Can her enemy melt her cold heart? Lady Anna Gaunt comes to Blackhaven on a government commission – to free a French prisoner of war, thought to be Napoleon’s spymaster, Colonel Delon, and learn his secrets. But Anna has to find him first, for the enterprising prisoner has freed himself and clearly has an agenda of his own to be played out in Blackhaven. Louis, betrayed, vengeful, and yet … vengeful, and yet stubbornly loyal, is an enigma. He seems more interested in Anna’s personal secrets than those of his own country, and their war of words and information quickly becomes one of seduction.
But with the stakes so high, neither can afford to lose. Distractions such as highway robbery, elopement, and mysterious secret meetings can only unite them for a short time. For love is surely their common enemy, and any lasting relationship impossible.…
The Blackhaven Brides series can be enjoyed in any order, but the chronological order is:
The Wicked Baron
The Wicked Lady
The Wicked Rebel
The Wicked Husband
The Wicked Marquess
The Wicked Governess
The Wicked Spy

Love this entire series!
I loved The Wicked Spy & I have loved all the others in this series – Mary Lancaster is a wizard with words & captivates her readers so they are living the story along with the cast of characters. Lady Anna Gaunt comes to Blackhaven after being brought in by her brother-in-law on a government commission to find French spy Colonel Delon & free him from prison, as he is supposed to be a spymaster for Napoleon. Both Anna & Louis have suspicions about one another & hope to gain information regarding the war between their 2 countries. Needless to say, they are on opposites sides but can the put their differences aside & strive toward a common goal for not only their countries but also for the love they are feeling for one another. This is a stand alone but if you decide to read the series,it would be good to read them in order of publication as you do see some of the characters appear in subsequent books. Another winner from Mary Lancaster & I am already looking forward to Book 8!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of two people, Lady Anna and Louis, or Colonel Deleon, who are pulled together by the events of their time involving the war between England and Napoleon’s France. Each character has had a great share of tragedy in their own personal history, enough to harden them to others around them, and yet they have a strange pull to each other. The two are on opposite sides of this war, and are both engaged in outlying intrigue in the small village of Blackhaven, which is always filled with colorful characters and events, as this is the seventh book in a series that takes place in this setting.
The two give meaning to the expression “ frenemies”, as each is working to solve a mystery that has an outcome that could greatly affect their homelands. While unraveling this quandary, their attraction becomes more than mere lust, as they find themselves needing each other for more than information.
This is a really interesting tale and a fun read which I recommend for romance readers who enjoy stories with mystery and danger along with their hea.
This was a very enjoyable book in the Blackhaven Brides series’; it’s like going on vacation to a little town by the seaside, a place where you have been before and you know a lot of the people. This book is #7 in the series and Louis and Anna’s story kept me turning the pages until it was all read. Anna has been sent to Blackhaven by her twin sisters husband Henry, to investigate the escape of a French prisoner, Find him and try and turn him to help the English against the war with France. Anna meets the escaped spy and he is injured she tends his wound and makes plans to meet up with him the next day. Well things don’t exactly go the way she thinks for Louis has other plans to find the man who had betrayed him, and seek revenge for those who lost their lives because of that betrayal. The story has a lot of Characters from the town of Blackhaven you will recognize from other books in the series. The book is very well written and Louis and Anna’s journey as they fall in love has many twists and turns. Anna has some serious things that happened to her when she was young, and Louis is the only person she can stand to touch her. Love grows between this couple, and it is fun to follow them as they go on their journey to a happy ending. So if you like some mystery, and spies in your books, this one is for you. There is a lot more going on in the story but no spoilers from me you will have to get the book to find out for yourselves. Thank you Mary Lancaster for another great read.
I could not wait to read this story and see what adventure Mary Lancaster had in store for another installment of her Blackhaven Brides series. I was not disappointed, and although there is a connection to different characters in previous books, each can be read as a stand alone. What do you get when you put two spies together? Lady Anna Gaunt is on a mission to find and free a French prisoner of war and find out his secrets. But Louis, Colonel Delon has already freed himself and although wounded, he is on a mission of his own. As he and Anna meet in the woods, she is not sure who he is but he is out to find the men who betrayed him. Full of secrets, betrayal and a mystery, the two try to find their way as a romance blooms between them. Can Anna trust again after she has been hurt before and can Louis trust her to not betray him?
In her exciting style of writing and the mystery which unfolds, Mary does it again. Cannot wait for more of these stories and hope to see a few other characters come to life!
Anna Gaunt had secrets, many secrets. She was loath to touch anyone, suffered to shake hands only. Colonel Louis Delon was a spy, hiding in a prison and has taken the identity of a dead man. Anna has become very cold and calculating for such a young woman. When she has a chance meeting with an escaped prisoner, she is intrigued in thinking he might be Delon. The story takes many twists and turns to the secretive negotiations trying to end the was between England and France. This is a great story!! It ties into the previous stories but is a standalone read. Mary Lancaster is an author you will LOVE!!!
Anna was an independent, reckless, wild girl who hides behind a shell she’s constructed to keep her from getting emotionally hurt again. Lewis, not his true name is an injured escaped French prisoner, and the first man who amazingly enough, didn’t make her recoil in fear. If you remember Henry from a precious book, he is Anna’s brother in law, husband of her sister Christianne. Anna often worked with Henry.
Lewis, the escaped French prisoner, met Anna in the woods. She had her suspicions, but who was he really. The French escapee, had been betrayed by his own men during the Revolution in France in a quest for more power and position.
Banion was relatively new to Blackhaven so no one really knew who he was or if he was there for the healing waters or who he really was, other than a pest to Anna.
As with all of Mary Lancaster’s books, there is always a mystery to solve, betrayal to conquer, trust to build, and romance to bloom.
The Wicked Spy also takes place in Blackhaven where the other books in this series are set. I like that there is a carry over of several of the characters from the previous novels. This book is easy to recommend to 18 and older. The sex is more implied rather than being graphically explained in detail. Whenever this series ends, I’m going to be so disappointed since I feel like I’ve become to know the town and many of the people who live that. Characters are very well developed and extremely likeable in an intriguing sort of way.
So much intrigue in Blackhaven! Louis and Anna are enemies and it is Anna’s job to convince Louis over to her side and to give up his secrets. There is a lot to follow in this book but Mary makes it easy. This is a stand alone book but it does help if you read some of the others in the series so you can get a better understanding of who is who. I really enjoyed this book and Anna and Louis’s unconventional story. I definitely recommend this book!
