I’ve mentioned that I read A Hunger Like No Other (book2 of this series: Immortals After Dark) back when it first came out. I reread that book over the years 5 times before I got into the rest of this series (mid-may of this year).
I’ve been listening to these books on audiobook, and the narrator is phenomenal! Robert Petkoff. His character voice range is amazing.
So anyway…my strongest memory of this book is that I had started listening to it right after I’d gotten groceries. The groceries were all inside and the power went out. It was out for a good couple of hours. But instead of being annoyed that I couldn’t get on the internet, I had a book to listen to.
So I remember laughing (because Kresley Cole is pretty funny in places),and listening to this book while I was putting up groceries in the dark with a flashlight. It made an otherwise annoying evening very memorable and nice.
After that, I sat on the back porch and listened until the power came back on.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I began listening to this book. This is definitely a new subgenera of romance for me. I decided to read after the author, Sarah MacLean, recommended the series. It was a fun, and often funny, listen. Kresley Cole is a good writer. The listening time flew by and I was engaged in the story and interested in how it would turn out. i will listen to more of this series.
Man, this story was a freaking blast!
The mythical history created for this tale and for the journey of males like Wroth is incredibly interesting and I need more. Wroth, once a fearless and esteemed soldier, was resurrected to be a warrior in an honorable army of vampires. He and his comrades don’t really know much about their new existence, so when he comes across a being who might have some answers, he can’t help but be intrigued by her. It doesn’t hurt that Myst happens to be absolutely gorgeous.
Myst, a Valkyrie, was a female who had her own code of honor. Her own sense of justice. A bit selfish, a lot reckless, she had some murky motivations. However, she was a steady source of entertainment. While she was constantly underestimated, she was a powerful force and I loved how the author characterized her. She may have always had a soul and felt kinship and compassion for her sisters, it wasn’t until she found Wroth that she truly discovered her heart.
If it’s stories like this one that Kresley Cole has to offer, I’m ready to read them all!
This book is so good. I love the Immortals After Dark series and I read them a few years ago and as a reread I think it is even better. I found myself rediscovering small details and loving all the characters even more since I know some of the things that they go through in later books. I know technically this is a prequel to A Hunger Like No Other but I think you should read that one first because it does a better job of explaining things.
4.5 stars
This is the introductory novella to the Immortals After Dark series. I know what you’re thinking. Why am I reading the introductory story of a series AFTER I’ve already read the next six stories in the series when I’m such a “read in order” type of person? Well, I’m following the advice of experts. You may remember me saying in my review of the first book in this series, A Hunger Like No Other, that I had really gotten interested in reading these books when hearing about the Fated Mates podcast. These women actually started a podcast to discuss these books and recommended you not start with this story, but with book one instead. If they are that invested in this series, I think their advice holds some weight. And trust me when I tell you that I am absolutely glad I waited on this one. As usual, they were right.
I really hate spoilers. Although this story doesn’t have spoilers in the typical sense, there are some hints that could have given some things away about future books in the series. Plus, I absolutely would not have wanted to read what I consider this book’s mate with too much time between. But we’ll get to that later.
Nikolai and Myst have off the charts chemistry. There is no denying their connection, so it threw me for a loop when Myst was acting as though this was just another mission for her. And even more so when her sisters arrived for her “rescue” and she continued to play the aloof heroine. To be fair, she had every reason to mistrust and even taunt Nikolai given what his plans had been for her. But she sure gave good face to her act of not caring she was leaving Nikolai behind.
There is so much mistrust between Myst and Nikolai that it is a wonder they ever spoke their thoughts aloud to one another. Of course, not the thoughts they should have been speaking. As usual, so many things in this relationship could have been resolved with an open and frank conversation. But what fun would that be?
