This book has me feeling some kind of way! The twists. The turns. My brain is still recovering. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I am going to need to reread this one for sure!! I will say that I loved certain characters in the beginning but hated them in the end. I have so many questions. If you enjoy psychological thrillers this is the book for you!
Interesting read. I went from just knowing Thursday was sane and going through a coming to a Higher Power to then believing she is crazy and then back to she’s onto something! The end was one of the conclusions I had come to, but it was still a surprise and good ending. Thursday’s husband, Seth, has two other wives. Their agreement is the three wives will not meet each other, and none of the wives know the other’s names. Thursday is in love, and she is willing to be one of three. Seth manages his three wives and three lives well, but he wants children. After his first wife lost a baby, she refuses to try again. Thursday is Seth’s answer, but she also miscarries and she is unable now unable to have children. Wife no. 3 is added to give Seth the children he wants. Thursday finds a receipt in one of Seth’s jackets, and this starts a journey that Thursday cannot come back from. She is on a mission to meet the other two wives. This mission becomes weirder and odder as the story progresses, and it continues to mislead the reader. It was an enjoyable read.
Loved it all the way up to the end! The ending ruined the whole book for me.
Great book! It kept me captivated. Would definitely recommend it.
The story did keep me intrigued, wondering and guessing all the way but I found the ending disappointing. About two-thirds of the way through, it felt like the author was waffling and couldn’t decide if Thursday was the problem or not.
This book was legit! I had no idea what to expect. Tarryn Fisher is one of my one-click buys because of books like this. She gives you everything you never knew you wanted and more!
I finished The Wives last night, after an evening of being almost physically incapable of putting it down. And still, hours later, I have no idea what I just read. And I mean that in the best possible way. I’ve been on a bit of a thirller kick lately, and this one did NOT disappoint.
The story is told from the point of view of Thursday, Seth’s legal wife. As the blurb suggests, this is an important distinction as there are two other wives, one before and one after. It’s an arrangement she agreed to because she is in love with Seth. But as time goes on, the loneliness of having her husband a single night a week begins to weigh on her. But everything changes for her when she finds something that she never should have.
Details would spoil the surprises, so I will it at that. Suffice it to say that the story is incredibly engrossing! There are a lot of pieces in the story, and they come together in expected ways, shatter apart, come together, and shatter again. When it all finally comes together, it is masterfully bonkers.
For me, part of what made it such an experience to read was the fact that Thursday, despite being the “heroine” of the story, was generally pretty unlikable for much of the story. She was far from perfect. That may not sound terribly selling as a lead character, but stick with me… her characterization, unlikable parts and all, were what made her story so interesting.
The easy way she accepted this nontraditional marriage, something that had never been a part of her ideology, could be seen as unbelievable. After, all, everything she did became about Seth, her desperate to desire to be who he wanted most in the world. On the days he wasn’t by her side, she drank too much and pined for him, wondering obsessively what he was doing with his other wives. She completely gave all that she was over to him. But instead of being unbelievable, it was who she was, her dynamic within both their relationship and within the story. Did it drive me nuts, the subjugated role she made for herself? Absolutely. But without Thursday being exactly who she was, the rest of the story could not have existed.
And the ending? I. LOVED. IT.
My recommendation: If you love a great thriller with a lot of twists and turns, this is a great book! It’s a fast-paced read with no end of surprises!
My Rating: 1/4
Type: Standalone
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Narration: single POV
I had heard some wonderful reviews about this book. I wanted to pick this for a long time and finally picked it up. Somehow, this book was disappointing to me. It didn’t live up to my expectations.
Story is told by heroine Thursday’s point of view. As blurb says, Thursday has entered a unique arrangement with her husband. Her husband has other two wives. She lives in Seattle working as a nurse. Her husband Seth only sees her on Thursdays. All wives are aware of this arrangement but have never met each other or know about the other. His time with other wives is divided equally or so he says. When Thursday stumbles upon an information, she gets curious and starts digging more about his other wives.
Slowly plot takes a different turn when the truth behind this arrangement is reveled. The plot looks simple on surface, but as the chapters are unfolded it bides you with the suspense. The polygamist concepts didn’t bide well with me. Yet, I was curious to see how this would turn out. This book doesn’t focus anything on the polygamist concept as well. It started being crazy, with so many convoluted twists, all of which are ridiculous and cannot possibly happen.
The reason I rated this low is for two reasons. One – it felt like story dragged in the middle a bit and characters became different people than what it started. Secondly, I felt like the twist could have been executed and developed better as it has been written by a very seasoned author. I was also detached from heroine, Thursday as it felt like she didn’t have a personality of her own.
Writing style was good. Plot moved well initially and dragged a bit in middle and picked up in fast pace in the ending. Some questions still remain unanswered.
Overall, I would recommend this to psychological thriller lovers. If you enjoy some craziness factor, this one might be for you!

This is an intense book! I loved it!
HOLY BUCKETS. This book was a wild ride. It was so well orchestrated, and the way the twists were handled… wow. It focuses a lot on mental health and the struggles that come with it, but the storyline was excellent. It was a fast paced, well written plot and the characters were great. Another incredible storyline from @Tarryn Fisher. There is so much damn vulnerability and truth in her female leads that it makes me want to cry because I feel seen. Definitely recommend this one! #thewives #tarrynfisher #excellent #thriller #suspense #katyapproved #bookstagram #bookstagrammer
This book was so interesting, I love a good psychological thriller. I wasn’t sure exactly where it was heading and was slightly disappointed in the unreliable narrator once we realized what was truly happening in the end, I was kind of hoping all of the things she thought were real were, would’ve loved to hear that alternate ending but regardless it was a good read!
