved Jason and Eileen, both separately and together, they really do make a great couple. Jason Clarke and Emma Wilder did a great job with their narration. Their voices are so easy to listen to that I found myself listening to this one in one go.
Eileen’s family are not nice, in fact if I were her I would disown them and write them off. The banter and humour between Eileen and Jason was at times hilarious and I found myself smiling often, it just made me happy and as their friendship developed all I could do was cheer them on.
Despite their families, who really are clueless, Jason and Eileen come together to arrange a successful wedding. The support that they show for one another truly was heart warming. There were times throughout the story that I really wanted to smack some sense into Eileen’s sister, her parents and Jason’s cousin. I really felt like cheering when Eileen finally stood up for herself against her selfish family. Through it all Jason offered his friendship, support and eventually love and he just ticked the boxes for me. Jason Clarke did a wonderful job with his voicing of this character, he really brought Jason to life for me.
This book is a little gem, so why not one click?
I truly enjoyed this one and I’m going to go against the consensus and happily give it 4-stars. I’m not sure if it’s because the book I read prior to this one was not good, or what. In any case, this one was a breath of fresh air for me!
Jason is a cynical, arrogant playboy with way more money and privilege than he knows what to do with. He has good reason for being so cynical. But deep down he’s still the typical middle child whose mission in life is to fix things. He has a soft heart, amazing loyalty, and a killer sense of humor. He’s got a lot more going for him, too, but I won’t get into that. Eileen is also the middle child. She is also the family fixer. She has a wicked sense of humor, is loyal to a fault, and has more heart than she should, considering her size. The difference is that Jason has always known unconditional love and support from his entire huge family. Eileen? Not so much. In fact, she is usually blamed for everything that goes wrong and therefore has to fix it. She is constantly playing second fiddle to her older sister who does everything she can to upstage Eileen and to make Eileen’s life miserable.
Jason and Eileen are thrown together when his cousin and her sister end up having to plan a shotgun wedding. Well, actually, Jason and Eileen have to do all the planning. It’s just too taxing for Charlie to do it. You’ll have to read the book to find out the horrible and hilarious things that go on during the planning stage. This was a book that caught me by surprise. It’s been on my “Next Read” Nook shelf for a while. I finished a book in the middle of the night but wasn’t tired enough to go to sleep. I needed another book to start and landed on Then He Happened. I’m glad that happened!!!
Then He Happened is the second book in The Spearman Family series by Claudia Burgoa. I do believe I have a brand new favorite book by Claudia. I loved every single thing about this book. It was the perfect mix of humor, steam, and sweet. These two were just so perfectly adorable together.
We first met Jason Spearman in Maybe Later, he is Jack Spearman’s brother. We got to know him as the wild, playboy. But I knew even then that there was so much more to him. In this book, we get to know his back story and I fell head over heels in love with him. Jason’s cousin, Marek, has always been a bit of a basket case. And Jason always comes to his rescue. He needs help again, only this time, he’s gotten his girlfriend pregnant. And now they want a wedding. So of course, Jason comes to his rescue.
Eileen McBean is twenty six years old and has spent her life trying to fix everything. Her family is dysfunctional at best. Everything that goes wrong is somehow Eileen’s fault. Now Eileen’s sister, Charlie, is pregnant and wants a quick wedding and all eyes are on Eileen to pull it off.
Eileen and Jason come together as a team to pull off Charlie and Marek’s dream wedding. Along the way, they begin to share their secrets, they become friends, and they begin to fall for each other. Jason finds that his new most important thing is to make sure that Eileen feels valued. That she knows how beautiful, smart, funny and wonderful she is. Jason doesn’t believe in love and Eileen just plain doesn’t have time for it. But when you find the missing piece of yourself, the part that makes you feel more whole than you have ever felt, everything in your life changes.
This book! These two!! They talked so much, they laughed so much. They just got each other. They were perfect together. And when they finally did come together, I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so much emotion in a love scene. Or maybe it was me because I loved them so much?! Either way, it was a beautiful thing.
The next book in this series is Once Upon A Holiday and is June Spearman’s book. I admit I’ve already read it and loved it. This really is such a fantastic series. The books can definitely be read as a stand alone but if you read them in order, you would have a better connection to all of the characters.
Interesting story-line in that when you least expect it…love can happen.
I loved Claudia Burgoa’s “Then He Happened,” a funny, sweet, and heartwarming story featuring likeable, sympathetic characters and a well-crafted slow burn romance between main characters Eileen and Jason. Forced into planning a shotgun wedding for Eileen’s sister Charlie and Jason’s cousin Marek, they quickly became friends while fighting a deeper attraction. I loved the way Jason and Eileen bantered with each other and how sweet and goofy Jason was with Eileen. After being left at the altar by his fiancee years earlier, playboy Jason was determined not to fall in love again, but there was something special about Eileen that he just couldn’t resist.
