NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jane Hawk—fiction’s most relentless, resourceful, stunning new heroine—continues her battle against a murderous conspiracy in the riveting sequel to The Silent Corner. “No time to delay. Do what you were born to do. Fame will be yours when you do this.” These are the words that ring in the mind of mild-mannered, beloved schoolteacher Cora Gundersun—just before she … beloved schoolteacher Cora Gundersun—just before she takes her own life, and many others’, in a shocking act of carnage. When the disturbing contents of her secret journal are discovered, it seems certain that she must have been insane. But Jane Hawk knows better.

Don’t miss any of Dean Koontz’s gripping Jane Hawk thrillers:
THE SILENT CORNER • THE WHISPERING ROOM • THE CROOKED STAIRCASE • THE FORBIDDEN DOOR • THE NIGHT WINDOW
Praise for The Whispering Room
“Koontz has never exactly shied away from complex characters or situations. And this situation gets very complex indeed, as Jane pursues the people behind the conspiracy with the kind of single-minded relentlessness that makes the book absolutely spellbinding. As good as The Silent Corner was, this one’s even better. . . . Koontz is on another roll with a new series that boasts a juicy premise and a compelling star. . . . Pure gold.”—Booklist (starred review)
“A deeply layered, satisfying thriller that is character-driven and nearly impossible to put down . . . grounded in many real-world, current issues . . . [The Whispering Room] never loses sight of the classic political/sci-fi/thriller elements that make it so much fun to read.”—Bookreporter

The Whispering Room is the second book in Dean Koontz’s Jane Hawk series and I’m hooked. FBI agent Jane Hawk has gone rogue after her husband’s death. When Cora Gundersun, a school teacher, takes her own life everyone thinks she had gone insane. Jane Hawk follows the trail of a ruthless group set on changing the future of the nation. The story is dark, scary, disturbing, and a wonderful read.
This book and series is beautifully written and action packed. Koontz just keeps continuously raising his game and surprising me with his books. Some passages were simply poetic and make you think of the world in a fresh new way. Highly recommended.
Jane Hawk continues her vendetta against those who would change the planet. World power is in the balance and its worse than you think – nobody even realizes it! There are powerful players at large, and they do not have too many scruples!
The second installment of the Jane Hawk series doe not disappoint! A page turner until the very end. It’s part crime thriller, part government conspiracy and part action all rolled into one. Rarely are sequels as good as the original but this series proves that wrong, can’t wait to read the next book in this 5 book series! If you are a fan of Koontz it’s a must read, his best series yet!
I had been waiting to find out what happened to Jane Hawk. Good read. Jane wins the battle, but not sure about the war.
Why had I never read Dean Koontz’s work prior to The Silent Corner? I have no answer, but I am definitely a fan now. The Silent Corner was so intriguing and action-packed that I couldn’t put it down & eagerly devoured The Whispering Room in the same way. Jane Hawk, the protagonist in both, is a complex, complicated character who is determined to avenge the tragic death of her husband and save her young son. She is highly trained, intelligent, resourceful, and creative. Koontz’s prose is eloquent, beautifully descriptive, and highly evocative. I found myself rereading certain passages just to savor his descriptions of times and places. I certainly hope that he is hard at work on the next installment in this series because I am eager to experience another Jane Hawk adventure.
Thanks to Net Galley for an Advance Reader’s Copy of the book.

“You’re dead already… They’ll all know about you in the whispering room.”

