I don’t think the dictionary contains enough superlatives for me to tell you how much I enjoyed this series and this book. I have never given 5-star ratings to all of the books in a series before, so this is definitely a first. The story immediately sucked me right into that time period and the lives of the people who dwell there and it didn’t let me go until some hours after I had read the last words. It is well plotted, excellently written and has very likable and relatable characters. You COULD read this as a stand-alone if you insist, but I cannot imagine why you’d want to. The first book sets up the background excellently and the second book builds and the third book – well, sadly I guess it ends it. There is also a most excellent ‘Afterward’ in the book, but I would have loved to see an Epilogue from 5 or so years down the road to see how they are all doing, how the kids, are, etc. After all – Cull had only just met his brothers at the end of the book and I’d love to know how their relationships developed. Yep – that is my one and only complaint about the book.
Derryth MacClaren has been pulled from her bed in the wee hours of the morning to be dressed in the clothes of a servant. She’s placed on a donkey and told she must leave the castle immediately. She’s still groggy but knows she cannot, absolutely cannot, leave her nine-months-pregnant sister Elspeth (heroine from the first story in the series). However, Elspeth and her husband, Niall insist she must leave. Then, she suddenly knew why she was being made to leave. “It’s the Wolf, isn’t it?” Just speaking his name caused her vision to blur and her throat to close. As she set out on her journey she was accompanied by three of Niall’s best warriors and her old nursemaid. They were to take a circuitous route to get to their destination – it made the trip longer, but should have been safer.
Sir Cull the Nameless is a knight in service to the king of Scotland. He’s the best warrior and the most honorable warrior in all of Scotland as well. Cull was a slave on a ship and was rescued by Buchan who took him to Scotland and placed him in a school to be trained as a warrior. Cull was only twelve years old when he was rescued and he had no idea what his name was or how long he’d been on that slaver’s ship. Buchan has now called him to the Highlands of Scotland to perform a task for the King even though Cull has never been to the Highlands. Cull dreams of having a name, land and a family and this new mission will give him all of that. All he has to do is defeat the people at the legendary Castle in the Clouds and take possession.
Cull’s forces are encamped several miles away from the castle when he hears a commotion and heads out to see what is going on. Some of the seedier men in his employ have defied his orders and stopped a set of peasant travelers on the road. Now that they have seen his encampment, he can’t let them go until after the battle. However, one of the servants is a young woman that he knows won’t last long with the men in his camp – so, he places her in his tent to avoid her being molested.
Elspeth is frightened, but she cannot let the soldiers know who she is. They could use her as leverage over her sister and brother-in-law. She’ll play the part of a servant and learn all she can of their plans – and she’ll do everything she can to escape.
Since Cull has Elspeth in his tent, they can’t help but come into contact with each other. Some of those interactions are funny – like kittens embroidered on his tunic – and others are enlightening. He becomes more and more possessive and protective of her – and she returns that, but she knows she has to escape and warn the castle.
The way they come to trust and love is a delightful thing for them to share with us. They are both so sweet, kind and caring and their journey is not an easy one. In the end, you sometimes just have to learn to trust those you love.
I was so pleased that the author tied up all of the loose ends for the series. Everyone and everything was accounted for. That said, I would have loved to learn more of what happened to Duncan – he certainly deserved more punishment than it seems he got. Also, there is Robert – I loved Robert and would dearly love to see the author do a story for him. He definitely deserves his own HEA. As I said earlier, I would have loved to see an epilogue further down the road to see how all was going with them. Maybe, just maybe, the author will add a fourth book, even if it is a novella, and we’ll catch up with all of them and see Robert get his HEA and see Duncan get his just deserts.
I highly recommend this book and this series.

“I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.”
Captured by the enemy! But so far he doesn’t know that Derryth MacClaren is the sister of the wife of Niall Braewick, Highland Laird of Kincaid, whose castle this army’s plans to capture. Whew! She was sent out of the castle with an escort to avoid capture by the Wolf, Buchan, evil son of the King of Scotland, an enemy sworn to vengeance against the Kincaids. An enemy warrior claims her and confines her to his tent for her own safety. That does not sit well with Derryth. The mischievious woman plays some tricks on her captor, Cull the Nameless, former slave but now part of the King’s Guard. Soaking his bed will be great payback she thinks. Wrong. She ends up having to share her narrrow pallet with the strong, handsome warrior she is attracted to. Cull tells her she and her party will be let go after the troops are in place for the seige of the castle. He doesn’t want her or anyone in her party to alert the Kincaids even though they profess to not be Kincaid allies. Will they be let go? What about the attraction between Derryth and Cull? This can’t have a good ending. Or can it?
