I was absolutely in love with this book. The story line pulls on your feelings, you are part of the story and you feel Amelia and Elena’s pain. But thankfully, there is a happy ending to the drama that is the book’s storyline. You will not put this down until you’ve completed it…..
For the first time in a while, I picked this book up and I couldn’t put it down! There Almere so many twists and turns throughout right up until the very end. I highly recommend reading this one!
This book is an excellent example of a situation that women all over the world experience…being a punching bag and not regarded as a human being with worth. I’m a retired psychologist and remember a case of a woman who repeatedly ended up in the E.R yet went back to her abuser. There is a wonderful surprise ending.
This book is divided into 3 parts essentially. (I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll be brief!) In the first section, the reader learns about Elena. Living in Australia, she returns home to Ireland when her mother passes away. During the funeral, she meets Nicholas and over time falls in love with him. Nicholas is grieving the loss of his wife who is believed to have drowned when her car slid into water. The second part details the relationship between Nicholas and his first wife Amelia, which leads up to the events surrounding her disappearance into the water. The final part is the resolution of the story.
There were some things that worked for me and some things that didn’t. I liked that the author focuses on women in abusive relationships and tries to make readers understand why they stay. It’s common for women who are abused to make excuses for their partner, blame themselves, tell themselves that their partner will change or is sorry for their actions, and lie to others about where the bruises on their bodies came from. The cycle of abuse is difficult to break and Elliot does a good job documenting the process in my opinion. I also liked the plot of the book. I think it’s a good story line filled with potential. On the other hand, I felt that the book was unnecessarily long in that section two is almost a retelling of section one, just with a different woman. Many of the things that happen to Elena, happened to Amelia. The women react to these events in a similar fashion for the most part (which bothered me to some extent). I also disliked Nicholas’s mother Yvonne! I think she was a necessary addition to the story and I think Elliot did a great job forming her character. She is the doting mother who can never see fault in her son, only in the women he falls in love with. Oh, but I couldn’t stand her! The final thing that fell short for me is what I believe was meant to be the twist. While I liked what she did, I wasn’t surprised by the revelation at all.
Not a bad book overall. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
This book was awesome.
