History has all but forgotten…
In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth—the ultimate betrayal—that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

It’s been quite a while since I was sucked into the world of a book, but The Winter Sea drew me in completely. The storyline is unique, the world building excellent, and the main character so relatable. I highly recommend this book!
Suasanna Kearsley’s writing style is beautifully engaging. This book is about the Jacobite uprising in Scotland in the early 1700’s. Kearsley tells her story weaving together two timelines. One is current day; an author coming to Slains for research. The other timeline takes place at Slains three hundred years before.
Kearsley’s books are …
If you like time-travel concepts of medieval times and romance, definitely give this a shot! This author and I have a lot in common. 🙂
This question brought so many books to mind, since each book teaches me a little and changes me a little, or sometimes significantly. A book about Kayaking in Alaska discouraged me from attempting a planned kayak due to the vicious tides and unpredictable weather. Another book, (BelCanto), introduced me to wonderful fiction, and then there is Pat …
There is only one word that sums up my thoughts on this book ‘WOW’. THE WINTER SEA drew me in right from the start, I could not find out fast enough what happened next. This is a beautiful work of Historical Fiction with wonderful characters and a fabulous storyline. A heart-wrenching tale of love and happiness, an adventure of the past and the …
The Winter Sea is one of those once in a lifetime reads. A book that moved me like no other, that I’ll never forget. That I’ll reread for inspiration over and over again. The language is sheer poetry, the landscapes haunting. Underneath it all a quiet magic simmers, while true love wins the day. I highly recommend this read for those who crave …
Susanna Kearsley tops my list of go-to authors. I savor her books because I know a new one won’t be out again right away. She’s never failed to disappoint, and THE WINTER SEA is only one of many from her bookshelf I would recommend to readers.
This is the first book of Susanna Kearsley’s that I’ve read, and I’ll definitely be reading more. It was very readable, beautifully written, and really pulled me into the story and time period. I live in the part of Scotland she writes about, and she captures the area both today and in the uncertain times of the 18th century beautifully. A …
This book was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. At points it brought me to tears because you get so involved with the beautifully portrayed characters. The historical aspects were really interesting and the characters stay with you after the book is finished .
Great historical romance novel set during the first Jacobite rising in 1708 in Scotland. It had me checking the Internet to see the places she described. If you love Outlander you will love this too.
Loved it!! I’m a fan of historical fiction and I liked the way the author tied the story between the timelines with the plot twist at the end. I did not see that coming.
My number 1 fav, read and re-read abt 30 times.. excellent
A real page-turner! 5 stars

“For if there was no winter, we could never hope for spring.”
I’m speechless. I didn’t think I’d end up enjoying this book, but I became obsessed with the romance and history.
Carrie is a talented author working on her next novel. As she’s traveling around, she feels an odd pull towards the ruins of Slains Castle. A pull so strong, she stops …
Having read all of Susanna Kearsleys books, I would have to rate this as my favorite!
Powerful, engrossing, and wonderfully spectacular! In THE WINTER SEA, bestselling author Carrie McClelland departs her original plans to research her next book in France. Instead, she finds herself in Cruden Bay on the shores of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The cottage she lets is as fascinating as Slains Castle, a place with which she feels an …
