Fast paced story of Cat Campbell, weapon wielding healer of the Clan Campbell…also an original member of the Highland Rose school and Nathaniel Worthington Viscount of Lincolnshire, the brother of Evelyn (book 1) and Scarlet (book 2).
Back in book 2 Cat saved and made quite a mark on Queen Catherine. Now the Queen is once again in trouble. Someone or many are poisoning King Charles I and she needs a Highland Rose skilled in healing and weaponry/defence. The best is Catriona Campbell. She agrees to go knowing her life will be in danger. Nathaniel agrees to escort her to his England home and from there Evie and Scar’s housekeeper (the most proper woman in manners) Jane Pickney who will whip Cat into a proper “English” lady. Yeah Right!!! Their journey is full of mishaps and the attraction to each others cause so much strain, you just want them to kiss already. Nathaniel falls in love with Cat but has a major secret which prevents him from marrying Cat and Cat has sworn never to marry. Now once in the Palace the intrigue/mystery of who poisoned the king and who is out to get the Queen begins. Cat will ferret out the conspiracy but along the way must overcome her attraction to Nathaniel. What doesn’t help is the fact he is willing to risk everything to keep her. Once up against the murderers can the two fight the evil and protect the Queen (and themselves)…
Another fabulous tale from Heather McCollum. I love her quirky secondary characters…Jane was a BIG Hoot!!! Love her. Her descriptive writing makes you feel you are back in time. Her knack for historical details is amazing. You will love this Campbell story!!!

Cat (Catriona) Campbell is well aware of the Englishman, Nathaniel Worthington. They even shared a scorching kiss when he was delirious with fevers from a gunshot wound (previous book) – but he probably doesn’t even remember it. Cat has been part of The Highland Roses School since it began. She’s strong, intelligent and totally self-reliant, and she will never, ever fall in love – she’s seen what that does to a woman, and she wants no part of it.
Nathaniel Worthington, Viscount Worthington, is out in the forest looking for the vexing, intoxicating and forbidden Cat Campbell. He has been sent to bring Cat back to Finlarig Castle where they have just received a missive from Queen Catherine. The Queen explains that King Charles is suddenly very ill and she believes he has been poisoned. She wants Nathaniel to escort Cat to London because she needs a healer as well as someone who can find the traitors involved if he has been poisoned.
On the trip south, they become closer even though each is fighting the attraction. Cat has no intention of falling in love and Nathaniel isn’t free to marry as he pleases because of his nasty father’s will. He might risk it if it was only him, but it would affect his sisters as well, so he’ll have to follow the terms of the will. As we all know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and they both had intentions of being good – they just hadn’t reckoned with the strong attraction they feel for each other.
Along the way, they learn that King Charles actually died before the missive requesting them even reached Scotland. They continue on to London and find that the tensions are high and there is even more intrigue, deceit, lies, and treason. Can they ferret out the traitors? When everybody’s secrets – including Nathaniel’s – are revealed, can either of them survive? Will they be the ones to end up being labeled as traitors?
This was a fast-paced book and I enjoyed the story – but I don’t think I’d read it again. There were Title errors and other minor historical inaccuracies that I found distracting. For instance – they drank bourbon and played Whist before either was invented. The things that were wrong were so very easy to research that I can’t, in my own mind, make excuses for the author getting them wrong. And titles, address, etc, there is just no excuse for getting those wrong – they haven’t changed in hundreds of years. Learn them once and you have them for every book you write. Another thing that would keep me from reading it again is that I didn’t care for the resolution. I can’t tell you much more than that because of spoiling the story, but let’s just say that I thought Nathaniel lost too much and that a King and Queen could have certainly come up with a better solution than they did. Which reminds me – a King who has been managing court intrigue and deceit all of his life suddenly becomes stupid? I don’t buy that he would have reacted as he did to Nathaniel. Then, it appears that the main villains got away with no punishment. I don’t know – just not a satisfying end to me. Maybe we’ll learn, in the next book, that all has gone well for Nathaniel and that the villains got punished.
So, the bottom line is – It was a nice story and I really liked Nathaniel and Cat – I’m glad I read it, but wouldn’t read it a second time.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cat Campbell is a Scottish lass through and through with special healing knowledge. She’s also a Rose which means she can fight her way out of any skirmish. But when she receives a plea from Queen Catherine for help, she’ll need more than her weapons to keep her enemies at bay. She’ll need to hold onto her heart for her escort is none other than the wickedly handsome Englishman Nathaniel Worthington, Viscount of Lincolnshire. Once they reach London, the closeness she feels with Nathaniel flees and he acts like he’s got a stick up his bum. Women hang onto his frame and Cat seethes with jealousy. Can she transform herself into a lady and uncover the villain behind the poisoning or has she just put her own life in peril? If only Nathaniel would return to being her very own wicked viscount.
