ANTHONY’S STORY
This time the gossip columnists have it wrong. London’s most elusive bachelor Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry—he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended’s older sister, Kate Sheffield—the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate’s the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams…
Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands—and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate’s determined to protect her sister—but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony’s lips touch hers, she’s suddenly afraid she might not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself…

I’ll be the first to admit that the TV show got me hooked and interested in the books. And though I did enjoy the first book, the second is unique because not much of it has been shown already in the series. I’ll be really interested though to see what the next show will feature since we’ve already seen the singer mistress in the show in season 1, but none of Anthony’s other exploits. Like the first, this story focuses on Anthony and his quest to find himself the perfect wife, but it has a hint of Pride & Prejudice in the characters which makes it interesting. It’s a bit frustrating we still don’t have any hint to Lady Whistledown, but considering there are 8 books in the series, we have plenty more to go. There’s just as much scandal as the first book which also drives the reader to devour it as fast as possible.
Anthony and Kate may well be my new favorite book couple. I absolutely adored them from the first snarky exchange to the last. Their banter was hilarious and built the tension superbly. I can’t imagine loving another book in this series more than this one. It was perfect.
I absolutely LOVED Kate but my god I struggled so much with Anthony. The man can be a true dumbass. He did grow on me as the book progressed, but mostly because I loved Kate and therefore in order for her to be happy I too had to come to like Anthony. Overall though, I did really enjoy the book and it definitely had a very addictive quality and the last little bit of the book was incredibly sweet. I also ADORED the second epilogue. That was laugh out loud funny.
Even better than the first, I loved Anthony and Kate! There was some anxiety/PTSD type rep, which I’m there for, and I loved their banter and chemistry. Will definitely be continuing on with the series
I love historical romance. I also love a good enemies to lovers romance. The banter between Anthony and Kate is so perfect. I laughed so much reading this book. I cannot wait to read more in this series.
I loved me some Kate! I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Anthony, but I fell in love with him too. I am loving this series and the way it was written. We all know rogues aren’t my thing, but I fell in love with Anthony anyways. Kate’s sassiness took the prize in this one though.
Anthony and Kate have become my favorite main characters in the Bridgerton series. They get to know each other as Anthony courts Kate’s sister Edwina. The realistic qualities in the book of each other’s anxiety over areas of their lives and how they cope through it was a welcomed representation. It helped someone on the outside looking in to have a better understanding. Julia Quinn writes likeable characters full of wit and humor with each other. I find myself laughing out loud when reading this series.
Emotional and funny!
Anthony Bridgerton is determined not to fall in love with whoever he picks to wed. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? Then he meets Kate, who is guarding her sister Edwina’s virtue against the rakes of the ton. Anthony has met his match in Kate after he decides Edwina is just the sort of woman to take to wife.
I don’t have Netflix and so I haven’t seen Bridgerton but the hype about it brought me to Julia Quinn’s Amazon page and as the second book was discounted I thought I would give it a try.
I certainly wasn’t disappointed. I enjoyed the family element and teasing between siblings, the humour and was pleased that the bedroom scenes took place after marriage which seems more historically accurate than many of the books set in this period. Anthony might have been a rake but has redeeming features and Kate’s witty sarcasm is a delight.
I did find it disappointing that a story that was first published in 2015 has not been updated to remove typos though.
Audiobook: Narrator – Rosalyn Landor
What an amazing narration! Ms. Landor was exceptional with each character giving them their own unique tone and cadence. She brought this story to life in a way that, in my experience, isn’t easily found, especially in romance audios. I experienced the same in the previous audio and once again found myself so absorbed, I chose to listen to this long after the time I usually turn it off.
I found this story to be almost, but not quite, as good as the first book. However, it still beats so many other books that I have listened/read and loved in the past.
There was quite the sizzle and spark between Anthony and Kate as they battled each other. I love a good enemies-to-lovers story and this one was wonderful. I couldn’t get enough of this couple and by the time the paille-maille game concluded, I was rolling with laughter and absolutely in love with Kate.
I was concerned I wouldn’t like Anthony when I realized he would be courting Kate’s sister, but being allowed into this thoughts made it all the better as I could see what his real feelings were. I may not have loved him as much as Simon, but he came very close to it.
I absolutely loved this! It was incredibly entertaining with hilariously witty and challenging banter, I loved the verbal sparring between Anthony and Kate! Their back and forth was perfection.
Book 8 towards my goal of 240! 5/5 stars for this Regency Romance! I’m just going to say it, I may have liked Anthony’s story more than Daphne’s! But, they’re very close for sure! Such a great continuation into the Bridgerton family saga! Can’t wait to see who we follow in book 3! Such a fun book! Highly recommend!
I’m in love. truly, madly, deeply in love with this books.
So I fell in the Bridgerton rabbit hole. I kept hearing about the show and I succumbed to curiosity and watched with my mom. Yes I got her obsessed too. So naturally I got myself the books.
