An “emotion-packed” New York Times–bestselling saga by the author of Cashelmara, set on a Welsh family estate in the early twentieth century (San Francisco Chronicle). Tucked in the hills of South Wales is Oxmoon, the ancestral estate of the Godwin family. In the summers before 1914, music streams through the family home as the Godwins, at the height of their prosperity, dance in the ballroom … prosperity, dance in the ballroom with their guests. But despite the remarkable talents of heir-apparent Robert Godwin, the fates have a rough, tough ride planned for him and those he loves. Fortunes shift during two world wars, disastrous love affairs leave the family battered, and finally jealousy threatens to destroy Oxmoon and all it symbolizes. Based on a true story that has been updated to modern times, The Wheel of Fortune is a timeless tale of love, hatred, revenge, redemption, and forgiveness. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Susan Howatch including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

My favorite Susan Howatch book.
One of my absolutely favorites of all time.
If I were to summarize The Wheel of Fortune in one sentence, it would be: Downton Abbey on Steroids. (And, yes, I realize that’s a phrase and not a sentence.) You’ve got scandals, you’ve got forbidden romance, you’ve got bodies and butlers and wars galore. It’s easy to imagine Julian Fellowes scratching out notes as he pored over Susan Howatch’s …
I enjoy this author and this book was well written and easy to read. Wonderful story about the early United States. Good story and great authentic characters.
One of the best books that I have ever read. Could not put it down, plot and characters drew you in and capturing your attention till the very end.
Way too long and depressing
I downloaded this book not realizing it was 1,765 pages! I thought, “No way can it keep my attention,” especially after the first nine pages but then, it took off. It was advertised as, “The most marvelous book imaginable” and it lived up to it 100%. This will remain an all-time favorite of mine. One quote I can’t forget, “Death’s all right,” she …
This book is so long, but I never wanted it to end.
Detailed saga of a Welsh family presented from point of view of different family members as the years pass.
Wonderful characters intertwine with Oxmoon, the family estate and heart of the novel. This is a great exploration into always shifting family dynamics.
Sometimes it goes on a tangent, but …
wonderful book — good story line, intriguing cast of characters and historical insight. the only negative: much too long. at least 1000 pges. long – equivalent to reading 3 books back to back to back! howatch is a good researcher and a wonderful wordsmith but she has a tendency to exhaust. will continue following her however.
Very long family saga. Interesting characters
I thought this was one of the best books I have read in a long time. Almost Greek is it’s sense of destiny. The interweaving of fate and destiny, maybe the same things, maybe not, and the effect of neuroses on generations as the Wheel of Fortune rises and falls was portrayed with great insight and sensitivity. I was totally absorbed.
LOVE Susan Howatch! Always entertaining with great stories.
Susan Howatch is one of the most amazing authors I have ever read. I was introduced to her books many, many years ago, and I have read and enjoyed everything that she has ever written!!!!!!!!!!!
Couldn’t put it down, once I started!
First read this book many years ago, reread it recently and it is still as good and holds the attention. I love history and it is interesting that as you read you know you have heard this story before and then at the last the author tells you and you say “Ah hah”
This was amazing in that it is a story of (almost) today which echos a royal family of many century’s earlier. If you like European history – read this !
Far too long.
this book was very long and waned in places. But would pick up and you couldn’t quit.
Too much
Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read! Loved the characters- experiencing the family dramas generationally. So well written.
