From #1 international bestselling author Ami McKay comes The Virgin Cure, the story of a young girl abandoned and forced to fend for herself in the poverty and treachery of post-Civil War New York City.
McKay, whose debut novel The Birth House made headlines around the world, returns with a resonant tale inspired by her own great-great-grandmother’s experiences as a pioneer of women’s medicine … pioneer of women’s medicine in nineteenth-century New York.
In a powerful novel that recalls the evocative fiction Anita Shreve, Annie Proulx, and Joanne Harris, Ami McKay brings to light the story of early, forward-thinking social warriors, creating a narrative that readers will find inspiring, poignant, adventure-filled, and utterly unforgettable.

Fascinating look at historical era one doesn’t always think about. I enjoyed it.
A very nice read !
Interesting side notes regarding habits, culture and events in early NYC
This was a good story, a little disturbing I guess due to the subject matter. The book illustrates what some women’s lives were like at that time in history.
Interesting historical topic. Formulaic.
Interesting historical fiction. Eye opening look at the treatment of poor women in this country in the 19th century.
Held my interest. Enjoy historical novels and this was very illuminating about an era in the U.S. not talked about often.
Very good book. Quite an eye opener.
A glimpse into a seldom explored time and culture.
An interesting story of poor girls’ options in the early 1900’s.
It was not to my liking \. Too sad that she had to go through so much sorrow in your young life.
Enjoyed the book.
Would not recommend. Too depresding.
Nicely written and very unpredictable and original. A pleasant change from the usual offer.
Excellent book… brought the times to life. Couldn’t put it down.
Awful
Ami McKay brings her books to life. I didn’t want to finish this.
This historical fiction gave me a deeper insight into the period and the difficulty of being a woman. The concept of a virgin-cure is disturbing! Thank you Ami McKay for these characters who tell “herstory”.
G
Entertaining period piece!