Wow. I could not stomach this one… It seems most of the reviews are raves or regrets, and I’m firmly in the latter camp.
I didn’t know the author before this title – I was curious and intrigued, both by the fantastic cover and the blurb, which promised a thriller and a mystery, set in a less-common world (polygamous marriage) than most. Sounded good to me, so I requested it tout suite. I’m really going to have to start looking authors up before doing that – this is not the first time I’ve been surprised by an author’s shift into a new genre, nor is it the first time I’ve been disappointed at the way that worked out…
Turns out, Fisher is best known for romance. And fairly hard-core, explicit, romance, from what I gleaned on Amazon…
That is not my jam, and the writing in this one reinforced why for me from the opening pages. It’s a bit more graphic than I expected, and OH MY GOOD GOD but the main character is pathetic. It starts by referring to her as “Thursday” since she sees her husband on, wait for it, Thursday. Then you learn it’s ACTUALLY HER NAME. She literally only exists as the day her husband is with her. Oh goody – this one’s RIGHT up my alley… (not) From there it only gets worse – if you can imagine such a thing. Because she also FIGURATIVELY only exists for him. Every single thing she says/does is about pleasing him, making him want her, how meaningless and banal her life is without him, how all she does is kill time until she sees him again… Again – right up my alley.
The blurb hints at dangers and lies and secrets. I’ve seen references to Gone Girl (will someone PLEASE tell people that this is not a compliment and to stop trying to write/rewrite/alt-write GG). And I’ve read reviews talking about the mind-blowing twist. So I assume there’s an unreliable narrator being sad and pathetic on purpose to set up the hook – but honestly I couldn’t even gin up enough interest to skim ahead to see what said hook/twist might entail. I was too irritated from the get-go by the characterization (such as it is, since she is only ever described in terms of her relationship to him) and too turned off by the romance feel to get into this one. I am clearly NOT the target audience here and wasn’t able to finish as a result…
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my obligation-free review copy.
What did I just read? I don’t know but it had me riveted. It’s like the trashy show you love to watch but don’t admit you love it, even when you say you don’t miss an episode. Every time I had to put this book down, all I wanted to do was read more. I fell asleep reading it. Woke up to read it. Got mad when I needed to put it down. I was already mad, too. I wanted to smack everyone in the head and say what are you doing?
I love that this book had discussion questions included at the end. Even if I am not reading in a group, I love answering the questions and exploring my thoughts and feelings. There was a lot in this book. What would I do if my husband had two other wives? I’m not sure about two but after being with my ex husband for fifteen years, I accidentally heard him having a phone conversation with a woman I thought was his ex wife. In that conversation he told her he refused to give her a divorce as he didn’t want one. I know what I did with that bombshell. So yes, I had some experience with the plot. Man. What a twisted plot it was, too! If you are thinking of reading this book, push yourself through the anger you will probably feel at everyone. The twists, and there is more than one, are crazy!
The only thing I really felt was excessive was the profanity. I’m not usually one to be bothered by it. I use it on a regular basis. But I was tired of it pretty quick and made a mental note to myself regarding it’s usage in my life. There are a lot of words out there so it might have been more interesting to see how many ways the author could have said what she said without using the same words over. On the other hand, it was a part of Thursday’s speech pattern, I guess. Looking at my own, the author might have been being true to Thursday. So be aware that it’s there and excessive in the first part of the book. I either was numbed to it in the second half or there wasn’t as much because it didn’t bother me then. Maybe I was just too occupied at trying to follow the rabbit down the hole. Haha.
The ending of the book is something I suspect some will not like. I’m not giving a spoiler because why read the book if I do. I’m just going to say, if you didn’t like it, think about it for awhile. Go back, in your mind, over all of Thursday’s experiences. It clarified what happened for me and I thought it fit.
Do I recommend this book? If you absolutely have an issue with profanity, I wouldn’t. I have read too many reviews that are low stars and start off with I couldn’t read it because of the words used. The story is captivating. If you can’t get passed the language then don’t read it or, at least, don’t review what you haven’t read. If you can handle the language then I am definitely going to tell you to read it. I’m going to tell you to not be like me. Set aside an entire day to read it. It’s that riveting. Like make something in the slow cooker so nobody starves, tell everyone all the coffee is yours and get comfy. I might even tell you that you may want to drop some hints about how nice it would be if someone will occasionally drop some fresh coffee in your cup so you don’t need to stop and do it. Now go read the book.
With so many thrillers out there it’s a challenge to create one that still surprises readers. This book will keep you turning pages until the very end, where there is still one more surprise!
A really clever story, and well written believable characters.
Wow! The book lays out what happens between a man and 3 wives. A lot of pathology, everyone is self serving and it seems no one is capable of telling the truth or the whole truth. Things are not as they seem and there is no HEA… except maybe for one person in a rather twisted way. Good book, really interesting how it unfolds.
Loved all the twists and turns with this one!
Awesome book. A quick-paced, suspenseful thrill-ride.
Disappointed by ending. I felt cheated.
I listened to the Audible version of this book and contemplated leaving my headphones on while prepping patients for surgery because I wanted to know how it ended so badly. If you are starting it, make sure you have time to finish it.