The Wicked Viscount was an absolute pleasure to read. Not only does it have an independent heroine who speaks her mind but it’s a feast for any historical reader. Descriptive narration thrust be back in time and I experienced every nuance of the story, from the clothing to the jockeying for position at court. The romance between Cat and Nathaniel was slow then burst into flame. The conflict growing in Nathaniel was honest and well-drawn out. The intrigue of who was responsible for the poisoning kept me on the edge of my seat. The ending made me swoon with happiness.
If you’re looking for a sweeping historical romance where opposites attract, pick up The Wicked Viscount today. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

My Rating: 5+ stars
I just finished reading this book and I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed it!! If I was to be a woman from that era, I would want to be just like Cat Campbell….fiercely independent, knows how to take care of herself, is lethal with her weapons and speaks her mind and she even sleeps in trees! Although she’s got a very sad past, it’s made her into a strong woman and I just love her to bits, what a character she is and she had me laughing out loud at some of the things she’d say! lol As for Nathaniel Worthington, Viscount of Lincolnshire, well, you can’t help but fall in love with him as well, he’s everything a hero should be!!
From the hills of Scotland to the Royal court in London, their story is filled with passion, treason, danger, murder, secrets, etc…..everything you would want in a historical romance. Heather McCollum is one of my favorite authors and it’s no wonder, with stories like this one that she writes!!
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Yay!! I was waiting on these two..I have to say Heather has become one of my grab as soon as it comes out author.. I hope you started from the very beginning of the series because you really need to to know who is how and how they affect the storyline. So we meet both Nathanial and Cat from the very beginning and they have a history of not liking each other. Cat is a scottish lass and hates the English for oh so many reasons and as you read the series you can understand her feeling. I loved Nate and couldn’t wait for his story since I loved his sisters, I have to say that my favorite couple is still Scarlett and Aiden…My only issue was that we barely got to read about those two I kind of wanted to catch up with them a little bit more, but regardless this story is good..We have more secrets and issues with the court folks, since Cat and Nate had to go help the queen after being summoned and Cat represented the Rose’s and you knew that would not have gone too well..I wont give you more just grab a copy and Enjoy!!
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions
Catriona Campbell has plenty of unfinished business with Lord Nathaniel Worthington, Viscount of Lincolnshire. He’s always lingering around the Highland Roses School where his sisters instruct women in literacy, along with self defense, which Cat helps teach. All her lethality hasn’t prepared Cat for the kiss she shared with Nathaniel months past when she healed him from a gunshot wound and now she still can’t forget him.
Despite his attraction, Nathaniel knows he should stay away from the fiery Cat. Per the stipulations of his cruel father’s will, Nathaniel must marry a lady from a noble and influential family in order to protect his inheritance for himself and more importantly, his sisters.
But when an urgent letter from Queen Catherine necessitates Cat’s immediate departure for London, Nathaniel offers to escort her. The close quarters of the long journey, without anyone to serve as a buffer between them, ignite the sparks that have been kindling between them for months. But Nathaniel has secrets that could see them both burned, especially with the treacherous atmosphere they encounter at court, a threat to their lives as much as to any hopes they may have for a future together.
With a father who loved drinking and warring until battle killed him and a mother driven to the grave by her own grief, Cat is used to independence. She’s had to care for herself and her younger sister and is now determined to never marry or succumb to love and the weakness she feels it brings. Nathaniel will make his sisters destitute if he follows his true desires but rapidly finds his priorities shifting.
