200 years after the world ends, their future begins. In 2157, a mysterious gas known as Variant spreads across the globe, killing or mutating most organic life. The surviving humans take refuge in an underground city, determined to return home. But after generations of failures and botched attempts, hope is beginning to dwindle. That is, until a young scientist makes a unique discovery–and … discovery–and everything changes. Suddenly, there’s reason to hope again, and it rests within a group of genetically engineered children that are both human and Variant.
Terry is one of these children, modified and trained to endure the harsh conditions of a planet he cannot begin to understand. After years of preparation, Terry thinks he knows what to expect. But the reality is far stranger than anything he can imagine–and what he will become is far more dangerous.
Read the series one Amazon reviewer Donald G. Simpson says: “This is one of the best put together science fiction books I have read in years. The character development is strong from start to finish. There are no loose ends or rabbit trails … everything ties together. The only regret I had in reading this book was when I looked and saw there were only eight pages left…I can’t wait to see if there is a follow up to this great start. You will not believe it is this author’s first book!”
The Variant Saga boxset includes all four books in the series.
1300+ pages. 1,000+ five-star reviews. Find out why people are so intrigued by this thrilling dystopian, science fiction epic. You won’t believe the twists and turns this saga takes!

Really enjoyed this series. It kind of reminded me a bit if the Enders game books. If you liked Enders game, you’ll probably like these books.
It’s been two years and four months since I’ve read The Amber Project, the first book in The Variant Saga series. After reading the other three books, Transient Echoes, Hope Everlasting, and The Vernal Memory, nothing has changed. I love the entire series, with The Amber Project (probably) being my favorite book. A fantastic sci-fi, dystopian read worthy of my recommendation!
The beginning is a little hard to get into, but once you are a 1/3 into the book is gets really interesting.
I found the starting point of this sci-fi story so intriguing, that I was glued to it all through the sequence. It was masterfully developed, the reader had to keep their fingers crossed for the main characters. And the making of the different worlds was also a major attraction, not lacking in the twists and turns required of a good action book. All in all a minimum of 5 stars.
This is a long three book saga that has its ups and downs. Their is enough material here for a six book run and I think that had story lines been pared down and streamlined the readability would have improved. As it was there were times I began to lose interest as the story line moved away from center into unnecessary complications and convolutions. The science at times borders on fantasy and the reader has to take a leap of faith to accept some of the actions the people and the machines are supposedly capable of.
All that being said, I did read the entire saga and was satisfied with the how the plot was handled and the final outcome. I would certainly check the latest offerings from this author to see what is new.
Unique premise and well written. The characters draw you in.
Good read. Nice plot and character development
Awesome saga…keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Good story. Not the same old science fiction. Fun to read.
Great series for light reading if you are a sucker for dystopian fiction.
Cool twist on the apocalyptic theme. Reads more like Victorian romance than dead-Earth fiction. The wonderland on the other side of this “rabbit hole” is worth experiencing.
Very thoughtful book. The third book feels very different from the first two. More like the sci-fi books I’ve read from the 70’s. Still enjoyed it.
Hopefully I will be able to read more in this series
A very good book and I am looking forward to more.
Pretty far out, but thought provoking.
I like science fiction books these were good
Very good story and characters that are easy to admire.
It started out strong, but kind of fell apart, and then became just about impossible to keep straight.
The story was interesting, however way too much ink put into the inventive way the past was improved upon. Would have preferred more story about the characters.
I really liked this series. Well rounded – believable characters in a bad situation. Good mystery about what actually brought down the world and a good lesson on population control after a world wide disaster.