As for Eileen, I couldn’t help but feel bad for her because of the way her parents seemed to constantly overlook her in favor of her older sister, Charlie. She deserved so much better from them as well as from Charlie, whose expectations and demands in the course of planning her wedding often left me flabbergasted. Charlie badly needed a reality check, and when Eileen finally stood up to her and called her out on her behavior, I wanted to cheer!
There were several wonderful secondary characters featured in this story in addition to main characters Eileen and Jason, most notably Jason’s brother Jack and his girlfriend Emmeline as well as Jason’s assistant Jossie. Jack and Emmeline’s story was told in Burgoa’s earlier book “Maybe Later,” but I’d love to read more about Jossie in a future story too.
Overall, “Then He Happened” was a fast-paced and charming read, and I highly recommend it for all fans of contemporary romance and romantic comedy. I look forward to more from Claudia Burgoa soon.
*Review copy provided by the author via Xpresso Book Tours. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a romantic comedy but it’s also so much more. It’s a a story of growth and learning to put yourself first and that you are more than how others treat you. Both Jason and Eileen go throughs such growth together, that it was hard to be upset at his playboy ways before they met. He learns he can have a relationship and she learns she is more than enough. It’s sweet and funny, and sexy.
I listened to the audio now and I loved the narrators and how they brought these characters and the family to life. I had to keep listening because once I started, I couldn’t stop.
5 Cranky Stars
I really enjoyed this book, it’s full of hurt, pain, humor, laughter, and tears. Eileen is the middle child and her family, her older sister is spoiled and Eileen has had to take care of her or clean up after her mistakes all her life. Jason is also a middle child and it starts with his tragic story of being left at the altar by the love of his life. When Eileen’s older sister gets pregnant by Jason’s cousin, the two of them come together and meet to plan a shotgun wedding for them. Eileen and Jason start to feel something towards the other, and through humor and understanding a spark of romance begins. Jason is extremely funny, and romantic, but hides it under the facade of being a Playboy. This book is hands down an amazing books, I couldn’t put it down.
Another great book by Claudia Burgoa. Fell in love with the Spearman boys when I read Maybe Later. Had to read Alex’s story in Almost Perfect.
“It’s one soul calling out to another through an infinite abyss. It’s something like love.”
Aww this book was just so special.
Oh Eileen, she kept getting her heart broken over and over again. She didn’t get it broken by men. No she kept getting it broken by those who should make everything better: Her family. These people were all time jerks. Jerks who expected Eileen to fix everything. She was always put on the back burner, pushed away into the shadow of her sister Charlie. The sister who messed everything up but was never expected to buck up and deal with her mess.
Jason has been hurt so badly by the one he planned to spend the rest of his life with. He was ready for it all, the I do’s, the wedding, the happily ever after. But after being jilted he has become the ultimate cynic. There will be no settling down in his life. He’ll take his random hook ups and be happy with the life he has been living. Commitment is a big No in Jason’s plans.
Suddenly these two are thrust together to plan a shotgun wedding for Eileen’s Bridezilla sister Charlie and Jason’s cousin Marek. They dive into planning what Charlie has demanded; a perfect wedding. Through all the mayhem thrown at them by the bride and groom as well as Eileen’s family they discover they have a lot in common and maybe the way they met was a blessing in disguise because they quickly become fast friends. But could there be something lying beneath the surface that is leading them both past the friendship line and into a territory that neither feels can happen for them. But when lines blur sometimes things become a whole lot clearer.
Loved getting Jason’s story and seeing snippets from Jack and Emmeline and of course meeting Eileen. She was one awesome heroine when she finally said enough is enough by the end of the book.

Jason Spearman spends his life being a rich playboy ever since his ex left him. When is cousin gets a woman knocked up and wants a wedding, Jason and his brother, Jack agree to throw it for him. After Jason meets the bride-to-be he’s not too sure about this wedding until he meets the maid-of-honor, Eileen McBean, sister of the bride and he is intrigued.
Eileen’s entire life has been spent being invisible by her family unless there is a problem, then they expect her to fix it…..which is why she has to plan her sister’s wedding. Eileen knows it will suck planning this wedding, but after she meets Jason she is having second thoughts. The two of them are enjoying laughing and being sarcastic about everything related to the wedding. As the two of them spend more time together Eileen is starting to see past Jason’s playboy ways and is starting to be interested in him as more than just a wedding planner helper.
As things heat up between Jason and Eileen, the two of them finish planning the wedding and then decide hell with it, they are going to forget about everyone else except for themselves!
I loved this story. Eileen and Jason were so fun and sexy together. I loved all the 80’s music, especially the reference to Come on Eileen! LOL I had such fun reading this book and I highly recommend it!
What a different take on finding love. These two meet when her sister is going to marry his cousin..they both become the wedding planners for these two very selfish people, finding there way to the love of their life. He helps her learn that it’s ok to stand up to a family that has always belittled her and she helps him learn that thru love is awesome.
A very sweet romance. Jason has been crushed by love in the past, so no longer believes in it. Eileen has been taken for granted by her family her entire life. When the two are thrown together in sparks fly
