In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better “when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance” (Booklist, starred review). Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange … nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.
And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

This book is full of suspense and romance. It makes you want to keep reading just to see what happens next. Love the main character and her dog. Another great book from Nora!
Nora Roberts weaves a romantic suspense novel in The Witness, an ebook I received from my hometown library!
A young teenager girl, Elizabeth Fitch, rebels against her mother’s strict upbringing and the devastating results cause her to run for her life as she is a witness to murders during this rebellion! She is running from the Russian mafia, the police, and the F.B.I.
Liz ends up in a small town under an assumed name of Abigail Lowery. She protects herself by learning everything she can about the mafia, the F.B.I. and how to protect herself by cyber hacking, security systems, and feeding information to the F.B.I. without their knowledge of her name or whereabouts.
A police chief in this small town, Brooks, notices Abigail and becomes infatuated with this standoffish woman. Of course, a romance between the two develops!
Love Nora Roberts writing style, her characters, and the plot with it’s twists and turns that keeps me guessing until the end. There is complex, descriptive happenings that has produced a can’t-put-down, stand alone, fast paced, very enjoyable book.
Nora Roberts delivers again with a wonderful story that keeps you up turning pages to keep reading this great story. Could not put it down. It has everything you could want in a great story.
This is one of my favorite books by Roberts. Unique plot, showing an independent and amazing heroine. Story is wonderful and ending spectacular. A must read for any Robert’s fan!
Best NR ever!
I absolutely loved this book. The storyline had unpredictable, but believable twists and turns. The main characters were very likeable and engaging. And, the final outcome was very satisfying. Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors.
Great read
A riveting, suspenseful page-turner.
I’ve read this book over and over and still love reading it. I know I’ll read it again!
4.5 Stars
I haven’t ever been compelled to read a Nora Roberts book, but one of her standalones was recommended to me (not this one) some time ago and I was searching for a good audio to listen to. Since Julia Whelan was the narrator of this one, it was a no-brainer to start here.
The Witness was exactly the kind of highly developed romantic suspense that I enjoy. Before I tired of Kristen Ashley’s inability to provide variety in her story-telling, this is what I had found in her books. While I wouldn’t say that their writing styles are similar, they both write stories that are extensively detailed with a number of secondary characters and events that shape the main protagonists and their relationships. This might not be the best story that I’ve ever read, but it was immersive, entertaining, and surprising. When I finished, the characters and their stories felt complete.
Always a great author!
Nora Roberts does it once again. She builds characters that you cheer for. She develops such suspense you can’t put the book down!
Great Nora book
I’m a big fan of Nora Roberts and this is one of my very favorites by her.
This is my favorite romantic suspense book by Nora Roberts, which is saying something since I have read them all. The tension is so extreme at times I had to close the book for a while, just to catch my breath. She balances those moments with warm, humorous breaks while we watch the hero and heroine fall in love, in spite of her realistic fear of commitment. In the end, it’s one of the most satisfying conclusions I’ve ever read. There are so many good books yet to get to, I seldom reread, but I’ve read The Witness three times and will likely read it again fairly soon. It’s just that good.
Anything by Nora Robert’s is a pleasure but this was outstanding !
Also her Eve Dallas/ In Death books published under her nom de plume J. D. Robb
I love whatever Nora Roberts writes. Her books are always entertaining, whether it’s fantasy, serious or otherwise. She runs the gamut of emotions. I’m never disappointed. Witness was a page turner!
Good book like her writing