The Warrior of Clan Kincaid is the third book in author Lily Blackwood’s awesome Highland Warrior series. Each book in this series has been filled with thrilling action, intrigue and sweet loving. This final chapter in the Kincaid’s saga is no exception and I found it to be the best of the three. All of Lily Blackwood’s characters are well-developed and realistic. They practically step off the page and make you feel that you are a part of the story. I loved the strength of character of Derryth MacClaren and the honor of Cull. See for yourself how exciting it is to step into the Highlands with the Kincaids, discover the joy of finding the youngest Kincaid brother alive and well and enjoy this adventure. I highly recommend it!
We have now come full circle with the Braewick brothers of Clan Kincaid. This is my favorite book of the series. Cull is a warrior but is kind and sympathetic. Derryth is feisty but also kind. An enemies to lovers story that will have you cheering for them to be together. Their interactions are fantastic and it feels like you are right in the middle of their arguments. I loved this story.
So, the reveal of the brothers is done but I have a question – what happens to Robert? I need him to have a story. A spin-off series?
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Derryth MacClaren is sent away from Inverhaven by her sister Elspeth for her own protection, rumors suggest that the Earl of Buchan aka the Wolf has once more set his sites on Inverhaven, so she is being sent home until the threat has passed. But their plan is thwarted when a few hours into the journey, they are captured – by Cull the Nameless, a member of the King’s Guard.
Cull saves Derryth from being raped but he cannot let her or her kinsmen go, he takes her back to his tent to keep her safe and tells her she and her kinsmen will be set free once they have taken the castle. Cull is acting on orders from Buchan, the man who rescued him from slavers as a child and trained him as a warrior. He hasn’t seen the orders to take Inverhaven, but he trusts Buchan.
Derryth keeps her identity a secret and at first tries to escape Cull, but when that doesn’t work she torments him. When Cull arranges for her to see Fiona and Deargh, Deargh suggests that she could be useful by keeping her eyes and ears open for information that will help her family beat Buchan. She changes her tact with Cull and soon discovers he is not the beast she thought he was. As they grow closer and she learns of her, her secrets weigh on her – she cares for Cull and desires him, but giving into her desire would be a betrayal to her family.
Cull is falling for Derryth, when he learns part of her secret, he will have to decide if his loyalty to Buchan and the promise of his greatest desire is worth more than his love for her. But when he believes Derryth has betrayed and used him, he tries to forget her and focuses on taking Inverhaven and the promised reward that comes with his success. However, all is not as it seems and when Robert (Buchan’s son) questions the orders to take Inverhaven, Cull realizes he is being used and goes to see Buchan for answers. When he gets to Craven, he finds more than he ever imagined and the truths he has known his entire life will be turned upside down. Truths will be revealed, promises will be made, secrets will be shared, jealousy will be rampant and others will interfere to keep our lovers apart and help will come from an unexpected source.
Of the three books, this one is far and away my favorite, it is a well written, fast paced, steamy read with a lot of secrets, twists and turns, betrayal, shocking revelations, a little heartbreak and finally a very satisfying HEA. There are a couple of things that kept this from being a 5 star read for me, but none of them are major, a dropped storyline, a couple of scenes that did nothing to move the story along and an unbelievable love scene – nothing that ruined the story, but did distract me, but please note, the copy I read was an uncorrected edition, so issues I encountered, may well be corrected before publication. This is the third book in the series, but it can definitely be read as a standalone title. I am happy to recommend the book and hope Ms. Blackwood is planning a story for Robert, because that is a book I definitely would like to read!
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an uncorrected eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher.*
“One kiss, and I am lost.”
Derryth MacClaren flees for her life to escape capture by The Wolf, an enemy of the Clan Kincaid. But by running from the one enemy, she ends up running into the arms of another. Finding herself amongst warriors bent on attacking her home, Derryth is startled when she looks upon their commander, Cull the Nameless. Cull is none other than the missing son of the slain Laird Kincaid. Even within the den of enemies, Derryth grows fond of her captor, and he of her. Their romance blossoms into a love so fierce, there is nothing they won’t do for the other, including going up against The Wolf himself.
The Warrior of Clan Kincaid is a well written highlander story I enjoyed, and will go back to read the first two in the series. Highly recommend this romance by Lily Blackwood!
