History has all but forgotten…
In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth—the ultimate betrayal—that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

Although not my usual style, this book was entertaining.
This is one of my all time favorite books. I love this author, and I think this is the best of all her novels.
I loved this story. It was very hard to put down. Will be looking for other books by this author.
wonderful story. has me now reading other books by the author.
One of the most original books I have ever read. The author weaves the storylines of past and present with effortless ease. I couldn’t put it down!
Loved the book beginning to end.
One of my all-time favorite books. A captivating story, beautifully written. Highly recommend!
5 Stars. Loved this book! Susanna Kearsley writes compelling, deeply romantic stories that make history come alive. Sophia and John are now one of my favorite couples, and I was glad to see their story continued in The Firebird. I’ve discovered that I especially enjoy an historic story told as a modern-day person discovers it by traveling to the …
One of my favorite Susanna Kearsley reads!
So cool! It’s a story within a story. An author goes to Scotland to find inspiration for her book (which you read as she writes it). Very original and fascinating. You can tell the author did her research well! I thought it was enchanting!
I love anything by this author, she writes so originally and so hauntingly
Beautifully written.
I LOVE anything that Susanna Kearsley writes. She yanks you into the story so vividly. So hard to put down anything she constructs. She is an artist with words–a true wordsmith. I am so amazed at how she crafts a story that makes the world around you disappear. It is true escapism. This was the first novel of hers that I’d read, and I was hooked. …
This story is hauntingly beautiful and tearful. I find myself thinking of it still, months after I have read it. Which never happens! The characters are believable and detailed, and the research this author puts into her books has to be intense. Reminds me of the research James Michener put into his books. The Winter Sea was the first book of this …
Bestselling author Carrie MacClellan travels the world, following the stories she writes. Not every tale comes from her imagination, though. Carrie’s always heard whispers, seen hints of things that have happened, and knows how to research into her visions to dig up the true facts behind old ruins and aged letters. She moves to a cottage in Cruden …
What an incredible book! I absolutely loved this book. This starts with writer Carrie McClellan writing a book beginning in France then she goes to Scotland to pick up the rest of the tale. She sees Slaine’s Castle and gets a wave of déjà vu! She rents a house to continue her book. But as she writes she feels these are more like memories of a past …
Every Kearsley book I’ve read is better than the last. This is no exception. I had a hard time putting it down!
My favorite book from a favorite author. No overt sex scenes but romantic just the same. The historical details were authentic and the ending a surprise. I love this story.
All of her books are wonderful. You won’t be disappointed. Great read.
I loved everything about this book; the time periods, the location, the characters, the writing, the whole premise. An excellent read!
