THE WAY OF THE BRAVE
Susan May Warren
The vast aloneness of Alaska gave Orion the space to breathe, to scream
Ham wanted Orion to join his private international company SAR. He didn’t want anything to do with special op’s any more, or anybody’s troubles.
The need to find Royal a teammate captured in Afghanistan burned within, , the reasons were enough to get him to board a plane to NY and meet Ham.
Enough with other people’s trouble, he needed to be in Alaska.
Jenny, still facing the terrible mistakes she made, almost killing a man
Climbing Denali was something she had to do, needing a guide, Orion comes to mind, she won’t ask, sure he wouldn’t even want to talk to her.
She tells the men to join her group of 3 women to climb Denali together.
The plot is mainly of them climbing, and the rescues that happen. What drives them is guilt, wanting forgiveness, to name a few. Good account of how dangerous it is. Their mantra is, don’t look down, and one step at a time.
Good cast of people have been introduce, so hopefully they will have their own story to tell. Being this was the first in this series, we had more background on Jenny and Orion, of where they were coming from.Overall will look for more in the series. Given ARC. Y Net Galley and Revell for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Where to begin with this book. So you know when you get on a rollercoaster and it starts off slow then starts to pick up and slows down a little then some twist and turns and then slows for a sec before the last climb and the biggest drop and the whole time you are holding on for dear life because you don’t know what’s coming, yeah well that is this book. If had be guessing what was going to happen next and who was going to live, die and who was going to make the next biggest jump. So so good. I will say this while there was a small part in the book I really wish the author would have followed up it did not break the whole book for me, I just wanted to know what happened lol. I loved that the author held nothing back, the author does take you all over with your emotions and yet kept the book a clean read and suitable for all. I would say give yourself some time because once you start you will not want to stop reading. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to post a review and have given my honest opinion
This book had my heart beating really fast. It was intense, filled with humor and great characters. I cannot wait to get to know more about these characters. The friendships are amazing. I love the conversations about between Ham and Orrion. Ham’s faith is inspiring. Jenny is such an intriguing woman. She is trying to make up for past mistakes. The trips she takes to conquer her fears are not for the faint of heart.
Orrion and Jenny have a great support system. This is one of the things I love with Ms. Warren’s characters. She creates families whether they are present believers or not. I appreciated how people’s relationship with God were portrayed. It was filled with great faith and doubts. It is real.
I received this book from the publisher and the opinions expressed are entirely my own.
The Way of the Brave” is by Susan May Warren. It is the first in the Global Search and Rescue book series. It is very action packed and riveting . The setting in the Denali Mountains in Alaska. The Denali Mountains are dangerous and risky to climb. The terrain of the mountains can change quickly and the climbers are left to quickly decide their next move to safe their lives and the lives of the others with them. The climbers are brave people who attempt to climb this mountain. The setting is well described so the reader and follow what is coming. The climbers each bond with each other from their challenging life experiences in the past and as they climb. The climbing strategies are explained in the book with technical language but the reader can piece the story together. The story is Jenny Calhoun’s, , a psychologist and Orion Starr , a pararescue jumper story. It focuses most on their lives and interactions with each other. The author writes about real life struggles so the reader can connect to the story. The author has a great way of addressing questions the characters have about their relationship with God. Ham’s relationship with God is an inspiration to the other characters. He believes in God’s goodness even when we can’t see His goodness and God is still working. This issue is a difficult issue for many Christians and is written in a good way to help the reader resolve it in the book. The author is Susan May Warren. She has received several outstanding awards ;such as, the Rita award, multiple Christy awards and Carol awards. This book is a good escape elements of romance, thriller and the reader will have a hard time moving from their seat with the book. Thank you for allowing me to read and review this book. It is excellent and highly recommended. The opinions are the opinions of my own.
This is the first book in Susan May Warren’s new series – Global Search and Rescue. Unlike many of her previous books this one is very much a man versus nature story of survival. It follows Jenny Calhoun and Orion Starr. Both are dealing with the consequences of a tragedy that took place several years before in Afghanistan. Orion has questions about the attack that ended his military career. Jenny has the answers he seeks, but revealing them may cost them a future together. As they meet again, they find themselves fighting a different kind of battle on the dangerous slopes of Denali.
I loved the book. As always, Warren has well developed characters that jump off the pages of the book. This story takes places concurrently with the events in her Montana Marshalls series. While this is a standalone series, I suspect she’ll be interweaving the plot lines throughout it to answer a few lingering questions from the Montana Marshalls (an awesome series which I also recommend you read). The climbing details she includes really make you feel like you’re there, trekking through whiteouts, a cold wind sending a chill through you, or reaching for the next handhold as you dangle from the side of a cliff.
The story is action packed from the start. I love to see the interactions between the characters – not just Jenny and Orion but also Jake and Aria. I look forward to where she’s going to go with Jake and Ham in the coming books.
I also enjoy how she seamlessly weaves in the spiritual struggles of the characters. They add depth to the struggles of the characters without being preachy.
