In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better “when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance” (Booklist, starred review). Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange … nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.
And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Loved this book! Very entertaining page-turner that took me by surprise.
Big fan of her books. Never miss one.
I loved it as i do all nora roberts books
I enjoy all her books!
I really enjoyed this book because the characters are well thought out. I was drawn into why the characters acted the way they did, why they were doing what they were doing. Also, there is a cast of characters and you get enough information to draw you in, but not so much that you are bored with extra stuff.
I admit, I enjoy the writing of Nora Roberts very much. Hope you enjoy it as well.
This is by far my most favorite Nora Roberts book! I’ve read it 3 times!!! It’s different, but keeps you there. A real page turner! Couldn’t put it down!
This is one of my old friends – I go back and “visit” it least 2x a year.
One of the authors better books. This one has a twist that makes it interesting. Good characters.
Loved this book. Everything by Nora Roberts is great!
Love all Nora Robert books, always a great read
Loved it!
My FAVOURITE
Teen rebellion should not end in death or running for one’s life. When good girl Elizabeth witnesses the murder of her companions, it is only her quick thinking that allows her to escape.
Armed only with a photographic memory and her high IQ, Elizabeth has to disappear. A dozen years later, Abigail Lowery, a woman of mystery living in a small Ozark town gains the attention of the local Police Chief.
Lowery, a security designer is big on security. She lives alone with a big dog and lots of cameras and fire power. She doesn’t engage with the community. Her home is a fortress and she goes no where without a weapon. Brooks Gleason knows she is scared of something, but he can’t help her if she doesn’t open up.
Fearing the chief is onto her, Abigail considers running again. When she discovers his interest his more personal, she can’t decide what to do, run or make her stand.
As the walls she’s built around her life and heart begin to crumble, Abigail and Brooks face the very real fear that they will be unable to keep each other safe when Abigail once more becomes Elizabeth, the witness.
There is a reason Nora Roberts is Queen of romance. She stays current and relevant to today’s readers. Nora Roberts weaves a spell with her intricate plots and complex characters. The Witness is another example of Ms. Roberts genius and why she still reigns supreme.
One of my favorite Nora Roberts books, read back in May 2013 and have been trying to do a buddy re-read or just alone. I remember this book had some twists and was a nail biter. Lots of suspense, good thriller.
The very best read in a long long time.
I loved this book! I read it in 3 days. I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know how it ended. I loved the dynamic between all of the characters.
Great read..lots of twists and turns.
what can I say its Nora Roberts … she nails it every time.
I really enjoyed this book but I am a fan Nora Roberts
I love this story! I’ve read it a couple of times! The main female character is damaged and afraid but very smart so she has made a good life for herself. The main male character is a marshmallow on the outside but has some pretty steely stuff going on the inside – which turns out to be just what she needs.