Like its predecessor in the series, this book has intrigue and some vile villains but I enjoyed it a bit more for not being quite as stress inducing. I loved that Cat was so strong and yet still willing to be vulnerable and even with that willingness to open up, her strength was never in doubt. I loved how much Nathaniel grew and changed and how he was willing to give up everything to be with Cat.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have to really read many historical romances especially any with a political twist like this one. This was book 3 in the series so some of the prior events didn’t connect for me they were mentioned a few times. Cat is one of the best highland roses and has been called to go to London to solve the mystery of the king being poisoned. This adventure takes her from Scotland to London with Nathaniel who she pines for and dispute her stubborn cold heart she want to be with him. Having his own family problems Nathaniel as some secrets and obligations that will try to keep them apart. The fire burning between them is all consuming and they can’t help but fall in love but when the secretes come to light it could be enough to ruin a budding love. Used to being armed with her blades Cat must play a proper lady and use her words to find the traitors. Wonderful written, the story really draws you in. It was hard to put down and was a pleasure to read I give it four stars. By Tiffany
The Wicked Viscount
The Campbells book 3
by Heather McCollum
This was another fascinating read by the very talented Heather McCollum! I enjoyed Cat and Nathaniel she’s a feisty Scottish Lass that knows how to hold her own in any situation and wields her weapon better than any man. On the way to London to aid the queen Cat hits it off with Nathaniel and sparks fly. But when they reach their destination he turns into someone else and with all the Intrique at court and the simpering misses flicking around him, well Cat just lets the feisty Scott in her out. And things get kicked up a notch.
Truly an enjoyable story with plenty of slowburn sizzle a kickass heroine and a very honourable man, these two were made for each other. Lots of political intrigue plenty of villains, witty dialogue and action with a very surprising ending. You will not be disappointed.
I recieved a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

The Scottish Highlands and England 1685
Cat Campbell being such an amazing warrior and healer, is asked by Catherine de Braganza of House Braganza, Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland, to come help her ailing husband King Charles II. The English Queen fears he may of been poisoned. In addition she knows Cat is strong, trustworthy plus and a talented healer.
Nathaniel Worthington, 5th Viscount of Lincolnshire, has not been able to get Cat off his mind since they shared a passionate kiss last year. As she never left his side when she cared for him when he had been badly injured from a gunshot. Though neither mention it neither forgets it. Now after the time Nathaniel has spent in Scotland, he realizes being a Viscount, part of Parliament and House of Lords is not what he wants anymore. As the English, wealthy, women, only want him for his wealth, title and lands. His father is still pulling his strings from the grave. His father’s solicitor is harassing him to pick a wife. This means an English heiress or one that will help his political career. If not he will love everything but his title Nathaniel doesn’t care about politics, titles and home but no money or position anymore would make his sisters penniless too.
As a Scottish redheaded spit fire who screams like a banshee, wears trousers under her skirts, this includes knives, hair picks and sharps weapons under her skirts. She cares and loves her little fourteen year old mute sister who she will do anything for. A lass who always hated everything English blaming them for both her parents deaths.
Nathaniel volunteers to escort Cat, for a number of reasons, but mostly because he wants to protect her from the viscous English court. The women use their evil tongues to ruin others. Many men behave like animals and women and are will not accept no as a woman’s answer to a woman’s body. Both will put lower class citizens in deadly situations just to get ahead and what they desire with no remorse. It doesn’t matter if they are a poor starving orphan child or adult . Nathaniel is ashamed that he was once apart of this world. A year ago he would of married any of these users but now he needed to find a way out. Yet it didn’t seem like there was any without hurting his sisters. Plus he had a big secret that Cat might despise him for if he reveals the truth. He knows he has to tell her before she hears it from someone else. Plus Cat did not want to ever be married nor does she believe in love with a man. Seeing how horribly her father treated her mother and her mother lived in deep depression and misery before her horrible death! Both she and her sister we very much ignored. Now Nathaniel was making her feel things for the first time. Could this be love? As both of then never experienced this emotion on a passion level before only love for their siblings.
There here are spies, murderers, espionage and traitors at every turn. Who is your friend and who is your foe? Plus no one wants this low class Scottish beauty with this English Viscount. Do they even have a fighting chance of having relationship that could last forever?
A fast paced, action packed, page turning riveting adventure, from start to finish. This includes all the elements historical romance readers love with suspense, treachery, mystery, murder, hatred, assault, secrets, betrayal defense, healing, trust, joy and love.
The setting was magnificent , dialogue was amazing, the plots within plots was awe-inspiring. The characters were just both phenomenal and brilliant even the secondary characters like the child Mouse warmed my heart. A beautifully written book that drew me in where I never wanted to leave. This unforgettable story is definitely one for the keeper shelf to read again.

Happy Release Day Heather!

Nathaniel knows he should keep his distance from Cat, but when an urgent letter from Queen Catherine calls her to London, he knows he has to escort her.
Another well written page turning book from the author, this is the third book in the series & whilst it could easily be read on its own I’d recommend reading the whole series especially if like me you love series. Nathaniel & Cat have featured in earlier books & the attraction between them has been apparent from the start. A long journey to London is filled with sexual tension as the pair verbally spar until sparks fly. The characterisation is very good & several intriguing & delightful new characters are introduced. The pace of the book is good but towards the end the pace increases until the pages flew by. My only quibble was that a villain didn’t get their comeuppance so I hope this happens in a future book as I’d hate for them not to suffer!