While not a cliffhanger, the end of this book does set up the story for the next one. Expect to want to keep reading. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.

I enjoyed the edge of your seat action at every turn. At every turn Jenny has a mountain to overcome literally. She is trying to forget her past mistake when people were killed because she gave the go ahead for a mission that ended in disaster. Orion wants to find out who is responsible for the mission that cost him his career and the lives of his friends. He has become a hermit in Alaska. That is until Hamilton Jones asks him to lead a mountain climb. He knew Jenny was that time. But as JC. He doesn’t know the part she played in the mission.
The only part I didn’t particularly care for was the bedroom scene near the end of the book. Nothing happened. But it almost did. I realize temptation is always there, but I didn’t think it was necessary to the book.
Overall all, I recommend this book to all who like lots of action.
I was given this book by Revell Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Susan May Warren has Masterfully Crafted another Intense, Christian, Romantic Suspense Series in: “The Way of The Brave, Global Search & Rescue Book 1”!
You get 3 ladies, who’ve prepared to climb Alaska’s Mount Denali. Then you have the 3 SAR men, who go to rescue them after disaster strikes. My Denali is also one of the story’s main characters! But ultimately, this is Jenny & Orion’s Second Chance Story!
The Novel is Soooo Engrossing, I had to keep reading. Everyone needs, to take to heart, Ham’s compelling insights! Like this one (pg 88): “That thing inside you that you can’t keep dodging, that pull to do something more with your life? God isn’t finished with you yet. He’s calling you to something—-” See how God Rescues Jenny & Orion’s Spiritual lives, as He draws them to their Forever !
If you like an Adrenaline Rush of Action/Adventure/Danger in your Romance, I Highly Recommend You Read This Outstanding Story! SMW has created another Christian Masterpiece, that provides Inspiration as it Entertains!
You can always count on Susan May Warren to deliver a novel filled with adventure, suspense, strong characters, and tension filled romance. And this latest release certainly fulfills her reputation. Featuring an action packed climb of the treacherous Denali, you will be on the edge of your seat as twist after twist erupts and threatens the lives of characters you are genuinely rooting for. Warren fills the pages with spell binding descriptions, making you feel like you are watching a movie rather than reading a book. I was reminded of the film Everest over and over!
But perhaps another hallmark of Warren’s writing is her ability to weave a strong message of faith and truth through her mesmerizing plot. Without being preachy, she challenges and inspires her readers to live the freedom and truth Jesus Christ has for us. I always come away from a Warren book not only entertained, but looking deeper into my own soul.
You will love Warren’s new series! I just wish the second one was out already!
I received this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
This was an amazing story. It takes you from Afghanistan to New York to Alaska. It all started in Afghanistan where Jenny made a bad call as a profiler which led to deaths and left behind the man she fell in love with, Orion. Several years later Jenny and her friends plan a mountain climbing expedition in Denali Alaska. They do this to “conquer their fears”. Each has some heavy baggage to unload. Before their climb Jenny runs into Orion and acts as if she doesn’t know him, her guilt lays heavily on her. When they get on the snowy mountain with its ever-changing patterns on the glaciers, Jenny and her friends get separated from their guide and get lost in a snowy crevice. Injured and lost they fight to move to a different spot to be found. In the meantime Orion and his rescue friends search for the ladies with dire circumstances of their own. This has a wonderfully written ending. Get ready to read this without putting it down. It’s that good. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
This is a well written book that is full of action, adventure and romance. It hooks you on the first page and doesn’t let go. The author draws you into the story with words that play out like a movie in your mind. This is going to be another wonderful series by Susan May Warren! I received an ARC copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
WOW!! Nonstop adrenaline filled adventure from beginning to end!
Jenny, Sasha and Aria have a yearly girls mountain climb every year so they can remember how strong they are together and what they have overcome in their individual lives. When their climb goes bad, they are forced to fight for their lives against the severe elements and mountains.
Orion, Ham and Jake are the rescue team who go after the women and the other lost hiking group. I liked how they worked together and their strong drive to help and rescue others.
This story mostly focuses on Jenny and Orion‘s relationship especially from three years ago when they previously met in Afghanistan. Over the years, life events changed both of them and they both struggled with regret, anger, faith and loss. As they fight for their lives against the elements, they are able to communicate more and work thru their struggles and faith in God.
I really hope book 2 (comes out this summer) will pick up with Aria and Jake-they seemed to really hit it off in this book. I also hope we will find out more about Ham’s family and more about their rescues as a team.
I loved all the different dynamics of the three men and women. Can’t wait to read more from this global search and rescue series. I could barely catch my breath with all of the action in this book and didn’t want to stop reading.
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
Adrenaline rush
As I read through this, the descriptive language, the easy flow of words, and the smoothness of the text, enticed me to keep reading. As I read about the near misses I could almost feel the adrenaline rush alongside the characters’ experiences. I can see why this author has such a strong reader following. She is a talented writer. The only drawback for me is that I haven’t read all of her previous books and her style of writing is to always include characters from past books and their stories are all interwoven in each book, making it very challenging for those not well versed in her previous novels to keep up. Otherwise, this is a great book.