*Received ARC via NetGalley by publisher for honest review*
Wow! The Warrior of Clan Kincaid by Lily Blackwood is a phenomenal historical romance. Cull was bought from a slavers ship and became a warrior for the King ‘s Guard. Derryth was kidnapped by Cull’s men on her way home from visiting her sister. Derryth and Cull’s story is loaded with action, suspense, humor, steamy sex, drama and lots of twists and turns. This story captured me at the first page and didn’t let me go until the end. I loved it. The Warrior of Clan Kincaid is book 3 of the Highland Warrior Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“The most dangerous weapons live and breathe.” –A.J. Sky, Icestorm
Rating: MA due to violence, graphic and explicit sex scenes, trigger warning due to sexual violence toward a female, lewd and disgusting language, discussions of revenge, death, cruelty, and murder. Angst Level: medium-to-high: stressors due to violent acts. Source: own: 21 -chapters.
Twelve-year-old Niall Braewick and his two younger brothers [8-year-old Faelan, and 5-year-old Cullen] were rushed out of Castle Kincaid when the attack came. He watched as each brother was taken in a different direction than his own. Niall didn’t understand. The three clans were friendly and were having a gathering… a festival. What had happened? The chieftains were allies. Why would the once faithful vassal clans Alwyn and MacClaren suddenly betray the Kincaids?
“Cowards shrink from challenges, weaklings flee from them, but warriors wink at them.” –Matshona Dhliwayo
Seventeen years later, Cull the Nameless had no history that he could remember. Occasionally, vague shadow memories would invade his dreams but he had no family, no name, and no home. His early life had been spent in the hull of a slaver’s ship. One day a man with a strange accent [that was vaguely familiar] bought his freedom and asked if he would like to fight for the King of Scotland. He was taken to a training camp for boys and grew up as one of the King’s men. He rose in the ranks and gained the respect of his fellow warriors and the King’s Council.
In this final segment of the Kincaid story, there were many surprises, horrors, shocking revelations, and nail-biting situations. OMG! I thought I was going to have apoplexy as tensions rose. Whew! This was amazing. The villains were cruel and their motives chilling. One, in particular, was disgusting and a degenerate pig. OMG!

Highland Warrior Series: Clan Kincaid
Book 1: The Beast of Clan Kincaid [Niall Braewick and Elspeth MacClaren]
Book 2: The Rebel of Clan Kincaid [Magnus/Faelan Braewick and Tara Iverach]
Book 3: The Warrior of Clan Kincaid [Cull/Cullen Braewick and Derryth MacClaren]
Loved the series!!
The journey from beginning to end is full of twists and turns! Definitely not a boiler plate plot.
Excellent read
Loved it!! Would like more free historical romance books!!
I’ve read the previous 2 books and this final book does not disappoint! In this book Derryth MacClaren leaves her castle home to avoid the fighting that is sure to happen. The Wolf is determined to destroy the clan Kincaid and has his famed warrior Cull the Nameless leading the battle. When Derryth’s small traveling party is captured by Cull’s army, they must endure days of captivity all the while knowing that the army will attack the castle. Can they escape and warn Laird Kincaid or will they have to stand by and watch helplessly as their family and clan are in a battle to the death.
I really liked the interaction between Derryth and Cull. It was a slow buildup of sexual tension and as secrets are revealed, these two must decide if they can act on their mutual attraction or remain enemies. Ms. Blackwood teases out the details of Cull’s background and there’s a clever twist to the ending. Fans of Scottish romances will certainly enjoy this final book in the Kincaid trilogy.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review and was not obligated to leave a review.
A perfect ending to the brothers’ stories! I think Cull was my favorite out of all three. A warrior with a soft heart for the woman under his protection. I also related to Derryth through most of the story. Deception, loyalty, romance, and the perfect happily ever after.
I’m hoping Robert gets a story… he may not be a member of Clan Kincaid, but he deserves a happy ever after!
Lily S. Thomas – Author of the Ice Age Alphas series and Galactic Courtship series
This book is the final installment of Lily Blackwood’s Highland Warrior Series. Cullen the Nameless is a great warrior for an evil nobleman known only as The Wolf. Derryth MacClaren is captured by Cullen and his army as she is leaving the castle that houses the Kincaid clan. He keeps Derryth close to him to keep her out of trouble. She sees the strange mark on his skin and tells him that he is the long lost youngest Kincaid brother. This is troublesome news as Cullen and his army are preparing to attack the Kincaids.
I really enjoyed this entire series. The plot is very well thought out and rich with detail. I liked all three of the Kincaid brothers and their respective love interests. Lily Blackwood is making a name for herself in the world of Highland romances.
This is the third book in the Clan Kincaid series. There was a bit of a wait for this final book, but it was well worth it! While the book is good on it’s own, it’s probably best to read at least the first book (The Beast of Clan Kincaid) before you read this. The prologue in that book tells the story of the night the three brothers are made orphans, and are separated in order to try and save them from murder. The hero in this book – Cullen, or Cull as he’s called – is a man with no last name, but with an abundance of honor. The heroine – Derryth – is a woman who starts out as pampered, but sees that she wants to become something more than what she is. Her growth during the book is absolutely believable.
