Dollycas’s Thoughts
Libby Klein has penned another terrific mystery filled with laugh-out-loud humor that makes this book impossible to put down.
“Aunt Ginny was somewhere in her eighties, but somehow the feisty redhead got into more trouble than a five-year-old on a sugar binge.”
Yes, Poppy has her hands full again this time. The Senior Center is doing its version of Mamma Mia and all of “the biddies” including Aunt Ginny are involved. The director has persuaded Ginny’s high school flame, now a retired Broadway actor, to play a leading role. Why a successful man would lower himself to a local musical is unknown but everyone is excited to take part or see the show.
Opening night has been set for Friday, February 13 and it does seem the production is truly cursed. Props have gone missing, scenery panels have been vandalized and a death threat has been issued. The director tries to keep the play on course but when a cast member dies suspiciously – did he fall or was he pushed from the catwalk? the players get justifiably nervous. With a “the show must go on” attitude Poppy, Ginny and their friends push ahead while at the same time trying to reel in the killer before another murder brings down the house.
I fell hard for Poppy and Ginny reading the first book in this series, Class Reunions Are Murder, and every subsequent book just cements my feelings. Poppy is getting stronger and stronger. She is trying to get the B & B up and running amidst someone fraudulently posting bad reviews, doing some gluten-free baking on the side to bring in some cash, dealing with feelings for two men, (my mind is already made up) all while trying to keep Ginny and “the biddies” out of trouble and trying to do the job she was roped into for the play. The last thing she needed was a dead body! But she takes it all on.
The supporting cast is also stellar. All Aunt Ginny’s friends, Tim and Gia, Amber and even one very pretty Persian named Figaro. They are all very fleshed out and realistic. Their dialogues are true and sometimes pretty funny. The personalities of the new characters introduced in this story evolve as the drama unfolds. Blanche aka Moira also grew up in Cape May and she has a history with Ginny. I loved the passive way Ginny stuck it to Moira on a daily basis. There are two very quirky/creepy characters too. While not my faves, they sure did add to the story.
The murder mystery was very well plotted and all the subplots flowed well within it. The victim was someone beloved by many and his death was hard to take, His death was misunderstood at first which was a little maddening for everyone involved. As the story unfolds the suspect list expands and the motive gets murky. Several red herrings really twist things up. Having more than one mystery to solve is always fun. I loved all the secrets uncovered and the big reveals.
The Mamma Mia theme was a delight. The Abba music was playing in my head at every rehearsal. Senior citizens playing the parts was a hoot!!
Ooh, you can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen…
We are also treated to seven of Poppy’s recipes at the end of the book!
Theater Nights are Murder is a Perfect Escape. I have loved this entire series! Be prepared to have your funny bone seriously tickled and enjoy. I sure did!
Today I am reviewing “Theater Nights Are Murder” the 4th instalment in the “Poppy McAllister Mystery” series by Libby Klein. I know I am in for a treat when I pick up a book by Libby Klein her humor always keeps me snickering throughout the entire story especially when the biddies get up to all sorts of antics.

The characters are quirky, well rounded and seem real as I could relate to each of them. I love Poppy’s relationship with her Aunt Ginny, and the “Biddies” but lol I would not want to be the one to keep them from getting into mischief! Plus we cant forget about her mischievous cat, Figuro!
I found the mystery was well written and paced with lots of twists and turns. It kept me guessing to the end. I look forward to the next installment and finding out which man, Tim or Gia, Poppy will finally give her heart too.
I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Kensington Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Poppy, Aunt Ginny, and the rest of the crew are entertaining, as always. Poppy is a relatable protagonist and it is easy to identify with her. The mystery is fast paced and kept me guessing. I enjoyed how the mystery’s conclusion had several layers of depth that many cozy mysteries do not have. Another winner for author Libby Klein!

Review:
I really enjoy the characters, they are funny, quirky and caring. I really enjoy the relationship between Poppy and Aunt Ginny, you can tell how much they love each other. And the biddies add a lot to the story and brought a lot of humor. And I love Figaro, Poppy’s cat, and all of the antics that he pulls. I have to say that I am not a fan of this love triangle and I really hope Poppy makes up her mind in the next book. That is only my opinion and other readers may not agree with me.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and that added so much to the story. Through much of the book I felt like I was right there listening in on conversations and watching all of the action at the theater. There were a few mysteries to solve, which I really enjoyed.