The Way of the Brave is the first installment of the Global Search and Rescue series by Susan May Warren. Overall, I enjoyed it. I’m totally invested in the series and have already pre-ordered the second installment. The characters are well-developed and are all likable. While book one focuses on Orion Starr and Jenny Calhoun, you’ll also learn much about Hamilton (Ham) and Jake, our heroes in later installments. The Way of the Brave is a book about grace, forgiveness, and redemption, and Warren does a great job of showing how grace works. There’s plenty of action and the rescues are extremely suspenseful. One thing you should know; however, is there’s a lot of mountaineering and climbing terminology. I’m not a climber, and I’m also not the sort of person who can skip over words I’m unfamiliar with, so the first third of the book took me longer than normal to get through. I had to stop and look up words often, which interrupted the flow of the story. I’d say this was the one negative thing about the book. But, if you stick with it, you’ll know a whole lot of mountain climbing terminology by the time you finish. And the action and characterizations are worth the effort to get through the first third. I received an ARC, but I’ve also ordered the paperback.
With superb word pictures, Susan May Warren writes like she’s eavesdropped on conversations and experienced many extreme adventures and careers. In this debut of her new series, the first chapter explodes onto the page and reverberates within readers while the intensity climbs and extends until the final page. Anticipation reaches the summit for the next two installments.
Here’s a survival guide as you empathize with Orion Starr, Jenny Calhoun, their friends and colleagues climbing Denali:
1. Allow ample time for reading over a few days.
2. Keep a constant supply of the hot drink of your choice.
3. Use a cozy blanket and preferably fireplace.
4. Enlist helpful stress management techniques.
5. Hopefully, lessons learned by the climbers will teach you by example.
I received a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.
When I read a book, I like to highlight or underline quotes that are powerful and gripping. Well, in this new book by Susan May Warren it’s as if the WHOLE book is underlined. In the first paragraph, there is a quote that shows the mood of our hero Orion.
“But he belonged in all that cold and darkness, under the shadow of unforgiving Denali, buried under a numbing layer of ice and snow.”
Orion is a man trapped with dark feelings of anger for a past he had no control of. Jenny has a secret that is eating her alive and so she climbs to the highest mountains to try to feel free of the darkness she has. Orion and Jenny both are brave, yet neither one feels brave. Their pasts haunt them, and they don’t know how to get beyond the pain they believe they caused others.
This story takes place on a beautiful mountain in Alaska. Denali is the highest mountain in North America. It is a stunning mountain and there are many who fly over or hike it. Any time of the year, people flock to it to see its beauty and majesty. It can also be one of the most dangerous. In this book, you will experience real death dropping action and scenes. The author keeps us on the seat of our chairs gripping the armrest trying to breathe. I’m so glad I’m not one of her characters because of all the things she puts them through. WOW! The action is non-stop and jaw-dropping. The way Susan May Warren describes the mountain and the action will leave you feeling you’re right there with each step.
I’m at a loss to have words eloquent enough to convey the depth of emotions and feelings I get each time I pick up one of Susan May Warrens’ books. In each of her books, I find wonderful life lessons of the love of God, woven in such a way that it is real and not fake or pushed.
Whatever Ms. Warren writes I’ll read because I know I’ll be captivated and blessed in a way that is life-changing.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first book in a new series for Susan May Warren and she has scored a home run (again). I don’t think anyone can write about hunky hero’s like she does. This one is a mountain climber who rescues people who get lost and this time it was a woman from his past whom he was in love with. This book is full of danger, romance and suspense and at times it will keep you on the edge wondering how in the world they are going to get out of their situation. I can tell you I never want to climb Denali. If you read the Montana Marshall’s Series you will get to revisit some of the characters from those books in this one. I love the way Susan May Warren writes the salvation message into her books and weaves it into the story. She is definitely one of my favorite authors and I have read most of her books. I am so glad that I have been privileged to read this one and I can’t wait for the next one in the series. I received a complimentary copy of an ARC of this book from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my very own.
This one kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. In addition to the main love story, there was another one developing, and it added something special to this novel and made me want to read the rest of the series.
There was a lot of technical language with regard to the ice climbing aspect of the book, and some of the description scenes near the start were hard to get through, but once I made it to chapter two, I was intrigued by the story and hardly stopped until I’d finished it.
I’ve read most of Susan May Warren’s books going all the way back to her earliest series. This book, as well as some of her other recent books, feels a little formulaic. Some of the same phrases are used over and over not just in this book, but in the others in the series. A great light read.
I’ll read any book she writes. And I have. 🙂
I have now read 5 of this author’s books. They are well-researched and detailed. I found though that they are very intense and had to take many breaks just to recover from the tension. I also thought she over-played the drama. When I thought that finally things were going to be resolved, then the tension would arise again and sometimes that was extremely frustrating.
