A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom.Nell Caldicott awaits the return of her violent sailor husband with trepidation, but for once her fears are not realised. Her husband’s ship, the Brig Minerva, has sunk off the Cornish coast. Nell is free, but her husband has left her with little money and many questions about his past. Gradually, as his secrets are laid bare, she … laid bare, she realises she didn’t know her husband at all. Can she uncover the truth? And can she ever learn to trust a man with her heart again?
Nathan Harbottle is on a quest to find his missing cousin, but the tragic wife of the Minerva’s captain attracts him more than he cares to admit. He wants to help, but he’s powerless to intervene. However, their lives are destined to collide in unexpected ways, and his resolve to be nothing more than a friend to the beautiful widow is sorely tested. Can he set aside his own past and convince her to take a chance on love?
This is a complete story with a HEA.

A perfectly plotted tale with a complex story. Touching and unconventional. I will be looking forward to reading more from this author!
I was hooked from the first page, I could not put this book down. I had to know what was going to happen next. AS I read, it was like a little movie playing in my mind’s eye. I have never been to York, but i felt like I was right there. Wonderful book
Can’t wait to read more of this series.
I almost give 5 stars before i read any of Mary Kingswood’s books. This one lives up to my expectations. They are not typical regency novels….they are SO much more.
This is one author whose books are never to be missed and this is no exception. The characters are intertwined with other books yet each story can be stand alone. Every character is complex and the plots enjoyable. Highly recommend.
Original story line. Showing some of a different style of life. Not just the drawing rooms of gentry.
I loved it. I read the series.
Started out slow read but was worth it in the end… good characters and afew tist and turns.
Bayonet Godney and his wife are horrible, not compassionate folks and deserve each other. An interesting account of a mans life.
I enjoyed the juxtaposition of finding a balance between Regency and modern ideals. The author does a great job, and I loved the characters.
A love story with many twists and turns. It will keep you hooked.
Well written, clean book. Interesting plot and interesting characters
I love reading this authors books!
The Widow ( silver linings #1) by Mary Kingswood is a historical romance mystery. Characters change and develop as the plot winds along. Descriptions of the times, locale and societal practices are nicely written. Answers to the questions about the missing heir are more involved than they seem. This was an enjoyable read.
So well written with a great story line, The Widow was a book I could not put down. Loved the characters and love how this series connects each book to one event although the characters do not always know each other from book to book. The Widow is the first in a series that will keep you spell bound.
Nell’s husband beats her and keeps her in poverty. A sea captain, Jude is gone for up to three weeks at a time but will be home soon. Then he is dead, drowned when his ship sank, and Nell is alone with her eight-year-old son Louis. So begins The Widow. We discover That Jude is not at all what or who he seems, and Nell doesn’t know what will happen with her life. This plot’s mystery Is intriguing, and the author slowly teases out information. Wonderful characters keep the book interesting; I highly recommend it.
I am on the fourth book in this series and I love the depth of character the author builds. the characters are human and believable. I also enjoy the way she has woven some of the same characters throughout the whole series of books. It is evident that as the books progress the author has gotten more creative with the story lines and keeps getting more intricate with the details and plots. She subtly weaves details together and it is enough to make you say hmm, but still keep you guessing.
I liked everything about this book except the abusive husband. I am glad that it started at the point of his being lost at sea. I determined the husband’s secret early on so it wasn’t that much of a mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed the second chance at love with an honorable man.
I enjoyed that this book was not in a rush to tell the story or develop the lovely characters.
An entertaining and intelligent Regency story of life, loss, and love without the usual over-the-top descriptions of steamy sexual encounters that make most Regency romances a poor excuse for literature.