I enjoy this series a lot and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well written cozy mystery. With plenty of laughs and delightful characters, what’s not to love?
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Poppy McAllister is normally baking gluten-free goodies in Cape May, NJ and juggling the romantic attention of two suitors, Tim and Gia. As book four begins, she volunteers at the theater production of “Mamma Mia” which is casting at the Senior Center. Royce Ricardo, an old flame of Aunt Ginny’s is the lead male actor. Aunt Ginny and her flippant and savvy tribe of older lady friends try out for various parts during auditions. Wha-la! The humor begins!
When another actress, Blanche aka Moira, sweeps the lead actress role from Aunt Ginny, she and her old biddy friends are up to mischief using their senior sleuthing skills when sabotage and threats happen on set; then an actor dies falling from the catwalk.
Speaking of cats, Figaro is Poppy’s purrsnickety Persian and his purrsonality is a hoot! He thinks he rules the quaint Butterfly Wings Bed & Breakfast Inn that Poppy and Aunt Ginny own. The Inn is being targeted by a troll who keeps leaving obnoxious fake reviews on travel sites and Poppy is hot on their trail.
The female characters in this story are spunky, saucy, and strong-willed. They’re determined to get to the bottom of the on-set mysteries while the show goes on and before someone else is hurt.
Action keeps the plot moving swiftly, plus the dialogue and events are frequently hilarious! I laughed out loud many, many times!
Eventually, between the police, Poppy, and the senior sleuths task force, the suspects get narrowed down and explanations for certain occurrences are exposed. There are also a couple of subplots in the storyline that are wrapped up at the end, along with the killer reveal. To me, it’s very clear which suitor Poppy chooses! The author gifts readers with some delicious gluten-free recipes after the story.
If you haven’t met Poppy McAllister, now is the time! I think it’s best to start with the first book and read in order so you’ll know the characters. I love this comical cozy mystery series!
Thank you to the Author for providing a galley ARC for an honest review.
Theater Nights are Murder is the fourth book in Libby Klein’s Poppy McAllister cozy mystery series. The story begins exactly where Restaurant Weeks are Murder leaves off. Poppy just finished off restaurant week where she was on Tim, her ex’s cooking team and her other love interest was on another team. Talk about tense. Poppy is also going to be working for both men; in Tim’s restaurant and Gia’s coffeeshop. It will be nice when Poppy picks a side. I’m not one for long-term love triangles. Theater Nights are Murder takes a turn and we find Poppy’s not the only one with a conundrum of the male type.
Aunt Ginny suddenly learns her old high school boyfriend has retired and is on his way back to New Jersey. It seems he will be playing the male lead in the senior center production of Mamma Mia. The town is abuzz about the return of Royce and the play. Only, as the rehearsals begin, the trouble also starts. Strange happenings, sabotage, and theft are just the beginning as one of the cast members falls from the catwalk to his death, the thought of murder rears its ugly head.
Book four is just as wonderful as the rest of the books in the series. Theater Nights are Murder pulled me in and kept me engaged from the very beginning. The author put a lot of thought into this book concerning Poppy’s life, the life of her Aunt Ginny, and the romantic entanglements of both. Poppy is a wonderful main character. She’s not perfect, not supermodel thin, yet has a personality that is awesome. She’s a very realistic character and funny. This book is full of wit, snark, and humor. Poppy’s Aunt Ginny is a such a quirky character, too. I love her antics.
The strong character development and world building continues in Theater Nights are Murder. The book is written with realism that I could feel. I love how the author continues to develop Poppy. She uprooted herself from where she lived with her late husband and took on the caretaker role for Aunt Ginny – who is healthy and spry but needs a little bit of looking after. She changes her diet, meets a new flame and reunites with an old flame, and begins new business ventures. The author takes these themes and combines them into fantastic books in a terrific series. I have devoured each and every book in the Poppy McAllister series. I look forward to book five!
I was provided an ARC of this book to read.
I have been a fan of this series since the first book and have enjoyed them all. This one was a bit off for me. I love the characters. They are well written and diverse. There is tons of humor and great dialogue. The relationship between Poppy and Aunt Ginny is full of warmth, humor, and love. Where this book fell apart for me is with the mystery and the love triangle. I am not a fan of the love triangle in any books and the longer this one draws out the less interested I find myself becoming in the outcome. I think the author needs to wrap up that storyline at the beginning of the next book. I also thought there were too many things going on in this book in terms of mysteries that needed to be solved. I felt like my focus was fractured and I was having a hard time keeping track of all of the storylines and mini-mysteries.
