Twenty-two-year-old historical romance writer Nicole Blake, or N.S. Blake to her readers, hasn’t taken an official poll, mind you, but she is convinced she may be the only romance author on the planet who is still a card-carrying member of the virgin club.
Not that she hasn’t tried to end her membership. Life just keeps finding pesky ways to interfere. With no prospects on the horizon, Nicole begins to feel like the closest she will ever get to experiencing a man is within her own stories.
Opportunity presents itself in the form of hot-as-sin-on-a-lollipop-stick bartender/premed student Alec Petropoulos, who agrees to be the cover model for her upcoming book. Sparks fly instantly between them, and Nicole begins to entertain the possibility that she’s finally found the right guy to hand over her tattered V-card. Alec has all the makings for a perfect one-night-stand candidate except, much to Nicole’s surprise, he seems to be the only man in existence not interested in bagging a virgin.
Stuck between a rock and a stubborn male, what’s a virgin to do? Seduce him, of course. How hard could it be? If it works for the characters in her stories, why wouldn’t it work for her? After all, what happens under the cover…stays under the cover.

According to Amazon, I originally one-clicked this novel on November 27, 2014. That was so long ago, wow! Finally last weekend, I was in the mood for a novel with a virgin romance author trope and dove in.
I really liked the cover and how it tied in well to the story. I also loved all the what it’s like to be an indie writer details. Nicole Blake (or N.S. Blake to her readers) was living her dream as a young professional independent historical romance author while still in college pursuing a formal degree. She was one of the lucky ones and could let her degree be a fall back if she needed to give teaching a try someday. Her relationship with her bestie Olivia was odd language-wise but based on love and a professional partnership that was lucrative for them both.
Olivia, who did double duty as her book cover designer/photographer, interrupted Nicole one day while she was on a writing roll and begged her to come down to the latest photoshoot without delay. Why the urgency though? I missed why really. I questioned it in the moment and probably should have reread to make sure I understood it. But I was too lazy to do so and what came out of that was Nicole being introduced to medical school student Alec Petropoulos.
Now Nicole had a sinfully sexy male candidate for help eliminating her pesky V-card. Only Alec put the brakes on her plan (for his own very valid reasons) once she admitted her virgin status. He suggested they be friends only. Understandably her ego got bruised badly, but I could see the wisdom in them getting to know each other a bit before heating things up again. The drama and humor as they worked together doing book signing events was entertaining although not quite what I had in mind when I picked this story for my Sunday reading pleasure.
My favorite quote that summed their journey up well:
‘We had everything a good romance story needed – a rocky beginning, a slow build to a budding relationship several hurdles to overcome, and finally, a happily ever after’ ~Nicole
Next up in this series:
Yes, there is a sequel entitled Writing a Wrong (Write Stuff, #2). However, I don’t feel a sense of urgency to read it yet since I don’t already own it. This is why I normally wait to collect an entire series before diving in so I don’t have to think guiltily about whether or not I should read a book from my collection or buy this new book.
But also, I feel that this first novel really can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel for now. I will probably read the sequel someday when I’m in the mood to see how Nicole and Alec navigated their new life together as a permanent couple and also for an update on Olivia. I’m hoping Olivia gave Taylor, whom she dumped when things were getting serious on his part, another chance to prove to her he is the One.