I just LOVE this series! I reviewed the first book – The Silent Corner – earlier this year and was so intrigued by Jane Hawk and the evil she is battling that I could not wait for the next installment… In this, the second, Jane is still on the run, still facing untold and nearly unimaginable horrors. Well, nearly unimaginable until you start *really* thinking about the pervasive nature of technology – then they become altogether TOO imaginable, which makes them even more horrific. The investigative aspects of this story are engaging. As Jane teases out the ever-increasingly widespread reach of this conspiracy, the elements slowly come together and apart with a subtle tension that is delectable. The characterization in this installment is really great. As Jane journeys across the country and over and through the devastation that opens the book, she discovers not only layers of evil scattered throughout, but also bright spots of hope in the form of a truly extraordinary supporting cast that renews my faith in humanity. The people who dance into and out of Jane’s path are such polar opposites – the magnificently evil and phenomenally good are sprinkled in the most unlikely places, and discovering them and teasing out which are which is a very enjoyable part of the reading.
I’ve read other reviews of this book that criticize it for not having the shock value and non-stop action of the first book. That is a true issue, but I don’t think there was really any way to avoid it. This is a living, breathing plot – a lot of this second book lays out the next steps on Jane’s journey against D.J. Michael and his (for lack of a better term) cabal, and by definition the next steps in any journey are never as novel as the first… Still, Koontz manages to blend in plenty of interesting character development in this one and that helped me over some of the bits that would have otherwise seemed slower in pace and activity. The plot is thickening, and like anything that thickens, the process takes time. I have the patience to wait it out, because I have no doubt that the result will be utterly worth the wait. I’ve seen mention of at least two more Jane Hawk books in the works, and I look forward to both!
My review copy was provided by NetGalley. The Whispering Room will release on November 21, 2017.
(Thank you NetGalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read and review this book)
The Whispering Room by Dean Koontz is the second in the thrilling Jane Hawk series. I loved it! There is never a good place to stop reading until you finish the book. Although the book is part of a series, it is very good as a stand-alone thriller. Jane was an FBI agent with the Critical Incident Response Group which was often assigned to work cases with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Units. She dealt mostly with the cases which required fast action due to mass murders or seral killers. But now Jane is considered a rogue agent. She had killed three men in self-defense because she knew too much about powerful people with an evil agenda.
If you have read the preceding book about Jane in The Silent Corner, then you already have an idea of Jane’s plans for bringing to justice the people who were responsible for Nick’s death. Jane is fearless, almost. Her only fear is for the safety of her beloved son, Travis. He is all she has left and she will do anything and stop at nothing to expose the dangers of what D. J. Michael has set in motion.
The story opens with an innocent Cora Gundersun preparing to start her day with her little Dachshund, Dixie Belle. But the reader soon knows that all is not well with Cora. A malevolent presence seems to have control of Cora’s thoughts and actions. What could cause this? Read and tremble!
I won’t post spoilers, but this is another wonderful book by one of my favorite authors. This series does not have the eerie paranormal underlying presence, but it does have a theme which is even more frightening. The possibilities of our modern Nano-technology with mind altering results. Is it science fiction or on the edge of reality? Consider everything you have read about the growing percentage of personality disorders among society today as you read this book.
This book is filled with various characters which add differing levels of fear, anguish, anger, compassion, and unlikely allies. And the eighth floor… will Jane manage to survive?
I liked the Jane Hawk books overall, and the premise was a bit sci-fi (which I don’t noormally read). However, there was an awful lot of time where sub characters spent grandisizing themselves. I felt this was so much so that it took away form the book overall.
I love the Jane Hawk (main character) series! I don’t think I’ve ever plowed through books faster to find out what happens! I would read them in order.
I don’t know how Koontz does it, but he creates a great story, weaves characters in and out and keeps you enthralled. The premise of the series is a bit to close to reality – or what could happen in the future – that it’s scary.
The entire Jane Hawk series created a world that seems totally possible – and terrifying – with current technology. Hawk is, of course, brilliant, beautiful and resourceful – but she still feels down to earth, and you feel her angst about trying to protect her child while trying to save the world from rich evil manipulating megalomaniacs. The Whispering Room is the book in the series that reveals the true horror of what’s happening, and it’s classic Dean Koontz creepy.
Koontz is one of the best scary story writers, love his books!
Even better than the first book in the series! I devoured this one and moved on to The Crooked Staircase. More on that later…
If you want to go on an adventure with a bad-ass rogue FBI agent, this is the series for you.
After the first book, The Silent Corner, I didn’t know if I could fully invest in the character, Jane Hawk, who had been a “by the book” FBI agent gone rogue. Her character didn’t seem to have the angst or remorse about going against her morals and training that I personally thought she should have. However, the further I get into the series, I’m seeing more of the “old Jane” come through, and I like what I read.
I love Koontz’s way of delivering a story with a twisted kind of plot–one so outrageous it can’t possibly be real…or is it? He incorporates just enough probability to keep it on the edge of possible. And the way the world is shifting…who knows? I’m in awe of Mr. Koontz’s imagination, and the nearly implausible ideas he comes up with.
I’ve started the 3rd in the series, The Crooked Staircase in audio format, but actually won an ARC through Goodreads. I’m happy I did, because it introduced me to Jane Hawk.
Well done, Mr. Koontz. I’m a fairly new fan and have a lot of catching up to do!
Dean Koontz doesn’t disappoint us with this haunting tale! A must read for his followers.
I loved this series of Jane Hawk books and couldn’t put them down. I got my library book club to read the entire 5 books so we could have a separate book discussion. Jane Hawk was such a unique character and her attempt to live off the grid was a message for our times. Fortunately, she made valuable friends along the way who helped her defeat “the enemy”.
I read the entire series and hated to see it end! Top of the list favorite author!
A global conspiracy to enslave people through a nanomesh implanted in their brain. One woman intent to stop them after they murdered her husband. I loved the Jane Hawk series.
The Whispering Room by Dean Koontz is Book II of the Jane Hawk series. The books need to be read in order, and when I started the series, I had no idea there are five books, looooong books, but I am lovin’ them.
The Whispering Room picks up where The Silent Room leaves off.
I must warn you about the characters. There are so many great ones introduced, but many will not survive, so be careful who you become enamored with. She has ‘friends’ that offer their help, some willingly, some not so willingly, but this is a solo operation and she works best alone.
“They’ll all know about you in The Whispering Room.”
I loved when Jane put her mission aside to render assistance to a family. It shows what kind of person she really is. This is a nice touch, because most of the story is spent with Jane traveling here to there in search for answers.
The high and mighty sociopaths are culling the population. Why? What makes the victims such a threat? How did they even come to think of such horror? And all the other twisted, perverted things they do?
Iron Furnace, Kentucky makes the Stepford Wives look like child’s play.
Utopia…one man’s vision is another man’s horror.
I know, with the digital world we live in, there is no such thing as privacy. Every time we step foot outside our homes, we are being watched. Anyone can be found anywhere. But there are even more threats out there and I wonder if something like this could happen in the future.
I loved that I made a quick appearance, or at least my name did, Sherry. That’s always fun to see.
The action ramps up in The Whispering Room. I was not able to quit reading, rapidly flipping the pages and I mourn for some of the characters that fall victim.
Are ‘they’ going to ‘win’? How can they not? But this is fiction, so I know (?) Jane has to come out victorious.
I checked out The Whispering Room by Dean Koontz from the library and have already downloaded the next book, The Crooked Staircase.