I really enjoy this series and feel like this was a one-off in terms of a miss for me. I’ll return for the next book in the series and depending on whether or not the author solves the love triangle will determine if I continue with the series.
I voluntarily read a digital ARC provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley.
Poppy McAllister has her hands full with running her B&B, baking for two restaurants, and choosing between her two love interests. But she’s not the only one with boyfriend drama. Her aunt Ginny’s high school boyfriend has retired from Broadway and is returning home to play the male lead in the senior center’s theater production of Mamma Mia. Everyone is really excited about the play. But when bizarre accidents start happening, and a man falls to his death, it becomes clear that someone is willing to do whatever it takes to get the play shut down. Poppy and the biddies decide to get to the bottom of things before the killer strikes again.
Theatre Nights Are Murder is a humorous and entertaining cozy mystery that kept me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. It has a quirky, well-rounded cast of characters and mouthwatering descriptions of food. Poppy was such a lovable and realistic character. It was very easy to root for her and relate to her weight loss struggles. The murder mystery kept me guessing and I didn’t know who the killer was until the reveal. There’s also a fun second mystery with Poppy trying to figure out who is responsible for leaving fake and negative reviews about the B&B. Overall, I really liked this book and will be reading more by Libby Klein.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love this series, but hands down this is Klein’s funniest so far. Poppy and the biddies are part of a production at the senior center. It’s MAMA MIA, and what could go wrong? The characters are quirky, and it’s a fun mystery that you need to add to your reading list. And if there wasn’t enough people drama, there’s Figaro the cat and his antics.
Fantastic book!! Aunt Ginny’s old high school boyfriend, Royce, who went on to be a Broadway star, is back in Cape May to act in the senior center’s production of Mamma Mia. One of the men has been trying to get his play put on instead. During the rehearsals strange pranks and accidents keep happening. When Duke, the man who had written a play, is found dead after a fall from the catwalk with a suicide note in his pocket, everyone wonders what happened. It becomes clear it wasn’t an accident and Poppy wonders if maybe Royce was the intended target. Between more accidents and rehearsals, Poppy, her aunt, and her aunt’s friends investigate. Poppy is also dealing with running her Bed and Breakfast, someone leaving bad reviews about the B and B, and trying to choose between Tim and Gia. This book was very entertaining with lots to keep you intrigued. Poppy’s Aunt Ginny and her friends are a riot! I’m interested to see who Poppy will end up with. My vote is for Gia as I feel like Tim doesn’t really seem to have the time for Poppy and brushes her off a lot. Can’t wait to read more of this wonderful series!!
Aunt Ginny is at it again, and making Poppy’s life…um….interesting in Libby Klein’s latest release, Theater Nights Are Murder. The series revolves around Poppy McAllister, a forty-something plus size widow, who moves home to Cape May, NJ to care for her Aunt Ginny, who has the filter of a five year old. This current tale has the Cape May Senior Center putting on a production of Mamma Mia, with Aunt Ginny’s high school flame Royce Hansen in the lead. Almost as soon as rehearsals begin, props and sets are sabotaged. When a cast member falls from the catwalk to his death, Poppy refuses to believe it was an accident and starts to investigate.
I love this series and I thoroughly enjoyed this outing. In addition to Aunt Ginny, Poppy also has to deal with “the biddies”, three lifelong friends of Aunt Ginny’s – Mrs. Davis,Mrs. Dodson, and Mother Gibson. All four are involved with the play, and when they decide to play detective, Poppy has her hands more than full. I really love the humor of the biddies and they were especially entertaining in this story. And of course, Aunt Ginny and Poppy’s relationship was as crazy and heartwarming as ever. Aunt Ginny may be unpredictable, but she also cares a great deal about Poppy and shows it in wonderful and unexpected ways.
I also love the fact that author Libby Klein is extremely skilled at character development. In each story, Poppy grows a little more in confidence and learns a little bit more about herself and her value. She’s also very compassionate; even though she is in a love triangle and enjoying the attentions of two men – Tim, her former high school sweetheart and Gia, a sexy Italian coffeeshop owner for whom she bakes gluten free goodies – Poppy is acutely aware of the fact that by making a decision she will hurt one of the men. Her compassion and thoughtfulness is one of the things I love most about her.