This is going to sound crazy since I’m talking about a 300 year old vampire, but there is a certain innocence to Nikolai. That’s because the rest of the lore mistrusts the vampires and the Forbearers are humans turned vampire so have no prior knowledge of the lore. Nobody is sharing information with them. It’s not only Nikolai’s ignorance of the lore, but the fact that he hasn’t moved on with the times. In other words, he still acts as though he’s in the 1700’s at times.
It was fun to see strong, beautiful, unshakable Myst find her match. As much fun as it was to see Nikolai learn the real way of the world while finding his own flaws and trying to fix them.
This book ties directly into book 7 of this series, Untouchable. I strongly recommend you have that book ready to go when you finish this one. I found I wanted to read Murdoch’s story as soon as I finished this book.
This is another reread as I’ve decided to read this series again it’s a paranormal novella but actually quite a decent length.
Myst the coveted is a Valkyrie Nicolai Wroth is a turned vampire Myst’s kings mortal enemy when he finds her in the dungeons of his enemy’s stronghold he is instantly drawn to her.
When she bloods him making his heart beat for the first time as a vampire along with some other perks he is determined to possess her.
Myst has other ideas leaving him behind but alive Wroth will follow her to the ends of the earth to get her back into his possession.
This was a good introduction to the series as a whole it’s sexy and well written and was also enjoyable.
It’s a bit instalove and the length does work against it slightly saying that I would still recommend this and I’m looking forward to diving back into this whole series.

An outstanding paranormal romance with wit, whimsy, and warriors.
Ruthless vampire general, Nikolai Wroth has no idea what he’s in for when he captures his enemy’s castle. Down in the dungeon is a beautiful, yet mad female. One thing is for certain, his life will never be the same.
Myst the Coveted, Valkyrie extraordinaire avidly follows the movements of the sexy warrior as he plows through his enemies. But when he takes the castle putting a wrench in her plans for the previous owner, she’s a bit put out. Being one to easily adapt. She calls alters her plans to find out all she can from the warlord. After all, a vampire is a vampire, and none can withstand her charms.
Assumptions, preconceived ideas, and prejudices are only a few of the obstacles these two have to overcome. Luckily, Wroth has lickable abs and scars Myst finds sexy. While Myst might be mad, but so mouthwatering Wroth can’t get her out of his mind. The back and forth between these two is hilarious, lusty, and heartwarming.
I was completely enthralled from beginning to end and can’t wait to dive into the next book.
I love this series so much that.
If you’re a fan of supernatural, steamy couples, bad boys and tough girls then you’ll have an amazing time reading this.
Love this all the books in this series!
Vampires and Valkyries, an interesting mix, but the story starts out a little slow. Be little patient with first quarter of the story as the rest is filled with romance, action and interesting turning points.

After reading her ‘The Game Maker’ series and becoming completely enthralled with it, I wanted to check out her other series. This is the 1st book of her ‘Immortals After Dark’ series.
I liked it, but can’t say I loved it.
It was very well written. I think it was the flow of the story that took it down a notch for me. However, it still wet my appetite for her books.
So yes, I am going for book 2 in this series while I eagerly await book 3 in the ‘Game Maker’ series.
I am also going to check the 1st book of her other Adult series.
Originally, in 2010, when I started reading the Immortals After Dark series I read The Warlord Wants Forever in the Anthology Playing Easy Get, which included Authors Jaid Black and Sherrilyn Kenyon. Now in 2019 I finally got a chance to listened to the first novella in the series and I’m glad I dived back into Nikolai’s and Myst’s story this way instead of reading it. I’ll keep bragging about Robert Petkoff because he is a friggin’ amazing narrator.
This novella may not have been one of my favorite of the series, but it’s still dear to my heart since it’s the first novella that had some world building that introduced some other characters that would get their books in the series. I also realized that Nikolai and Myst didn’t really like each other at first, well, Myst didn’t like Nikolai. She really wasn’t very fond of vampires because this is when Valkyrie were still killing them. When Nikolai first meets Myst in the book he finds her locked up and he’s actually trying to figure out what kind of creature she is because he’s never come across someone like her before. Myst knows who he is because he remembers from his battles.
