Sir Marcus Dain lives for adventure. Most other things, including his large estates and his inevitable marriage, he considers wearily to be matters of duty rather than pleasure. Until he encounters fearless, intriguing governess, Miss Helen Milsom, at the Hart Inn.
Sparks fly in terms … Inn.
Sparks fly in terms of both temper and desire, but something in this quite unsuitable woman touches his cynical heart. Then old promises and devious, matchmaking mamas get in the way.
Helen, having lost her chance of marriage ten years ago, is resigned to spinsterhood. Holding onto pride, which has seen her through many difficulties, she fights her inappropriate attraction, even when she is falsely accused and loses her position, and Sir Marcus offers her only safety.
Misunderstandings and the villainous behaviour of Helen’s one-time betrothed, combine to part them, but Marcus will not give up and sets out to remove all the obstacles to their happy-ever-after.

Miss Helen Milsom, the Overton’s governess finds the family gone and goes to the Hart Inn hoping to find a room and where she meets Sir Marcus Dain. Marcus lives for adventure, but he knows he must start thinking about settling down and find a wife. His encounter Helen and who leaves him intrigued with her uncanny wit and who can verbally fence with the best. Helen feels she’s lost her chance at marriage and tries to fight her attraction to Marcus. The Hart Inn is always entertaining filled with intrigue, lies and false accusations, romance and a little mystery. Love this series!!! An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.
This has turned out to be the most interesting series that catches your imagination, thoughts and wonder at the situations the characters find themselves in. Of course, it begins at the wonderful Hart Inn as Sir Marcus Dain and the Miss Helen Milsom bump into each other. Fireworks immediately start between them as they begin to discover each other. Each has a reason for not marrying and Sir Dain is a person that does not stay in one place very long. He has an estate but finds he would rather wander than staying at home. Miss Milson is a governess that loves her position but realizes that her chance for marriage has passed her by. Surprises along the way keep this an interesting read and I really enjoyed it.
The Weary Heart by Mary Lancaster is the newest and possibly the best in Lancaster’s Unmarriageable series. It revolves around Miss Helen Milsom, the Overton’s governess and Sit Marcus Dain who meet inauspiciously at the Hart, the closest inn to Audley Park, the home of the Overtons. Helen has arrived home to discover the house close up and the family away so she has arrived at the Hart hoping to find a room for the night. There are none and although Dain has a sitting room and a bedchamber, he is not inclined to share. Never one to be still, Helen lets him know in uncertain terms how she feels about his behavior. One things leads to another and the initial animosity turns into an attraction, which did not go unnoticed by the mother and father of a young woman hoping to bring him up to scratch, despite the fact that he is twice her age, and not inclined toward marriage.
This is a fabulous series. It is full of men and women who are meant to be together and eventually arrive at that conclusion themselves, but there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. Marcus is tall, dark, and introverted. He has been through a lot in his life and is happy to be left alone. Helen is a wonderful governess, having been raised a lady, she knows all the right things and she loves her boisterous charges. They love her in return. She is honest as the day is long and so is not match for those around her that can be underhanded. She can take care of herself. She will not be anyone’s pity project. Her path to true love is long and arduous but she hangs in and so does he. I went a bought the rest of the series after reading this one. Thank you Mary Lancaster. I loved them all. If you love historical romance, you will love this series. I recommend it.
