An oldy, but an amazing book. Not only a compelling character-driven novel, but a historical chronology of events leading up to the US getting into the war. Thru the lives of one family–the Henrys–the events and society’s attitude about them come to life on the page. One gets a great understanding of the world leaders–Hitler, Churchill, …

The Winds of War and it’s sequel, War and Remembrance, are the best fictional depiction of World War II, in my opinion. It’s not just military history; it’s also filled with human drama and emotions, great characters. I’d never realized before I read Wouk’s books just how exciting a description of a naval and air battle could be. I highly …

I found Herman Wouk’s “The Winds of War” to be a great book. It was an exciting read, with believable characters and I believe it was more or less historically true. I enjoyed reading a book that caused me to have to look up the meaning of a word occasionally. It stretched my mind!
Am now readin the second book of this pair, “War and Remembrance”

It is historically accurate, immensely addicting, and emotionally gripping. The author explores the immorality, pain and pragmatism of war as well as a very personal experience of the prejudice of the time and the …

It was a tough read – many characters, places and intertwined events. But, it truly was informative and historical while cast as a story.
I have now just undertaken War and Remembrance.

I read this book to learn more about the realities World War II, but still told from a fictional reference. Herman Wouk receives high credit from authorities on his accurate portrayal of historical events.
This book is VERY comprehensive. The forward relates that Wouk wanted to write this and War and Remembrance into one story. It took him 1000 …
