In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better “when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance” (Booklist, starred review). Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange … nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.
And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Love Norah Roberts. This is one of her best! I stayed up all night reading it.
A great Nora Roberts story.
Love everything she writes. Excellent characters.
The story is true Nora Roberts! The characters are great and complicated in a good way. The story keeps you engrossed even though you know who the villan probably is. Love the book
Wow!! this was a wonderful read. I appreciated how it articulated the ways in which we can heal and become different as we learn from and embrace our experiences. I liked that the main character reclaimed her life.
Nora Roberts never disappoints!
So, I’m not a Nora Roberts fan. But this was a good read!
This was a Nora Roberts style story. Lots of intrigue in the plot, a little romance, I was always waiting for the next clue/ development.
This author is awesome
I couldn’t put this book down!
Nora Roberts does it again. It was a great read. Original and one of the, I can’t put this book down to do anything. Thankfully, I have the book so I am able to reread it anytime.
superb. I am not normally a Nora Roberts fan, but this made me rethink things. The lead character is a brillant woman, hiding from some really bad guys and doing it with style and flair and immagination. It really seemed believable, despite the premise and the lenghts she went to cover her tracks. You were rooting for her all the way. The hero, a small town policeman, was also likeable and believable–a great combination. Together they create a good ending, with a ton of twists and turns.
One of my favorite Nora Roberts books. Both the main characters are strong and independen. The story is well developed.
Another homerun by Nora Roberts! Just read it.
Couldn’t put it down!
Nora Roberts has written hundreds of books, but this remains one of my favorites (and my husband’s and daughter’s). A great audio, too. Liz/Abigail’s emotional wounds are deep, but Brooks assuages them. Does Abigail take revenge? Oh yes!
AN over-the-top winner!
Another awesome read by Nora Roberts!!!!!!
Loved the book. The female heroine had a tragic beginning but grew into a beautiful responsive accomplished individual. Read it in 36 hours with time off to sleep. No work done that day
another great n Rberts bbok, action romance and great characters.