The Wicked Viscount by Heather McCollum
The Campbells #3
Nathaniel Worthington, brother to the women who set up the Highland Roses School in Scotland, is healed from his gunshot wound and escorting Cat Campbell to London at the bequest of the king’s wife. The story deals with their travel to London, finding out that the king has died, dealing with traitors, saving a few people and of course, falling in love. Cat and Nathaniel did not set out to find romance but it seemed to find them in spite of the fact that Cat is definitely not the woman Nathaniel should marry as she is not titled and English and she is unwilling to relinquish her heart to any man after seeing what pain love can bring someone who loses their spouse.
This was a fun easy read that had historical basis (with the king’s death) and though perhaps not entirely believable an enjoyable way to spend the day.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled-Amara for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
The Wicked Viscount by Heather McCollum is book 3 in The Campbells Series / Highland Roses School Series. This is the story of Nathaniel Worthington, fifth Viscount of Lincolnshire and Catriona ‘Cat’ Campbell. I have read the previous books, but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Cat is a very good healer, a strong women who knows how to defend herself, takes care of a younger sister, but with Nathaniel she seems to be at a loss about him. Cat had taken care of Nathaniel a few months ago when he was hurt and while doing so they shared a passionate kiss. Which neither talk about but it burns in their minds. Nathaniel is around Finlairg Castle where his sister helps trains women in defense in her Highland Rose School. But he has to marry well to be able to keep all that he has which in turns is protection for is siblings. But his growing feelings for Cat is making things hard to focus on what he should be seeking. When Cat is asked by the Queen to come help the King who is deathly ill and foul play is suspected, Nathaniel goes forward to escort her their safely, which leads to more interactions that just builds more into their desire for each other.
Become immersed in history with a romantic adventure as Heather McCollum tells another enthralling story with her amazing descriptions and characters that draw you in from the start! Cat, a scottish lass knowing she will not trust love after a bad childhood, is at Finlairg Castle at the school that teaches women to defend themselves as well as many other skills. Known as a healer she is called to the Queen in London and ends up being escorted by Englishman Nathaniel Worthington, who’s sister runs the school.
Having shared a fiery kiss over a year ago, he knows it will be hard to keep his distance on the journey. Of course their attraction is combustible and hard to deny. But there is a lot at stake with the many secrets and all of the intrigue of court.
Will these two be able to find love and happiness or be denied due to what the secrets reveal? I truly love everything this author pens and she is on my forever read list! So so not miss this amazing tale that will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can!!
Viscount Nathaniel Worthington has been in the highlands of Scotland visiting with his sisters. They opened a school for young ladies that is very different from most. Now though, he has been summoned to London and asked to bring a healer with him.
Cat Campbell is just about the wildest of the “Highland Roses” . She has had a lot of heartache in her life and has learned the hard way to rely only on herself. She is a gifted healer who knows how to protect herself and her friends.
Our mismatched duo, an English Lord and a Scottish peasant , have a dangerous and complicated adventure ahead of them. The journey from the highlands is not half as dangerous as the Royal court in London.
I was awake reading until 2:30am because I couldn’t put it down.
It is part of a series. Although you could read it on it’s own I would recommend reading the series in order to really understand our characters.
I loved it.
The Wicked Viscount is book three in the Campbell’s series and the first book I have read by this author. It was well written and grabbed the reader’s attention from the beginning. The characters were great! Cat was an orphan, who was strong and could take care of herself. She was a student of the Highland Rose School where they taught females to read, write and hand-to-hand combat. She was also a healer and is requested by Queen Catherine to go to London. Nathaniel’s sisters started the school and he accompanied them to Scotland. He is an English aristocrat and a member of the court. Cat doesn’t like the English, because her father was killed in a battle with the English. But she is attracted to Nathaniel and as they traveled toward England, she comes to like him more. The book is full of sadness, mystery, political intrigue, murder, and romance. The plot was great and the book was fast paced. I will definitely have to go back and read the first two books!
Stunning conclusion to this series!
I loved the first two standalones in this interconnected series as Evelyn and Scarlet found their fierce Highlanders. Now, it’s their brother Nathaniel’s turn and his intense and conflicted romance with Cat is everything I hoped it would be. Non-stop action and intrigue, witty and intelligent wordplay, and an HEA that will make you stand up and cheer.
