I’m one of those people who can usually figure out who the bad guy is before they’re revealed. One of the things I love about Dean Koontz is that he can still surprise me.
One of the best books to illustrate foreshadowing I’ve ever read. Every time I thought I knew where it was going, it threw me. Just before the ending, I did figure out some of it, but it has an amazing twist that hit me right between the eyes.
This was the book that started my love of Mr. Koontz’ books.
The Vision is one of the first books I read by Dean Koontz. Because the first two books I read were horror novels, Watchers and Winter Moon, I was surprised when this one turned out to be suspense instead. But I wasn’t completely surprised because the summary gave me fair warning. Yes, the edition I read was a newer paperback edition with the cover shown here. But I got a good idea of the plot the same way anyone who buys these newer paperback editions of some of his older books might: On the back cover, a simple sentence describes part of the plot in an effort to make it sound sinister: “In this terrifying novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz reveals the darkness in a woman’s mind—and the killer lurking there…” Sounds creepy, right? Like something any fan of really scary mystery and suspense would want to read? Well, when you open up the book, right before you get to the title page, a more detailed plot summary makes the book sound even better: “DON’T CLOSE YOUR EYES He’s watching you. He knows what you’re doing. He knows what you’re thinking. He’s coming after you. DON’T CLOSE YOUR EYES He has a knife. The steel blade gleams. Whenever you close your eyes, you can see it—the tip of his knife, pointing at your chest. DON’T CLOSE YOUR EYES He’s closing them for you.” That description doesn’t give you much of an idea of the story’s plot, does it—other than informing you in a subtle, creepy way that it’s about a killer. Well, folks, maybe that’s because publishers knew that readers themselves could do that in customer reviews and reader reviews, particularly readers who like the book. Obviously, that’s where I come in. The Vision is about Mary, a psychic who helps the police catch serial killers. But what happens when she sees one shot to death right in front of her… only to later be plagued by horrible, violent visions of hideous murders that convince her that he has somehow returned from the dead? Most likely, readers will suspect what her husband and brother already believe to be the truth—that this “supernatural” menace is really a living, breathing, flesh-and-blood killer. Surprisingly, Koontz does a good job providing clues and haunting incidents that suggest the more supernatural explanation could be the real one. So, is this psychopath just an ordinary murderer… or the ghost of another predator who wasn’t ready to stop having fun? If it’s just a human killer, who is it? The answer will surprise you. While this was a good story throughout, which is not surprising since it was written by Dean Koontz, the suspense really kicks into high gear right in the middle of the book, when a psychic vision of a horrifying future crime suddenly, out of nowhere, turns the plot into a ticking time bomb! And as the suspense becomes unbearable, the story races to a harrowing climax you’ll never forget! I should know! I sure didn’t! Enjoy!
