Mystery. Magic. Fairy tales that shouldn’t come true.Magic doesn’t grow on trees—except for hedge witches with an affinity for plant magic. Fairy tales are very real in fourteen-year-old Abigail MacQuillan’s world. Bad things happen to children who are lost in the enchanted forest—Fae snatch them up to eat them, witches tempt them into eating their gingerbread cottages to enslave them, and … gingerbread cottages to enslave them, and carnivorous plants lure them into their jaws.
Which is why Abigail most certainly isn’t “lost.” She is on a mission. She must find her missing parents and older brother in the forest before harm befalls them—all while protecting her younger brother as she does so.
Only if Abigail can figure out who in the forest is friend and foe, prove she is as resourceful as her enemies, and come to terms with her own magical gifts in time, will she be able to protect her family from danger.
But will she be able to do so without succumbing to the temptations of dark magic in the process?more
A nightmare witch, strange fae that eat people and tempt children. While Abigail and Emmet are waiting for their older brother Niall to find their parents and return, they encounter a nightmare witch, fae trying to lure them so they can become food, and then they find their brother dead by the Fae. Abigail suffers more heartbreak and to get revenge she becomes the apprentice of the witch. But the next three years won’t be easy and she will suffer much pain. She wants to learn dark magic, but will it darken her soul, or will she stop in time?
A Cauldron Full of Curses becomes the new life of orphan Abigail MacQuillan.
To learn power to avenge her family’s deaths, Abby apprenticed herself to powerful witch Baba Nata. It’s a dark life, full of uncertainty — especially regarding what price Baba will extract from her in return. The only bright spot In the dark, forbidding woods is her friendship with fellow apprentice, Lucifer. Even as they deal with the harsh Baba, danger from the fae and other unseen threats, Abby & Lucy feel the adolescent stirrings of something more than friendship. When they need to travel to the Morty world on an errand, the colors and human interactions make their heads whirl. Their dark life and their ways of coping make this series compelling … and hard to put down.
If you’ve read the “Womby’s School for Wayward Witches” series, you know Clarissa’s adoptive mother Abigail and her cat Lucifer. This series is a prequel to that series, in which we find out more of Abigail’s history: how she lost her parents and brothers, met Lucifer, escaped the Fae and became an apprentice to Baba Nata (the same Baba Nata we meet years later when she gives Missy, Clarissa’s sister, the prophecy that leads to her death).
I enjoyed reading about the early life of Abigail and look forward to the continuation of her story. You’ll enjoy this if you are curious about Abigail and Lucifer, especially why and how he became a cat. There are also episodes before she lost her magic that show how powerful she could have become.
Suitable enough to be included with the tales of the Brothers Grimm
Abigail, a girl with cunning affinity, tries to get herself and her younger brother safely to the portal that will take them morty realm in this first book. As the story progresses danger comes from all directions, help comes from unexpected sources, and everything she once believed is called into question. The Witch of Nightmares is a dark fairy tale suitable enough to be included with the tales of the Brothers Grimm with a blending of multiple folk beliefs. I am extremely interested in seeing where this series goes.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
This was a quick, short story. I was surprised at the direction this took. The characters were interesting. It seemed like the author was trying to get a lot of different things into the story. I don’t think I care to continue this series. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
Heartbreaking and wonderfully written. I love how Abigail embraces her cunning and her magic. I loved meeting Lucifer. I can’t wait to read more!