The mystery is a good one with plenty of red herrings and suspects. There are also a number of very funny “theater jokes” and descriptions of rehearsals and performances gone wrong. The murderer was sort of on my radar but not one of my top suspects, so the reveal was a surprise. A couple of other “subplot” mysteries just added to the fun.
This series is highly recommended. While each book can be read as a standalone, it’s more fun to start from the beginning so you can experience Poppy’s growth. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
When the Senior Center begins production of the play Mama Mia, each rehearsal is cursed from the beginning by sabotage! When the murder of a well-loved senior occurs, octogenarian Aunt Ginny, and her crew, affectionately known as “The Biddies,” insert themselves into the investigation. As if Poppy doesn’t have enough going on with her baking business, bad reviews of her Bed & Breakfast, and her love triangle, she now has the task of keeping Aunt Ginny and The Biddies out of trouble while helping to solve the murder!
Once again, author Libby Klein has crafted an entertaining cozy mystery, with many laugh-out-loud moments, as we follow the antics of Aunt Ginny, the Biddies, and the senior cast of Mama Mia. With a mysterious backstory and a show-stopping ending, this book will hold your attention until the very end.
I received this book as a gift and appreciate the opportunity to leave my review.
I love the characters in this series and Aunt Ginny and “the biddies” had me laughing out loud many times in this book with their antics. The Senior Center is putting on Mama Mia and when things start happening at the theater during rehearsals, including a death, they start investigating. Poppy tries to keep them out of danger, but isn’t always successful which is part of the fun. Poppy and Aunt Ginny have a few guests at the Butterfly Wings B&B to take care of so Poppy is spreading herself pretty thin with that and baking for the coffee shop, baking for Maxine’s and doing the lighting for the play. Also, Poppy is trying to figure out what she wants in her romantic life and Gia and Tim are not making it easy for her. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Kensington Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the fourth book in the Poppy McAllister Mystery Series. You shouldn’t read it out of order because you would miss so much fun. Actually each mystery does wrap up so you could but you really would be missing out on a lot. There is a love triangle, most likely going to wrap up, at least temporarily, soon. I have confidence in the author to not drag that on. But love is elusive and fickle at times, so who knows if Poppy’s choice works out or not? I’m leaning towards being Team Gia but, still having feelings for my first love..I wouldn’t hate if she chooses Tim. Then there is the relationship that builds with each book between Poppy, her Aunt Ginny and the Biddies. Trust me, you don’t want to miss any of that action. Every book just gets better until we arrive at this one. This book had me cry-laughing. The worst thing is I would wake in the middle of the night and start reading. I have no idea why. I know better. I know Libby Klein is going to get me in trouble. But some things are just worth it. So there I was, trying not to wake a bear, loving my kindle because you can easily read under the covers, tears streaming while I was trying not to laugh out loud. Suddenly, I hear a deep voice say a naughty word followed by which aunt? (I have a similar issue with another book aunt). I answer Aunt Ginny. After a pause, the voice, “why aren’t we listening to it? You act like she’s just your aunt.” Huh? Who knew? So I’ll be investing in the audiobook soon. Whichever form you prefer, be ready for a good time.
There is a bit more going on in this book but I loved it. The surprises, (there were a few), wrap up nicely and, I felt, enhanced the series. Libby Klein has me hooked, (apparently the bear, too). Get the book, (or the four of them), and get hooked.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced reader copy. I voluntarily reviewed, and purchased, this book.
I just love the Biddies. What a great group of ladies. Now, saying that, would I want to be the one to keep them out of trouble? Aaaa, no. Poppy has her hands full. It makes for great entertainment for the rest of us though. I do wish I could have been in the theater on opening night. What an adventure they had getting to that point. Some folks never get out of that teenager mentality. I think you may come across some surprises as this story unfolds. I know I did. But that’s what we love about reading, right? I can’t wait to see what decisions Poppy makes. I can’t wait to join these crazy ladies on their next adventure. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own. There are also some yummy recipes included for your enjoyment.
Theater Nights Are Murder by Libby Klein Is the fourth in the Poppy McAllister Mystery series. I have only read the third in the series and was anxiously waiting for number four and was not disappointed!
When Aunt Ginny’s high school sweetheart returns to town after retiring from a successful career as an actor on Broadway all eyes are on them, will they rekindle the spark or will he go back to Blanche, who he left town with many years ago.