Here is one thing that bothered me in the book and that’s how Nikolai basically keeps Myst locked up, when he realizes who she is to him and tries to keep her away from her family. No lover boy, you cannot do that to a valkyrie. She loves her family too much and let’s not forget her family loves her. They are dangerous creatures and since you have no clue what they are capable of, you will definitely find out. I will say this Nikolai’s brother even tells him he needs to rethink what he has done in the book.
There are some steam in the book, but there is a part in the book where Nikolai basically can’t take it anymore with Myst running away from him. I won’t go into any much detail with it. I really did enjoy the book, but Nikolai’s and Myst’s connection wasn’t what enthralled me. It was the other items in the book that did.
There is drama in the book that the vampires are dealing with and of course there is drama that the valkyries are dealing with in the story. Readers will even get some sneak peak into Sebastian’s story, which is after this one.
If you have not read the Immortal After Dark series this is where you should start reading. I decided to read out of order because I’ve already read the series and wanted to read the novellas back to back and, then pick up book 9 after the novellas. Now onto the next novella in the series.
Story Rating: 4 stars
Steaminess Rating: 3 stars
Standalone or part of series: Part of the Immortals After Dark series. This book I decided to read out of order with the other novella (Book 8 in the series). You can read in order or out of order.
Do I recommend this book? Yes.
Will I read other books from the author? Yes. She’s one of my auto-buy favorite authors.
Tropes/Elements: Fated Mates.
Hero: Vampire
Heroine: Valkyrie
This is the first in the Immortals After Dark series. It’s bonkers and I loved it. It hooked me immediately. If you like hot, steamy scenes, with alphas males, and characters who happen to be vampires, valkyries, demons, werewolves, elves, and all other sorts of fantastical characters, this series is for you.
This book was terrible and crazy and hilarious and I FREAKING LOVED IT. Starting it was like being thrown into a tornado because I had no idea what was going on, but Myst the sassy Valkyrie kept me hooked. I loved how fierce she was and her sense of humor was top notch. The plot of this book is insane, but it’s also a romance novel and I’m here for the cheap thrills. I’m also really intrigued by this universe! Never in my life have I read anything about the Valkyrie and all the other creatures had a new spin to them that was refreshing. I’m already excited to read more outrageous stories about these characters.
↬ FINAL WORD
This was hilarious, both intentionally and unintentionally. If you love the cheap romantic thrills like I do, this is a great, fun read.
I devoured this entire series.

Review:
I’m not sure what to think about this book. I was warned that it wasn’t that good by a friend of mine and that the rest of the series was way better. And it’s not that I hated this book or thought it was bad, because it isn’t. But it didn’t blow my mind either. It was decent but it lacked something and I’m not sure what. I didn’t particularly liked Myst. She was all over the place and I had trouble connecting with her. Same for Wroth, although he was more settled than Myst there where things I didn’t like about him but over all I like him more than I did Myst.
I’ll give the second book a try to see if it improves or not.

Love this series!!!
I have read and listened to this book several times now and it’s still one of my favourites. The story is fun, hot, light-hearted, romantic and thoroughly entertaining. It got me hooked right away and it still, after a few years now, has the power to excite. I recently found out that the audiobook was re-done with Robert Petkoff as narrator. I can’t praise this man’s talent enough. He does the PERFECT interpretation of Cole’s writing. Especially when it’s about working out the humourous side of conversations and situations. If you haven’t read this series yet: I do recommend it highly. Start with this book, either in written or audible format. Both versions are fantastic.
This is an interesting new take on paranormal beings. I’ve heard it only gets better so I am excited. The differences between these vampires and others I’ve read about are very intriguing. I love the thought of them having one “soul mate” so to speak that they must try to find. I’ve never read a book with Valkyries before so that was a change too.
