Great read for not only the historical perspective but also life in Tuscany. Characters were well written and looking forward to next installment.
WW1 in Lucca, Italy tells a heartbreaking yet inspiring and hopeful story. While there have been many stories of WW1, most deal with the atrocities perpetrated on the people by the nazis. This story involves the people of Lucca and the period during and after the war and the tensions between the classes that help to create the climate that leads to the fascist movement in Italy which will carry into WW11
This is a great story about the hardships of war lasting many years after the war ended.
I keep trying to understand the mindset of people who went through Hitler’s take-over and each book adds a little insight. I enjoyed the story and the information about the town of Lucca. Wish I had read it before I visited.
Compelling. I could hardly put it down loved the Italian culture
I loved the characters and their personalities. It was also a very heartwarming story of goodness surrounded by evil.
Engaging. Well-written. Full of history. Depicts a tumultuous Italy with an understanding and sympathetic lens.
Having been Lucca I loved “walking” the city the wall.
This was a wonderful book. In a world where so many authors seem determined to present the worst human reactions anyone could imagine, this was a compelling and uplifting story. The tension was palpable. The main characters were exceptional and definitely worth emulating!!
I really liked the different perspective of WWII and the characters
Read the first book and immediately started reading this book to continue the relationship I felt with the characters. Always looked forward to time I could spend with this story.
A unique story with wonderful mental images of Italy and Italian wine makers
Historical fiction that covers war, love and faith with a diverse cast of characters.
Explored WWll era, realistic, and exciting. Rooting for the characters to succeed. Written from true-life character activities. Gained insight of war activities.
Well developed characters, pulls you into their lives; spent some time in Lucca a year ago, makes it especially meaningful.
Great historical fiction about Italy between the two World Wars Takes place in the walled city of Luca
Lucca is one of my favorite cities. It was fun to visit the city all over again in a novel.
I liked it well enough to want to read the next in the series.
The Walls of Lucca is a very exciting story, taking place in Italy before and during WW1. Isabella a young girl who has so much love for everyone was raised in an Orphanage. Everyone in the town knows and loves this girl, the life she lives through is often tragic but through it all Isabella never loses her faith and love for all. The story tells so much of the tragic history that happened to this family and to Italy. The second book Above the Walls is even more action paced and you never know know what is going to happen until it happens.
I really enjoyed this book. It gave you a little taste of what the fighters of WWI had to endure. It made you conscious of horror of war and how the unprivileged fight ridiculous wars for the greed of the rich and powerful. It had characters that exemplified the best and worst in people.