First I have to say that yes the books are not exactly like the series and even though the series is amazing I have to say the books are even better. Loved the writing style, the wit and sass. I’m not particularly a fan of historical romance but this books are more of a romantic comedy that happens to be historical.
I loved the fact that you can read them as a standalone novel. But I’m certainly enjoying reading them back to back.
Simon and Daff’s book is beautiful I loved the characters, the banter and the sexiness I wasn’t so sure about Anthony’s book but once I started it I couldn’t put it down. I’m slowly but surely falling in love with all the Bridgerton siblings and I can’t wait to read all of their stories.
Kate so far has been my favorite character that doesn’t mean I didn’t loved Daff, I just connected more with Kate. I can’t believe I finally found an author that made me enjoy historical romance. So yeah I’m going to go through her backlist and read them all.
I just want to take a moment to mention Newton the corgi, I don’t know if I want one or I would run for my life at the sight of one. He’s trouble but adorable.
Guys if you have the chance you need to pick this series up. It won’t disappoint I promise.
Absolutely 5 STARS!
Loved it!
Yes, please! And more! Fans of NETFLIX’s BRIDGERTON Series should RUN, not walk, to the next book in the series. This is the story of Anthony and Kate – a beautifully crafted enemies, to friends, to lovers’ story and so much more. I loved the message of living life to the fullest with the one person that makes you complete. You’ll be enchanted by the lovely characters, witty banter, and deliciously seductive Mr. Bridgerton. Ms. Quinn expertly places you in the front seat of the roller coaster of this extraordinary love story, not letting up until the final scene that will make your heart sing. My next read? Book 3
I am officially in love with the Bridgertons. This family is too much fun to read.
From the sibling teasing to the vicious game of Pall Mall (which bears a strong resemblance to cricket), I learned more about this fascinating family.
Anthony, I have to say, is an intriguing character. Though his thinking made me want to pop him upside his head, I got where he was coming from. I thought his chemistry with Kate was apparent immediately.
I just binged the Netflix series Bridgerton, and I luckily read the first book before I watched the series. Though I like the series, I’m hoping they continue to keep to the base of the stories going forward. I get that they have to fill in to create enough episodes, but I hope they keep in certain scenes.
Two of my favorite scenes from this book are:
1) Newton and the lake- fellow readers, you know of what I speak. If you don’t, read again.
2) Garden Bee attack- this one had me howling with laughter
I am beginning to see the draw that is Bridgerton. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
I enjoyed this a whole lot. I now this series is getting a lot more attention now thanks to the TV show, and I feel like the series (or what I’ve read of it) holds up more than a lot of other stories of the time, even regarding “the scene” in book 1. But with regards to TVWLM, I didn’t know what to expect from Kate. And as it turns out I liked her a LOT. Anthony…I was hesitant because..he just didn’t endear himself to me as quickly as I would like. In saying that…I did enjoy their romance a lot and I loved the banter between Anthony and Kate a whole lot. I’m not going to take so long before I pick up another book in this series…I hope.
After being told the books in the series got better after the first one I decided to give them another chance. Alas, I’m still disappointed. I’ve never been a massive fan of ‘two people are absolutely horrible to each other but it’s fine because they’re secretly in love’ trope and coupled with the ridiculous and overblown melodramatics from the main characters, I nearly abandoned this book halfway through. I shan’t spoil anything but suffice to say the incident with the bee that occurs halfway through the book was so completely and utterly stupid that I think I lost a few brain cells reading it. Hopefully the Netflix version is better!
Loved the book. Hate that Netflix has the very likely potential to ruin the story.
Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton has decided it’s time he settled down and got married. He’s gone so far as to select a wife. Unfortunately, the lady’s elder sister, one Miss Kate Sheffield, has taken him into dislike and is determined to prevent the match. Anthony is furious at the interference, but it’s Kate who increasingly features in his thoughts and dreams.
Kate doesn’t believe a reformed rake would make a good husband and is determined to keep her sister from being hurt. Too bad it’s her own heart that’s in danger. As she comes to know the real Anthony behind the bad reputation, she realizes she may have been wrong about him, but she won’t stand in the way of her sister’s happiness even though she’s developing feelings for the rake herself.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but Anthony really had to grown on me and he’s still not my favorite hero. I loved the ridiculous lightness and humor of this book, but Anthony’s questionable behavior for much of it meant that it took a while for me to get into it. The Bridgerton family was utterly charming as a whole and made me wish I were a part of it. When Anthony finally opened his eyes to his feelings, he wound up being quite sweet and he and Kate were lovely as a couple. It was delightful to see that Kate gave Anthony no quarter and that made their relationship work. I wish he’d had to do a bit more to make up for his previously terrible behavior, but perhaps that wouldn’t have fit the lightness of the rest of the book. The sisterly bond between Kate and Edwina was also very sweet and refreshingly angst-free. I wound up enjoying this book overall, but there were definitely times when it just didn’t grab me or I couldn’t be bothered to deal with Anthony and so I opted to listen to something else instead. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to Benedict’s book. We haven’t seen much of him so far and I’m hoping he’s a hit.