The attention to detail is incomparable as we’re transported to a Scotland of more than 300 years ago. It’s clear that the author has done her due diligence regarding the history and culture, making this a beautiful escape that will warm your heart long after you find your way back to the present. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
It was good to be back with the Highland Roses. Cat is a favorite character because she is fierce and unvarnished. She is the total opposite of Nathaniel who is the polished aristocrat. Sparks have been flying around them from the moment they met. Their story is especially filled with politics and intrigue. Cat is in the thick of saving the day and saving herself. Throughout it all she and Nathaniel heat up the sheets and build a strong and unshakable bond.
3.5 Stars
“As long as blood courses through my body, my heart will never leave you.”
Cat Campbell has made the wilds of the Highlands her home. Cat has been caring for her younger sister since the death of their parents. When two English ladies open the doors of Finlarig Castle to the women in the area, Cat is at first skeptical. But when she sees the ladies are providing food, shelter, and teaching the girls more than just reading and writing but also the art of self-defense, Cat and her sister join the Highland Roses. Blessed with the art of healing, Cat quickly learns more of her craft as well as becoming one of the most respected students of the Roses. When the Queen summons for one of the Highland Roses to assist her at Court, it is no surprise that Cat is the one chosen to answer her request.
Nathaniel Worthington, the Fifth Viscount of Lincolnshire, has been funding his sisters Highland Rose school, and secretly yearning for a particular Rose. When Cat is summoned to Court, Nathaniel offers to assist her in her travels as well as maneuvering the many intrigues within the hierarchy of the prominent families at Court.
As the mystery of who plotted and succeeded in poisoning the King unfold, so too does the budding attraction between one very wicked Viscount and his Highland Rose.
The Wicked Viscount is the third in the Campbell series, and while it states can be read alone, I would not suggest doing so. I absolutely loved the first two books in this series. And while this was well written and an entertaining read, I missed the Highland backdrop as well as all the Highland Roses, the sisters and their husbands. Cat and Nathaniel’s romance is slow to kindle but quick to burn…and burn verra hawt! Overall, The Wicked Viscount would be enjoyed by fans of historical romance.

Catriona “Cat” Campbell is called to London by Queen Catherine, her husband King Charles II is deathly ill and the queen suspects foul play. Nathaniel Worthington, Viscount Worthington is tasked with taking her to London, Nathaniel dreads the task, he is intrigued by Cat and still remembers the kiss they shared months ago, but Nathaniel is not free to follow his heart. His father’s will is iron-clad and Nathaniel will lose everything (and by extension so will his sisters) if he does not marry a woman of refinement and noble family.
The set out to London and they really begin to know each other, Cat has sworn to never love after seeing her mother wither away after losing her father, and she especially won’t love an Englishman after her father was slain by the English in the battle of Bothwell Bridge. But the more time spent with Nathaniel, the harder it is for her to hold to that vow. But Nathaniel has secrets that would destroy that budding tenderness if she ever learned of them. When they finally reach his estate, they learn that the king is dead and his brother James is now king. Nathaniel is confronted by some of his father’s cronies and is pressured to choose a side. Cat is saddened to see Nathaniel sliding back into his formal English manners and wonders who the real Nathaniel is. In an effort to find the Nathaniel she is coming to love, she gives into the passion between them, refusing to let him share his secrets.
They make their way to London and Cat is thrown headfirst into the intrigues of court life, where secrets, betrayal, deceit and lies threaten to tear our lovers apart, especially when Nathaniel’s secrets are revealed. With accusations of treason and murder being thrown around and betrayal running rampant, will they find a way to happily ever after? Or will the guilt and anger festering inside tear them apart forever?
I thought this was a good read, but not something I would read again. I liked both Nathaniel and Cat, and while this was an interesting story, the book had a lot going on, so much that the “romance” seemed to be secondary. That along with the numerous title errors and slight historical errors regarding minor things (like bourbon and whist), made this a 3.5 star read for me. I rounded it up to four, because I did enjoy the story and thought the author did a good job overcoming the things keeping them apart with a plausible solution.
This is the third book in the series and does reference several events from the previous books, but I believe it could be read as a stand alone title nonetheless.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to be from NetGalley and the publisher.*
I do not know if was just the day of the week because I usually love highland stories. This story was way to slow for me. The writing is good and the history is interesting but I needed more action and romance in the story. I got it, but at about the 70% mark. Then I really dug my teeth into the story. I love the intrigue in the courts and how the women (and men) maneuvered around each other.
