In an instant, everything fell apart.During an early morning rowing session with her fiancé, forensic geologist Raleigh Harmon discovers a shocking mystery under Seattle’s Lake Union. But when that discovery triggers an investigation, it threatens to destroy everything Raleigh’s worked so hard for. Her job. Her professional reputation. Even her recent engagement to Jack Stephanson. But that’s only … Stephanson.
But that’s only half the problem.
Raleigh’s mother is getting released from the state mental hospital, while her only solid rock—fairy-godmother Eleanor—suffers a turn for the worse. If that’s not enough, Raleigh’s wacky aunt gets her tangled into a convoluted case that stretches her patience.
Struggling to save both job and family…
With one last-ditch effort, Raleigh goes into near-exile at the northwest tip of Washington state—a haunting land of courage and pain where an ancient tribe conceals dark and disturbing secrets.
As the mysteries expand and time runs out, Raleigh realizes she’s in too deep—too deep to escape alive….

Once again, Sibella Giorello doesn’t disappoint with this installment in the Raleigh Harmon series. Giorello has hit her stride and keeps writing crisp, suspenseful tomes that mystery lovers can delight in. I loved tagging along for yet another adventure with Raleigh who finds herself smack dab in the middle of yet another murder investigation. This time her own freedom is at stake, and she somehow has to keep her wits while facing trouble at home too. The poetic descriptions are a Giorello trademark, and there’s some nice introspection mixed in with the action (though I always wish for a little more of this.) But then again, Raleigh wouldn’t be Raleigh if she didn’t run from her feelings as much as she runs from the bad guys. This one was worth the wait and will fit nicely into your murder mystery library.
Once again, Raleigh Harmon’s world is teetering on the brink of disaster with crazy family situations, a tension-filled romance with Jack, and her habit of making enemies in law enforcement. Using her forensic geology expertise, legwork, wits, and perseverance – or should I say, stubborn never-say-die attitude – she goes about investigating the mysterious murder of a young native American man.
Raleigh’s character gets under your skin, just like she does with pretty much everyone she meets along the journey. They either love her or hate her. She’s not someone you can just ignore. She’s too smart by far for the by-the-book cops who think following protocol is the only way, even if they have a backlog of cold cases and absolutely no clue. Raleigh always finds another way. A more dangerous way, and usually the path of greatest resistance, but she gets the job done. Even if it nearly kills her.
She might be from the south, but her lack of southern belle charm is one of the reasons I like her so much. She doesn’t mind getting dirty, she loves burgers, mayo with her fries, and fast cars. She hides her feelings from the people she cares about most, because that’s where her fear lies. Loving people and losing them. Saying I love you is much harder for her than hunting a killer.
Raleigh can be heroic one second and aggravating the next. Sometimes I’m cheering her on and other times I really want to yell at her. But whether I’m cheering or yelling, I’m still turning pages and devouring the story because Author Sibella Giorello is just that good.
Another wonderful suspense where Raleigh Harmon has to solve impossible mysteries while also juggling personal issues. She is tough and sensitive, persistent and caring, intelligent and intuitive, and never, ever gives up. This was a great book! All of the characters were vividly real, the descriptions were stunning, and the story was unpredictable from start to finish. This story ran the gamut from intense to hilarious to heart-pounding, and the ending was perfect!
Love the series, love the characters

I have been a huge fan of this series. If you’re looking for a good PI investigations book with an unexpected ending then this is for you. I went through this particular book thinking I knew exactly what happened then around 80% completion you realize how wrong you actually are. I would love to see this series continues but all good books come to an end… or do they?? Sibella has additional series with Raleigh at different points in her life and I look forward to diving into those as well.
