Beautiful writing!
Wow. I have finished the entire series and I’m sitting here numb with amazement and eagerly hoping that Ava Devlin has another book coming out soon. I decided to give her books a try & wow…I am so glad that I did! I started with the Viscount and the Vixen & could not put it down. I then binge-read the prequel & other 2 books in the series. I decided to wait and read the prequel before the last book since it primarily showcases the characters from the 3rd book (The Hero and the Hellion). It was merely a personal preference. To say I am impressed with this series is an understatement.
Instead of reviewing this book in particular, I want to review her writing in general. I am placing the review with the first in this series, in hopes that I might convince readers who have stumbled upon this author & are deciding whether to try the series…to just do it! You won’t regret it.
We often read about characters who experience love at first sight, but are hesitant…”Is this real? Am I being silly? Is it too soon?” Folks, that’s how I feel about Ms Devlin’s work I just found her. I just read 3 of her books. I have read hundreds & hundreds of HR novels. Is this real? Is it too soon? How can I possibly feel as though she ranks in my top 5 favorite authors?? Because her writing is just that beautiful. Period. It is truly beautiful. You are drawn in & feel as if you are an additional character, secretly watching the story unfold. You become attached to these characters & emotionally invested in their lives, never wanting the story to end. The love scenes are steamy & the dialogue is beautiful. Ms Devlin is certainly an author to follow! I am so excited to read future books!
Bravo Ava Devlin!! You have a lot to be proud of & I am so glad I stumbled upon you! I eagerly await your next book!
I really enjoyed this book. Rose comes to London to help her cousin Gloriana with her first season only to find that Gloriana has been promised long ago by her father. And to top it off, it is the man rose has cared about for years. Gloriaiana wants nothing to do with him. rose comes to the rescue and solves the problem. I love how this story develops and the characters grow.
This one’s truly worth it!
A really excellent book. Good story. Endearing characters. The MC’s are caring people who treat each other well. There may possibly be a few anachronistic terms and exclamations, but oh joy! What a grammatically clean read. One name gets switched Rutherford for Reginald, one time. But otherwise, this book is perfection! The writing is smooth and purely lovely.
A far superior read to most of what’s available. Extremely enjoyable. Highly recommend!
Miss Rose d’Aubrey has been twice engaged – and twice her fiancee has died. Now the “Deadly Deb” is a companion for her young cousin, Gloriana, making her debut. On the eve of her ball, her father informs Gloriana of a long standing marriage contract with Gideon, Viscount Somers. The Somers family has been plagued with scandal and Gideon (so proper) is determined to turn to respectability, especially with his young sister unmarried and pregnant! A union with Gloriana will help – except she wants no part of any marriage now, she is set on enjoying the season! When Rose intervenes at her cousin’s request, Gideon proposes she run away with him and elope in Scotland! Rose, with a bleak future in front of her, jumps at his suggestion and the two set off on an adventure with friendship and true love at its end! Enjoyable romance of a new author – I can’t wait to read the next book of the series!!
4.5 stars rounded up.
Rose d’Aubrey has been engaged twice, only to have her prospective grooms perish before the wedding day. She’s since become gossip fodder and has come to terms with her fate as a spinster and is serving her family in the role of companion to her young cousin during her London debut. But when her cousin is told she’ll be having a hasty wedding to a rich viscount, rather than the season she’s always dreamed of, Rose has to manage her family and come up with a solution to get her cousin out of this situation.
Lord Gideon, Viscount Somers, wants nothing more than to reestablish the good reputation of his family which his father destroyed. He never imagined Rose would wind up back in his life, especially given her frequent appearance in gossip rags, but she’s the only woman he’s ever wanted. With a secret weighing on him, hastening his need to return home to Yorkshire, and a prospective intended who doesn’t even wish to meet him, he’s no longer able to ignore his draw toward Rose and strikes a deal with her instead. An impulsive elopement sees Rose and Gideon learning about each other in an enclosed world of their own, but their newfound connection also has to survive the strain meeting his family is about to cause.
This was such a strong debut. I loved the fast pace and the unique, madcap plotting. This was a bit like a second chance story for Gideon, who had always admired Rose from afar. For Rose, it was a chance to escape her overbearing mother but also to see a man she knew as a friend in an entirely different light. Gideon definitely had his moments of sheer male idiocy, but he redeemed himself well. I did feel that the ending was a bit rushed, and I would’ve liked to have had perhaps one more scene featuring a heart to heart between Gideon and Rose, but I still liked them as a couple, overall. I listened to this as a complimentary audiobook from the author and while the narrator’s voice wasn’t my favorite, I did appreciate her ability to create distinctive voices that helped me differentiate each character and pulled me more fully into the story. This was my first read from this author, but I hope to continue the series now.

4 1/2 Stars for adult Historical Romance! Book one in the Somerton Scandals series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone. The secondary characters will have their own books. Full length told in dual POV with HEA. I really liked Rose; she was absolutely perfect for Gideon. Just the right amount of steam with the story. The only thing missing was an epilogue!! I loved the book and will be continuing to the next in the series.
This was a very refreshing story, no whiny or deceitful women and no abusive men. Great characters who treat each other with respect and love. Fun story, I was excited to buy the next book in the series.

Rose is comical and an interesting character. She brings out the best in Gideon and his siblings. This is an excellent read.
You don’t have to, but the Somerton Scandals books are more fun to read in order
In the “Viscount and the Vixen” Rose has been betrothed twice before with each man dying before the wedding. She is helping her cousin Gloriana enjoy her first season but the girl is promised to the very proper Alex who secretly has been in love with Rose for years. Alex is a fresh male character who is stiffly awkward like a Jimmy Stewart and it takes Rose to make him laugh. This odd opposites make the story fun and fresh.
This book was such a fun and entertaining read. I finished it in two days and I can’t wait to read the next one.
Loved the Syrians and Ross’s come backs. Cute book.
Fast paced fresh plot which kept me reading. I enjoyed the book so much that I will read the other books in the series.
I enjoyed reading this book. It had several humorous parts. Rose is very witty and can hold her own against anyone. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the graphic love scenes. Those can be written about without going into graphic detail. Not that I am a “fuddy duddy”, I just enjoy a story without it; however, I did know by the reviews of the before I purchased the book that the book was written that way.
The descriptions in this book were wonderful and beautifully written. And even though it’s a shorter read, the author did a nice job of giving the characters depth. I really enjoyed the story.
I enjoyed this book.
romantic fiction. lords & Ladies
Very well written with realistic characters’ internal thinking and dialogue. Kudos for a first!
I liked all three of the books in the series. Tells a lot about the place of women during those times within a love story.
I really liked the female character. She was very well written. The book moved well. The only thing I would improve is that the book didn’t seem to be finished to me. I wish the author had continued on for a bit longer. Too many things were left unresolved.
