In this cozy mystery by a New York Times–bestselling author, a gifted bookstore owner can find the right book for any patron, but can she find a killer? The proprietor of Miracle Books in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, Nora Pennington believes that a well-chosen novel can bring healing and hope. But she and the other members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society know that sometimes practical … that sometimes practical help is needed too. Such is the case with the reed-thin girl hiding in the fiction section of Nora’s store, wearing a hospital ID and a patchwork of faded bruises. She calls herself Abilene but won’t reveal much else. And when a customer is found dead in an assumed suicide, Nora uncovers a connection that points to Abilene as either a suspect—or another target. After a second death hits town, Nora and her intrepid friends must help the new, greenhorn sheriff discern fact from fiction—and stop a killer intent on bringing another victim’s story to a close…
“A love letter to reading, with sharp characterizations and a smart central mystery.”—Entertainment Weekly

I haven’t read this yet, but I can’t wait to read it in November! I enjoyed the first in this series.
The Whispered Word ,#2 in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society, by Ellery Adams.
A well written mystery with a fast pace and realistic plot. The characters are well fleshed out — it has been fun getting to know them. There is a mention of abuse, but it is handled well.
The audio version is excellent.
The Whispered Word is the second book to A Secret, Book, and Scone Society by Ellery Adams.
After reading the first book, I couldn’t wait to start the second in the series.
It starts with a young girl hiding behind the book shelves at Nora’s book shop, Miracle Books. After seeing the state she is in, Nora takes her in for a while.
As the story progresses, you learn the sad life The girl has had.
A new business opens up and everyone is flocking to have their valuables appraised and sell but not all is what it seems.
Nora and Jed have definitely grown closer but now there is a new sheriff who seems to see Nora beyond her scars. Maybe this is just a friendship.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series and looking forward to reading the third book very soon.
There are several storylines here, a couple of them quite simple. The average reader knows what’s up with Abilene and a couple of store owners right from the start. It’s the way the lines came together that was interesting.
I’m still not fond of the characters, especially Nora (her handling of her family is just strange and selfish given the limited info. we are given), but I enjoyed this book more than the first because I think I just rolled with it better. The non-linear way the author drops in info. still irritates me a bit (getting more details about Abilene’s hospital stay for example), but I’m getting used to that too.
Like G.A. McKevett’s Granny Reid series, this series seems destined to leave me a bit sad. I like the epilogues Adam’s ends these books with. Presumably, this one is supposed to be happy for a variety of reasons, but I found it sad. I don’t like this, but it was still a satisfying and slightly surprising, to me, ending.
I liked it enough to request the next two books from the library.
This is the second book in this series. We find the same characters with some new faces. The mystery was good, it keeps you guessing. I like the comments at the start of each chapter. I would love to find a bookstore like Nora’s.
I enjoyed the book
I listened the the Audible version. I love this series. It emphasizes inner beauty and strength, the importance of books and friendship all while entertaining readers with a decent mystery. Characters are wonderful. Cris Dukehart does a great job narrating.
Great series with wonderful, fun characters.
I love this series! I love all the different books mentioned and characters. Once again Ellery Adams knows how to write so unique and stand out from the rest. This series isn’t your traditional cozy but I think it’s fantastic!
This was another wonderful book in the series. The friends try to help a young woman who appears one night in the book store. There were so many mysteries and questions to be answered about her and other newcomers to town. I really enjoyed this story.
This is such an inspiring series and a great book! I love how the 4 main characters are always there for each other and help each other heal as well as others. In this latest book, they are helping a young girl who seems to have a connection to the death of a local woman. When another death occurs and the young girl’s uncle turns up dead as well, they need to get to the bottom of things. I really hope there will be more books in this delightful healing series. We could all use friends like these. I enjoyed seeing Nora and Jed’s relationship growing as well in this book. Nora has come a long way from who she was in the first book. Highly recommended book!
The second in The Secret Book and Scone Society series proves what we knew all along, that Ellery Adams can outdo even herself. “The Whispered Word” enables us to be in on each members’ backstory just a bit more, and helps readers to understand the depth and breadth of these four hurting people in search of trust and love as they help an even more traumatized woman running from abuse to freedom, and tripping over bodies the whole way.
Ellery Adams is a gem of a writer, challenging what we know, what we think we know, and how we use that knowledge. Highly recommended. 5/5
I’m biased. I really like this author and look forward to her new books. I like her characters because they have deep flaws (like everyone) but find an acceptance. A little predictable but definitely a nice read.
I haven’t read any of Ellery Adams’ books that I didn’t like. This one is no exception.
