I love Christina dodd’s virtue series, and The Woman Who Couldn’t scream was a great read!! So many awesome characters,it’s always like coming home when I pick up one of her books. In this book sheriff kateri is back on duty after being shot and not only is she hunting the shooter, but she meets up with her childhood friend merry who goes by merida. And merida is in virtue with revenge on her mind for the man who tried to kill her years ago.Because of him she was in a loveless marrige with a very powerful man who made her life a living hell. But theirs also another killer in virtue ,and he’s getting closer to merida. Twist’s and turns that keep you going til the end. And my fave Indian hot stuff stag is back!! Love this mysterious bad boy!!
The Woman Who Couldn’t Scream by Christina Dodd was another suspenseful thrill ride from the first page until the end.
This story invites the readers into Kateri’s life so we get a chance to know Kateri from her childhood through her adolescence. It also introduced us to a childhood friend of Kateri’s, Merida Falcon. She has a story that is truly dramatic and heartbreaking. However, she is a strong woman and has survived. This books two stories but so tightly interwoven that as the story progressed I was drawn more and more into it. A intricate plot, strong characters, plenty of twists to keep a reader guessing and two HEAs. However, I do have a question for Ms. Dodd – what happened to Uncle Albert and Aunt Rose? I would love to know that justice was served. I also want to thank Ms. Dodd for Rainbow. As much I as loved Kateri, I loved Rainbow more for the unique person that she was in each book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
I have all the previous books with these characters. Looking forward to the next. Great author !
Once you start, you have to finish. Excellent story.
There are several story lines but the one I liked the best was Helen’s. She’s the woman who couldn’t scream. She sets out to take revenge on the man responsible for her handicap. Lots of twists and turns. I also liked Lilith. She was hot and cold and the surprise ending reveals her motives.
Loved this book and it drew me right into Virtue Falls, Washington. A small community with a part American Indian Sheriff, Kateri, and her deputies deal with drug smugglers and drunks. A resort community with the beaches and deep woods nearby and a cast of characters that you won’t forget. Bertha and her bar, Rainbow, the favorite waitress, the quilters, Stag Denali, the boyfriend of Kateri and a one time felon, and Lacey, dog extraordinary.
This is a suspense, thriller, mystery, romantic, and fun read. Merida is a friend of Kateri from childhood and she has come back to Virtue Falls…with a different face, money, mute, and with an agenda.
Then there is the weird B and B, run by Phoebe, and now full of guests like Merida, Benedict, the Cipros and Lilith. Lilith, it seems, is Kateris half sister and is also on a secret mission. And like an Agatha Christie novel, all the guests are very involved in each others lives. For a minute, I thought that this would not work or be improbable…….leave that thought out…this mystery, romance, past and present mesh very well! And you have the Frog God as native lore is also present and important to the story.
Humor is provided and appreciated as is the atmosphere at night with the fog and terror as someone seems to be cutting women’s faces off. If thst isn’t enough, the druggie Terrance has shot up the town keeping everybody on edge and beloved Rainbow near death. Meanwhile Merida is planning to deal with the man she feels left her to die years ago while Benedict feels he knows her but the face is wrong. Kateri deals with new deputies like Moen that just say what they think….and thinking seems to be a problem for them!
Who is following whom and why is the B and B at the center of it all?
Scary, creepy, laugh out loud funny, and an ending that makes you smile. And there is more than one killer so beware, lock the doors, and enjoy the suspense. 5 stars
Love this series! Cant wait ro see what happens next.
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.
Helen is the trophy wife of a very rich old man. He treats her as if he owns her and in a very real way, he does. Helen is the perfect woman, beautiful, build and silent. A traumatic accident years before left her without the ability to speak. After he dies, Helen reinvents herself yet again. She disappears and remerges as the beautiful, reclusive Merida Falcon in the small coastal town of Virtue Falls, WA. Her plan is to exact revenge on the ones responsible for her life altering accident. Only one problem, too many people know her from her previous life and someone wants her dead.
Full of intrigue and mystery. Also romantic.
Great suspenseful book Characters have issues, but all works out in the end.
