In The Way of Kings, #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson introduces readers to the fascinating world of Roshar, a world of stone and storms. It has been centuries since the fall of the Knights Radiant, but their mystical swords and armor remain, transforming ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. One such war rages on the Shattered Plains where Kaladin, son of a surgeon, has been reduced to slavery, and Dalinar, commander of the armies, is plagued by dreams of ancient times, doubting his own sanity.
Across the ocean, Shallan, a naive but brave and brilliant young woman, plans a daring theft to save her impoverished noble house from ruin.

I almost stopped on this story because it was pretty confusing in the beginning, what with all the different kinds of “spren,” which didn’t make any sense at all at the time. However, I was intrigued enough with some of the characters that I went on reading and I’m glad I did. It turned out to be an interesting story and now I’m tempted to buy the next book. At $9.99 I’ll have to think about it some more, though, plus I don’t know how long until the series if finished and don’t want to be left hanging.
Still, if you enjoy fantasy and different kinds of magic I think you’ll like this one.
One of the best epic fantasy books I’ve ever read. Sanderson creates a unique world with deep characters and an intricate magic system. Highly recommend.
The first in a proposed 10 book epic fantasy series. It does start out slow. Be patient, let Brandon set up the world and the characters. Just after the half mark it picks up, and the “Sanderlanch” (the pacing of his books always accelerates about the last third/last quarter) is oh so satisfying.
Sanderson’s worlds are beyond “page-turning.” Getting readers through over a thousand pages is one thing; getting them through all those pages wanting still more is another level of writing entirely. I didn’t even take a break after this book before starting the next (Words of Radiance), and now that I’m over halfway through that one, I’m already looking forward to the third.
Great epic fantasy — one of the best, even better that Game of Thrones. And that’s only because the fantasy element in this book is so strong and unique!
Could not put this book down. I have purchased and read all three of the series and have not been disappointed. I have recommended this book to all my friends.
Strong start to this epic series. Imaginative, sprawling world with compelling characters and an interesting story. A little slow at times, but he’s building the groundwork for “Words of Radiance,” which is supposed to put the epic back in epic.
I thought Sanderson did a great Job completing the WoT series for Robert Jordan. I have read the first two books in the Stormlight Archive series and have been “The Way of Kings” and “Words of Radiance” and thought they were both extremely good. Anyone interested in epic fantasy stories like “the Wheel of Time” will enjoy this series. The character building is excellent, and though some of the fantasy aspects of this world seem very strange at first, once you work your way through the intricacies of how things work, you come to accept them (this is a fantasy world, remember!). Definitely more like “Wheel of Time” than it is “Game of Thrones”, and unlike both of those series, you don’t feel like you get bogged down in the story at times. The only drawback is that though it is a huge story, Sanderson has a number of other projects that he works on, so the books are not being released as frequently as some might like. He has a plan for ten total books, and at the current rate he is getting them into our hands, that puts the final book coming out in about 2040.
Magnificent world and character development the pages just flew by.
Very dense but well writtten and compelling.
Way of Kings has beautiful magic, incredible characters, and a world you can dive deep into.
The Way of Kings is one of the most entertaining books I have every read. The world is so alien, and yet so familiar, the characters are real, both the good and the bad. It’s one of those books that you start reading, and then four or five hours have passed without you realizing it. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves epic fantasy.
It is is LONG but engaging enough that it is easy to keep reading it. The first of 3 LONG books. As a fast reader, i appreciate a good story tat lasts more than an afternoon. It was enjoyable to read, had some interesting thoughts in it, and I would recommend it highly!
I am reading the third book in the series now and I still hate having to put it down (though it is physically very heavy too). The first book has a slow start and isn’t always easy to get through but man…once you start caring about characters you just want to keep going, to see the next surprise and so on. It’s fantastic!
Amazing, simply amazing. I picked this up from a free ebook deal and have since read the rest of the available books in the series and am now working through the author’s other books. Normally fantasy is a kind of escape from reality, though this doesn’t feel like it due to gritty and realistic characters struggling through life. I highly recommend this!
best book I have read in a long time. I highly recommend ALL the books in this series
Awesome book. If you like epic fantasy don’t miss this one . Brandon Sanderson never disappoints
