Henrietta Maybury at first had great expectations of a perfect season and making a perfect match. Four months later and the marriages of her older sisters, Henrietta’s changed her mind. She wants to marry for love. An unexpected encounter with a stranger at the theater over a dog leaves a lasting impression.
Sydney Cromarty is a smuggler. The captain of his own ship and the heir of the Earl of Silford, he doesn’t want the title, but he does want Henrietta.
Excisemen, a cruel suitor, spies for England, an older man in love with a younger lady, the Hart Inn once again weaves it’s magic. I recommend reading this series in order. A well written book that flows nicely with continuous action and a passionate romance during Napoleon’s war.
I’m enjoying The Unmarriageable series very much, and this one was no exception. It starts with a rescued puppy (you had me at “he helps her rescue a puppy”), then a young lady wishing for adventure and encountering a mysterious smuggler, her puppy rescuer.
It has elements I love: Regency, smuggler, adventure and a puppy! But it was also well-written and well paced. I feared about 3/4 of the way in that the heroine was going to have TSTL moment but she pulled herself out of it quickly and the adventure continued. I’m also looking forward to reading the next book in the series since if features a secondary character from earlier, a woman who seems made for adventure and intrigue.
The Vulgar Heart is a good fit for those who want a traditional Regency with a not-especially-graphic wedding night scene. Ms. Lancaster continues to bring to her stories much of what drew me to Regency Romance from the very beginning of my love for this Romance genre.
Gripping and Suspenseful! I love when a book grips me and takes me on a heart stopping journey as in The Vulgar Heart. Mary Lancaster weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, abduction, and mystery. It’s an unforgettable romance that brims with tension-building twists and turns, remarkable emotions, characters that are well thought out and you find yourself drawn into their story, clever, witty and funny banters and with one fantastic plot. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly. Sydney, a bad boy smuggler, meets Henrietta, the hoyden of her family, embark on dangerous adventures that will spark the heart and passions in this fast paste romance filled with drama, deciet, greed, uncertainties and with forces trying to them apart. It is so enjoyable to read stories that are all truly individual to the character and revisiting characters from the first to novels. Mary has outdone herself with this novel that is a must read!
Henrietta Maybury is much younger than Captain Sydney Cromarty who runs a smuggling operation as a cover for the work he does for the Crown. He is also heir to an Earl but the relationship is estranged. Henrietta’s family adds much to the story, especially her younger brothers, including humor. Lots of adventure and great fun, this is terrific read.
What’s not to love about a notorious smuggler who appears as an upstanding businessman and is soon to hold the title of Earl? Not a lot that a woman can resist and Henrietta is finding that out as she spends an impulsive evening where she should not have been.
All she wanted was to find a man to marry that would show she can attract a peer just as well as her sisters. But she becomes attracted to Captain Sydney, a man of business, that just will not do! Yet the more she spends time with him, the more fascinated she becomes! Because all is not as it seems.
Mary Lancaster does it again with this amazing series that has pulled me in from the first story. She creates such intriguing characters and storylines that bring out her magical prosaic writing which makes me look forward to every book she pens.
Prepare to be entrhralled as the story unfolds and there is little hope these two can resist each other!!
I have never read a book by Mary Lancaster that I didn’t love & this one is right at the top of the list! It had some humorous moments, some laugh out loud scenes, some wanted attractions, some unwanted attractions, kidnapping, suspense, strong heroine and a hero who had everything you love in a romantic novel plus a story I will remember for a long time!
Henrietta aka Henrie is our lovely, kind, bored debutante, adventure seeking heroine – her rescue dog Minnie & her siblings will entertain you throughout the book with their antics. Sydney Cromarty is secretive, a ship captain, smuggler, handsome, rich & had cut all ties with his only living relative- his grandfather, an Earl. Sydney is his heir but wants nothing to do with him or his title. The witty banter between Sydney & Henrie were hilarious, along with Henrie’s forward questions & comments. All of this was an attempt to hide the attraction that both of them wee feeling.
I highly recommend this book & the series to all historical romance readers – Mary Lancaster will pull you in to the story with the words she weaves & you will fall in loves with her main & secondary characters.
Loved this tale of the rather impetuous Lady Henrietta and Captain Sydney Cromarty, the unwilling heir to an earldom.
The two meet as a result of Henrietta’s acceptance of a dare from a childhood friend in which she dresses up as a man and goes into a local tavern at night. The escapade necessitates their rescue with the assistance of the most attractive Captain. Thus begins a series of events filled with intrigue, action, humor, and a cast of interesting characters that makes this book so difficult to put down. It is a truly romantic adventure with
These two although different in age and station, are perfect for each other. The heat and humor make this a thoroughly entertaining read. I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed reading this book!!
You meet Miss Henrietta Maybury
and Sydney Cromarty, the grandson of an Earl but his father was disowned because he married a cit.
Sydney was not welcomed by the ton but he was rich and captain of his own ship.
So much happens that I didn’t want to stop reading.
I have enjoyed all of Mary Lancaster’s books. I think this should be a must read book.
Lots of different events that happen that it would take too long to tell!
Henrietta Maybury is bored, so bored that she agrees to go to theater with her family. But it is so hot, she steps out to cool off and sees a small skinny puppy hiding in the lobby. As she attempts to reach the puppy, she starts to fall head first down the stairs. She is rescued by Captain Sydney Cromarty, a son of a banker and a notorious smuggler, or so the gossip goes. Mary Lancaster has written this wonderful series, with likable characters, a sense of mystery, rancorous bad villains, a blooming romance and a Grandfather trying to make amends with his heir, before he dies. This is a brilliant read and one you will not want to put down.
