Our family enjoys all of Eric Carle’s characters and stories. My personal favorite is, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. My son’s first birthday party was themed around this book. I read it to my soon aloud at the party while fighting back many rounds of tears. It truly is classic, hands-down must own a copy. I plan to store this book in his keepsake trunk when he grows a little olderThe Very Hungry Caterpillar .

So cute! A great simple way to teach counting, days of the week, and life cycle of a butterfly to preschoolers. My toddlers have all loved it.
Colorful; read it as a child and never forgot it. I want my children and nieces and nephews to read it.
Book Review
3+ of 5 stars to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a children’s picture book published in 1969 and written by Eric Carle. I am sure someone read this book to me as a very small child, but I know for certain that I had it on my shelf and looked through it around 10-years old. It’s a delight for all ages with the cute illustrations, the physical design of the book and the quirky personality of the caterpillar.
It’s a useful tool to teach young children how a caterpillar grows up, eats all the food around to get his/her nutrients, builds a cocoon and emerges as a butterfly. A wonderful science exhibit and activity to grown your own butterflies, it can be a hands-on teaching experience too. Lovely memories and great things come from it.
It gained in popularity again when George Bush mentioned it in a speech or interview. It’s also got a few readers torn up in knots. You see, the caterpillar eats too much and gets ill and overweight, but emerges as a beautiful butterfly. People read into it, thinking kids will eat so much and become obese and sickly.
I’ll probably be hated for my next comment, but seriously? Relax. I don’t think reading this book as a child will lead to such dire consequences. Wanna know why? Because if you’re a parent or guardian, read it to your kid and explain the whole story… talk about the process of nature and metamorphosis. Discuss eating habits. Explain what real beauty is. Talk about what foods are good and what foods are bad. Show how when you eat too much, you can get sick. Teach balance. But don’t hate on a book because it seems to say “eat what you want and you’ll be beautiful even when you’re sick.” Oh, and read it with a child. Don’t just put it in his/her hands and shove them out of the way. Make it an interactive experience so the right goals of the book are understood and accomplished.
Yikes, my reviews are getting more “animated” without even using GIFs. Off to get some lunch. Perhaps a box of cookies… I think I just learned that lesson reading some reviews on Goodreads about this book. Yum!
My grandsons favorite book he knows it by heart and owns several stuffed caterpillars in many sizes. We have to have all the caterpillars when reading or telling the story.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle – Ya’ll when I heard this man passed away it broke my heart! His literary legacy is generational! Enjoy this lovely story and its beautiful colors! Happy Reading!
The illustration in this book are so colorful and really draw the reader and those who listens to the book. This book also is great to read from infant to 99 years old. I love how they go through the life cycle of a caterpillar but in a cute story-line. I also love how they use counting throughout the book. This book is so cute and perfect for any bookshelf. We love having this book on ours. It’s such a cute book that our book is falling apart as it’s read so much.
Beginning readers love Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They love the repetition of the sentence, “But he was still hungry.” The book builds vocabulary and makes the children learn about healthy eating habits. Most of all, it shows the children the magic, mystery, and marvel of metamorphosis. On a symbolic level, it shows the struggling readers that they can become fluent readers. But they have to put in the effort – eat every day, read every day. This is a book that exemplifies the power of “not yet” and the power of the growth mindset long before Carol Dweck (2007) wrote about it. Certainly, children’s books like Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar coaxes and coaches children to become more than they are today!
My daughter really loved this book as a toddler, and I wholly recommend this to parents of small children. 1000%
One of those books that little kids love to hear & look at over & over. They love to hear how much food the caterpillar can eat. Makes them laugh!!
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” is a wonderful picture book that shows different stages of a butterfly development – from an egg to a caterpillar, to a butterfly. The illustrations and book formats are excellent – great artwork.
This is a classic and a necessity for every parent of a toddler. You will read it over and over and not really mind because it is such a great book!
