As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise — demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards — symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile. It was not always this way. Once, men … and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Together, they will stand against the night.

Fantasy books are my preferred form of reading material and every once in a while a fantasy book comes along that makes me stand up and cheer.
The Warded Man (The Painted Man) by Peter V. Brett is just such a book.
This is great fantasy storytelling.
The tales begins simply enough with Arlen, a small eleven-year-old boy living on a farm, …
The story started off slow for me, but once I get a few chapters in I was totally hooked. Loved the characters and oh my gosh, the world! Great story and an amazingly built, original world.
A well written, gritty, story. Well developed characters with a rough edge. A good fantasy world without the overly idealized characters that you often find in a fantasy story.

I read this one in 2011.
Very cool dark fantasy. The world, once dominated by high technology, has been overrun by demons. The handful of survivors hold off the demons by rediscovering magic from the past, in the form of wards. But the wards need constant maintenance, and any mistake or weathering could let the demons in.
After centuries like …
Loved this series, well written and executed
The Warded Man (Demon Cycle #1) by Peter V. Brett is a terrifying and character driven book that keep me turning pages with reluctant glee! It was like watching a movie with your hand over your face but peaking through your fingers at the tv screen! I
This crazy world could be in a very distant future from ours. At night, different types of demons …
No politics, no explicit sex, just the best of fantasy.
I can’t think of a more sexist or misogynistic book that also glosses over the rape of women. You should read the 1 star reviews on Amazon before you consider this book. I bought this off of Book Bub and have since deleted it from my library.
An excellent first book in an excellent series!
Love the series
Good read. Not sure I want to continue the series but this one was good
If this site had a “not recommended” option, or I could give this book zero stars, I would choose both because I wish I could unread this book. The premise is moderately original at best, and it’s full of racist and misogynistic tropes, like a female character who is gang raped and then falls into the arms of the hero like nothing happened five …
One of my good friends has been trying to get me to read The Warded Man for well over a year now.
I’m ashamed it took me this long to get to it.
As I’ve been thinking about this book, one word that keeps coming to my mind is “heartfelt.” The Warded Man is both epic and dark, detailing the struggles of humanity as it fights for survival against a …
I’m so obsessed with this book oh my gosh!! I used to be a giant fan of kick ass fantasy stories, but my love for them died over the last year as I continuously read mediocre high fantasies that all seemed the same. The Warded Man just re-inspired my love for fantasy, this is literally everything you would be looking for in a classic fantasy …
I enjoyed this book so much that I went on to order the next on & will read to the end of the series. Love it.
One of the top 10 fantasy series. I am a voracious book reader so that is saying a lot
This book was a lot of fun for me. I enjoyed the character development and all the action. It was a might good yarn.
Loved the series altho I’ve yet to read The Core. This book is totally different from any book I’ve read. It’s fun, has adventure and action, demons, and it’s just a fun book series to read.
First in an outstanding, highly original series that doesn’t start feeling a little old until the fourth book or so. Highly recommend.
