The thirteenth novel in Craig Johnson’s beloved New York Times bestselling Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix series Longmire Sheriff Walt Longmire is enjoying a celebratory beer after a weapons certification at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy when a younger sheriff confronts him with a photograph of twenty-five armed men standing in front of a Challenger steam locomotive. It takes him back to when, fresh from the battlefields of Vietnam, then-deputy Walt accompanied his mentor Lucian to the annual Wyoming Sheriff’s Association junket held on the excursion train known as the Western Star, which ran the length of Wyoming from Cheyenne to Evanston and back. Armed with his trusty Colt .45 and a paperback of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, the young Walt was ill-prepared for the machinations of twenty-four veteran sheriffs, let alone the cavalcade of curious characters that accompanied them. The photograph-along with an upcoming parole hearing for one of the most dangerous men Walt has encountered in a lifetime of law enforcement-hurtles the sheriff into a head-on collision of past and present, placing him and everyone he cares about squarely on the tracks of runaway revenge.
The Longmire series is a wonderful series about realistic people in a fabulous setting.
thrilling plot twists and great characters
This was an excellent who dunnit western law enforcement story with Longmire as a fresh deputy on a trainload of Wyoming County Sheriffs. Twists and turns almost like an Agatha Christie novel.
not bad, just not as good as most of his work. jumps around to much.
I usually rate this author as a 5, this book went back and forth between 2 different periods in the protagonist’s life. i found that to be not quite as satisfying as most of his books in this series.
This is the back story of our favorite sherrif! Great read!
These nooks are always a fun read. I loved the series so its fun to see the characters from the authors point of view.

A great look into the origins of the Longmire legenf
I have read all the books in the series and this one was just as good as the others. I’m looking forward to the next one.
All the books in this series are great
I was captivated by the story and now need to read the next in the series!
I enjoyed the TV show, so I decided to purchase this e-book when it was offered. I enjoyed it as much as the show. Now I want to read the entire series of books. I love the lead character of Walt Longmire, as well as all the other characters.
Longmire is a great character, but so are the other major characters. Wyoming’s land and weather is a character, too. A good plot with twists and turns.
Not as good as some other Longmire books- I’m an avid train buff and did enjoy the part played by the Western Star.
I love this series! Great characters, great plot, and the writing and story keeps me engaged!
I have enjoyed all Craig Johnstons books, except the last two. Didn’t appreaciate a cliff hanger and the voyage in to Mexico to rescue daughter. Seemed to good to have it turn out goodl with all the evil around.
