” She had always wanted a heart that was as strong as everyone else’s. But to be stronger than others? That was a possibility she could barely understand.”
In this, the first of a nine part series, Margo Blair, a young woman dying of a heart defect, is given a heart that almost is too good to be true. After the death of Lilith Hazelwood, the strongest witch in Oyster Cove, Margo’s surgeon, Dr. Svenson, harvests her organs which will change the lives of 9 people, the first being Margo.
After the successful transplant, all of Margo’s fears seem to vanish. She has a witch’s heart after all. She has a second chance at life, much to the chagrin of the heart’s former owner whose hanging around hoping to find out who actually killed her, and get Margo to enact revenge. When Margo finds out that along with Lilith’s heart she got some of her powers…a whole new kettle of corn begins popping.
Love, revenge and simply life are major things that come Margo’s way. Rip up the will, she’s got a lot of living to do!
What a wonderful fun book. I’d never read Iris Kincaid book before and I was happily lost in the story quickly. This paranormal sort-of romance is fast, fun and anything but cerebral. Highly Recommended.5/5
A unique plot
I loved the uniqueness. What an interesting starting point: a witch dies and her organs are transplanted into humans. What will those organs do to the humans? Her heart goes to Margo, who never expected to get old because of a serious heart condition. This is all so very different than what’s already out there and I loved that, it got me really excited!
This is a 9-book series. There is an overarching storyline: who killed the witch? Don’t expect that mystery to be solved in this book: that is going to take 9 books. But in this book Margo does have a mystery to solve and it does get solved.
Why I didn’t give 5 stars and deducted one star, is that I found the writing style to be… How do I explain this? Often you have one person’s POV, or maybe dual POV. The story comes FROM a person, whether it’s in third or first person. But here it’s in a helicopter-view-y way. The main character of the series is Lilith and the main character of this book is Margo. But you get all the people’s perspectives and that makes it not come FROM Margo but ABOUT her. The focus sometimes just shifted from one person to the next within one paragraph. I hope I am making myself clear. I’ll give an example. Keep in mind the story is about Margo: “Delphine raised an eyebrow. She wasn’t so sure that…” So here you have the thoughts of another person within Margo’s POV. Another example: in the same paragraph we have “Walter felt like yelling” and “Margo thought”. What that meant for me was that I didn’t feel it as much as I would have if it had come FROM the main character. Plus the conversations didn’t have enough descriptive words in between. Whole conversations and only a few ‘Margo said’s or ‘Finn whispered’s, and that’s just not enough information. That made it hard to read at times. Some more thoughts and explanations of what happened in the conversations would have made it better, I believe. There just weren’t enough of Margo’s feelings described. And I like to crawl inside the mind of the protagonist. This made it kind of detached.
But the mystery was clever. I guessed whodunit wrong and I love that. I like how it took a turn that I didn’t expect. That was very well done. And it was well-written, just a different style to what I’m used to. I loved Lilith’s little snippets. It was fun reading about how she watches what Margo does.
I am kind of sad the next book is going to be about another witch and not Margo. But on the other hand: it’s still very exciting! So I will be reading more!
Loved the book.