When the local senior center casts Royce as the lead in a fund raiser play, strange things begin happening. All pretty harmless until another cast member is found dead on the stage. Aunt Ginny and her friends decide to investigate on their own and draw Poppy into the group. Now Poppy is now only investigating the murder, she is baking for Valentines Day, dealing with guests at her Bed and Breakfast, in charge of lighting for the play, bad reviews for the B&B, and being in a love triangle.
This story has plenty of suspects, family love, friendship, great characters, an ornery cat and humor. I laughed out loud numerous times and had tears running down my cheeks. There are also some yummy sounding gluten free recipes included.
I was given an ARC be NetGalley and Kensington for an honest review.
Oh, Libby, Libby, Libby. Your books pull me in with the promise of great mysteries to solve (and they always are), but keep me laughing so hard my sides hurt! With lines like . . . It wasn’t my proudest moment, being shaken down by four old ladies . . . THEATER NIGHTS ARE MURDER is no different, and my tissue box stayed close at hand for all the tears of laughter!
Author Libby Klein has been a breath of fresh air since her first book, CLASS REUNIONS ARE MURDER. I knew she was going to be a booming voice in the cozy mystery genre, and she has not let me down.
The way this tale took off from the first page I knew I was in for an amazing read. THEATER NIGHTS ARE MURDER, book four in the Poppy McAllister Mysteries, is more than just a cozy mystery. This book is a character driven, impossible to put down, page turning, action filled, laugh inducing, first class mystery and all around brilliantly written story from cover to cover.
Fans of this series are going to be thrilled with this latest installment. Those new to the series are going to kick themselves for not having started it sooner.
By far one of my favorite books of 2019, THEATER NIGHTS ARE MURDER is my number one recommendation to start off your 2020 reading list. (Release Dec 31, 2020)
Reading Libby Klein’s Theater Nights Are Murder was an absolutely lovely way to spend an afternoon. I laughed my way through the adventures of Poppy, Aunt Ginny, Sawyer, the biddies, and of course Figaro, all while playing armchair detective, attempting to figure out who was wreaking havoc on the Cape May Senior Center’s production of Mamma Mia! and why. Probably not the wisest decision to open a play on Friday the 13th, but Poppy and the gang persevere, dealing with decades old heartbreak, trolling reviewers, secret admirers, and whole slew of other obstacles in their usual comical style – I loved it! A+++
This is the 4th in the series and I have enjoyed every one of them. My only issue with this one is that it too long to produce the corpse. Almost at the one third mark and, for me, that’s a bit too long. All of Poppy’s issues with which boyfriend will be the one for her overshadowed the beginning. But, overall, that was a minor point unless you don’t like romance in your mystery. Poppy’s quirky Aunt Ginny is also having issues in the romance department and it culminates in the senior citizen production of Mama Mia! when her high school heart throb has retired from the theater and has come back to town to star in the show. Aunt Ginny wants the staring role but that isn’t happening. What is happening? Various acts of sabotage happen and then a man falls to his death from the catwalk. On top of catching a killer, Poppy’s trying to track down the troll who is posting negative reviews on line about their B&B, a real killer for business.
There is lots going on in this mystery and it kept me turning the pages and laughing at the antics of Aunt Ginny and the Biddies. A very funny group of ladies. I have liked each book in this series and the next one will easily find its place on my must read list.
This fourth book in Libby Klein’s Poppy McAllister series was so hard to put down! Though it takes place in Cape May’s off season, Poppy is keeping busy making baked goods for Gia’s coffee shop, Tim’s restaurant and her B&B, hosting two couples for their Valentine getaway, and helping with the senior center’s production of Mamma Mia. Of course you can’t have a mystery without a whodunit, and this book is bursting with them. Strange accidents, a suspicious suicide, and Poppy’s housekeeper accusing two of the B&B’s guests with theft all kept me eagerly reading and guessing. I was completely blown away by the culprit reveals and a surprise ending to Mamma Mia’s opening night. The characters in this series are well developed and full of personality. I so appreciate Poppy’s sarcasm and sense of humor and Figaro, Aunt Ginny, and the biddies are such a hoot! And I’m so glad to not be in Poppy’s place, trying to decide whether to date Gia or Tim.
I hope this will be a long running series, because it’s definitely one of my favorites!
I received an advance copy of this book. This honest review contains my own thoughts and opinions.