Love the series
I am a fan of Virtue Falls and really enjoy the characters and the storylines. Meet Merida Falcon also known by other names but a friend to newly elected Virtue Falls sheriff Kateri Kwinault. Merida comes to Virtue Falls to hide and prepare her revenge on someone from her past. Merida cannot speak and she cannot scream. The story unfolds with Merida meeting people from her past who also slowly begin to appear in Virtue Falls. Meanwhile Kateri has her own demons from the past she must deal with along with her new duties of sheriff. Adding to the mix is the killer in town who is slashing and murdering women. Is the killer after Merida or is this town once again facing a murderer on the loose?
I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I think, The Woman Who Couldn’t Scream, is my favorite from the Virtue Falls series. The reader gets some background behind Kateri Kwinault’s early childhood, learns of a long lost sister, and an old childhood friend. There’s plenty of mystery and a touch of the supernatural.
The story opens with Helen Brassard, who is the beautiful young wife of the billionaire Nauplius Brassard. Helen is mute. She was in a terrible accident. After Helen’s husband died, she disappears and starts a new life and reinvents herself. She heads to Virtue Falls with a plan in motion.
Kateri, is now Sheriff of Virtue Falls, and has her hands full of chasing down two drug dealers who escaped jail and put Rainbow in the hospital with a coma, and injured Kateri. Stag Denali keeps popping up when Kateri needs him. Although, she enjoys his company, she is also suspicious of him. Stag served time for murder, with circulating rumors of being in the Mob. While trying to capture the escapees; there is a report of a slashing.
At the cafe, Kateri encounters Merida Falcon, who seems to know her. After closer inspection, Kateri recognizes Merida, as her old childhood friend from twenty years ago. While Kateri is having breakfast, an officer comes in to inform her about a woman at the police station, waiting to speak with Kateri. A woman, that all the officers are avoiding, who turns out to be Kateri’s wicked stepsister, delivering news.
Kateri is faced with proving that she can handle being Sheriff, in a town not keen on a woman being in that position. With one escapee left, Kateri needs to figure out if the slashings are tied to him, or if there’s more perps targeting the women of Virtue Falls. She’ll need to figure out why her sister’s visit wasn’t just to deliver news, but what her sister so badly wants and why. Then there’s the situation with Stag to contend with and the threat Merida was given…a reminder that, she can’t scream. Kateri possesses capabilities to save lives; knowing that Rainbow is close to death, Kateri wants to try to save Rainbow, but fears she could send Rainbow towards death. Kateri does the only thing she doesn’t want to do, heads to the ocean.
Christina Dodd is a master of the mystery/romance/thriller genre. This is the 4th book in the Virtue Falls series but each can easily be read as a standalone. The references to the other books are all explained without it becoming repetitive.
Sheriff Kateri Kwinault has no idea what is on it’s way to Virtue Falls. She’s trying to track down a father son duo that have been in a crime spree. The Terrances are drug dealers, prison escapees, & are armed & extremely dangerous. They’d already attempted to kill her in a drive by shooting. Instead the waitress was in the hospital in a coma. While she is hunting these two, they start to find bodies with their hands, face &/or necks cut up. Is there a serial killer around? Is it the work of the Terrances or someone else? During all of this drama, two visitors surprise her – her step sister & her childhood friend. What do they want? Are they involved in everything going on?
Merida Falcon has come to Virtue Falls to exact revenge on the man that she thinks stole her life away. She wanted to reconnect with her childhood friend Kateri too. Merida was known as Merry Byrd when Kateri knew her. However, she was involved in a plane explosion & had to get massive plastic surgery. She had to make an unholy alliance in order to afford it & married a man years older who had to control her. She’s changed her appearance dramatically from what she looked like when she was married. How are so many people in Virtue Falls that knew her from her former life? And how are they all recognizing her? Why does she feel like someone is stalking her?
This book has a fast paced high intensity plot with a variety of twists & turns. There is a lot going on but it isn’t disjointed at all. Everything happens in its time & for a reason. As a reader, every time I felt something had reached its climax, something else happened & you were off & running again. The relationship between Kateri & Stag is going strong & is emotionally intense. This book has everything needed to grip the reader’s attention & not let it go until the book is finished.