I received The Warrior of Clan Kincaid by Lily Blackwood from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. This is the first time I have read anything from Lily Blackwood and the third book from her Highland Warrior series.
Derryth MacClaren is sent in the dead of night from her home in the midst of a vicious attack to keep her safe. However, she is captured by Cull and claims her as his prize. Cull has no memory of his family or past. Only that The Wolf saved him from a slave boat and gave him a chance as a warrior. As Derryth and Cull spend time together, attractions develop and there can be no denying their feelings. But, as Derryth and Cull grow closer together, The Wolf, strives to keep them apart and to keep Cull’s history from him. As the truth comes to light, Derryth is afraid of losing Cull to The Wolf and his family.
I enjoyed the book… once I figured out what was going on. I would highly recommend reading the first two to understand the characters. Cull was a fair and honest hero and Derryth was temperamental in the beginning. From Derryth’s musings, I think she was spoiled and not very independent. But, Derryth grows and matures as the book continues.
The ending sneaks up on you. It reads more as a summary of what happens. I enjoyed the book but would have preferred more time and pages on the ending than some of the filler during the book. All in all, an enjoyable introduction to Blackwood and her writing. #TheWarriorofClanKincaid #NetGalley
Rescued from slavery, Sir Cull the Nameless repays his benefactor by becoming one of the Kings own guard and his best and most trusted warrior. He hopes soon to win the right to lands and a family of his own.
Derryth MacClaren is not happy about being sent to safety when trouble arrives. Unfortunately the route they take is the wrong one. Our heroine is a lot stronger than she believes.
Our hero has suffered all his life and will soon discover the ulterior motives behind it all.
An exciting highland adventure, full of great characters.
I love a story set in medieval times so I was especially excited to read this one. It starts out pretty fast with Darreyth having to flee into the night with the threat of danger looming over her sister’s home. Unfortunately, she is sent directly into the path of the very army that they were trying to protect her from.
Cull rescues her from a horrible fate at the hand of paid mercenaries and thinks she is nothing but a child, covered in mud. I love when the hero doesn’t recognize the heroine for who or what she is so I settled in to enjoy it. Once Cull lays eyes on the grown woman Darreyth, he’s a goner though he continually reminds himself to get it under control. It doesn’t work. He falls hard and fast, as does she.
And that is where I felt a bit disconnected to the story. They are falling and yet they’ve barely spoken. There is internal monologue showing strong feelings but nothing to support those feelings. I did try to push it aside but I couldn’t help that I didn’t feel real chemistry between these two. And I like an insta-love story but, in my opinion, it just didn’t work with this one.
However, I did like the intrigue that is the focal point of the story. I was curious how this couple would find their HEA since Cull was pretty much assigned to kill Darreyth’s family. There was a bit of a twist that, while it didn’t completely surprise me, was a very nice touch.
This is a fast paced read with some nice secondary characters. The villains were within reason of the era while the other characters help to lead the story where it needed to go. There were still some loose ends that didn’t get tied up and I’m not sure if they will be dealt with in future books. The steam was pretty intense and the humor low. The angst was medium first due to the heroine being a “prisoner” as well as her secret and then due to the battle between good and bad.
Overall, this was a nice read and I would certainly try another book by this author.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a phenomenal read! As with all of Lily Blackwood’s stories this one didn’t disappoint! Everything came together as it should. I really recommend that you start the series from the beginning. I loved the plot it flowed well and the characters were likeable. The romance between the hero and heroine was palpable. Honorable and fearless Cull finds what he’s been looking for in Derryth. This was full of emotional twists the plot keeps you in suspense the romance is sizzling.
I recieved a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my unbiased opinion.
I enjoyed this story of a warrior, Cull, and his captive, Derryth, who were on opposite sides of an anticipated battle in the Scottish Highlands in the late fourteenth century. Derryth is a member of a Scottish laird’s family being sent from her sister’s home to avoid being caught up in a siege. While she and her protection are enroute they are captured by the enemy. But they aren’t hurt, they are merely detainted and pressed into service until the events unfold, for a number of reasons. But Cull is not the evil adversary Derryth has imagined, and she is not just some village girl on her travels- both have secrets- and a heated attraction to each other.
The plot thickens as other characters become involved, and secrets and lies begin to unravel. Cull and Derryth become enthralled with each other, despite the knowledge that their feelings for each other are disloyal to their people. Will they be able to overcome a multitude of barriers to have their hea?
This is a thoroughly entertaining historical romance for readers who enjoy intrigue and action with some heat. I would definitely recommend it.
