At not quite fifteen, Stefan’s father finally let him board the longship Sja Vinna to take part in his first Viking raid. Yet, the battle was not at all what he expected, and he soon found himself alone and stranded in Scotland. Thirteen-year-old Kannak’s problem was just as grave. Her father deserted them and the only way to survive, she decided, was to take a husband over her mother‘s … mother‘s objections. Suddenly she was helping a hated Viking escape. Could Kannak successfully hide a Viking in the middle of a Scottish Clan? And why was someone plotting to kill the clan’s beloved laird?

17th Century setting of adventure, suspense and love delayed but fulfilled. Rated for readers age 14 and up, well written, easy read except for some uncommon Scottish names and terms. Tragedy mixed with humor.
I read it all in one day – I haven’t done that with a book IN YEARS. I was checking it out to see if I thought my middle schooler would like it and I simply cannot wait to have her read it. I know she’ll love it and she’ll get some history out of it too. I’m already reading the next book in the series!
I read one of Marti Talbott’s books, and ended up buying all of the books about the MacGreagor’s. I am not starting from the beginning and reading them in order.
Good story of period.
For a short while, I was transported to Medieval Scotland, with characters I love, a plot rife with clan intrigue, and an ending that tied all the loose ends neatly into a bow.
Slow plot development.
The book touched on many issues on how life in Scotland could have been like. It was not all bed and roses, work was hard. I thought slavery was brutal, to avoid being enslaved was a matter of life and death. Otherwise excellent. Thank you
Excellent!!
Probably the last of Uthred’s adventures, but it has been an entertaining journey….
This book seems as if it was written for teenagers. I didn’t care for it.
The story-line and emotional perspective are suitable for teen-age romance. Not recommended fo-r anyone over the age of 15. Lame, lame, lame.
Enjoyed the first book in the series and will be looking forward to reading the rest. Lots of Viking and Scot history and info. Enjoyed the language of the dialogue.
Fun and imaginative story
Well worth reading for both entertainment and for historical background. Great read. Try it, you’ll enjoy it for sure
This easy-to-read book was such a solid read with a very real story line. I don’t believe I have ever read another book about slavery in ancient societies other than ancient Rome. It was far more common than people realize. this book develops the love story very succinctly and steadily. Great read!
Hard to keep focused
Great read!
I think I’ve read every type of Scottish/Highlander story possible so decided to try something new, “Vikings”. Totally fascinated with them now. Their history ties in so closely with the very early Scottish people. That is why those Scottish “barbarians were such bruisers. So this is the story of how it all came about from the Vikings point of …
Predictable plot. Easy read.
not especially gripping, and very predictable
