From New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz comes a gripping new romantic suspense trilogy fraught with danger and enigma. Decades ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, The Incident occurred: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases. The residents slept for two days. When they woke up they discovered that things had changed—they had changed. Some started having … Some started having visions. Others heard ominous voices. And then, scientists from a mysterious government agency arrived. Determined not to become research subjects of strange experiments, the residents of Fogg Lake blamed their “hallucinations” on food poisoning, and the story worked. But now it has become apparent that the eerie effects of The Incident are showing up in the descendants of Fogg Lake.…
Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair, best friends and co-owners of an investigation firm in Seattle, use what they call their “other sight” to help solve cases. When Olivia suddenly vanishes one night, Cat frantically begins the search for her friend. No one takes the disappearance seriously except Slater Arganbright, an agent from a shadowy organization known only as the Foundation, who shows up at her firm with a cryptic warning.
A ruthless killer is hunting the only witnesses to a murder that occurred in the Fogg Lake caves fifteen years ago—Catalina and Olivia. And someone intends to make both women vanish.

I love this author
I don’t know why I have never read a Jayne Ann Krentz novel until this one. I know she has wrote romantic suspense for years. I grabbed this at my local library, bc a friend said it was good.
The book is based on the paranormal, which I usually don’t care for. I enjoyed this one though. It’s about 2 girls that witness a murder 15 years earlier in a town called Fogg Lake.
Fogg Lake’s residents have special skills. When Catalonia and Olivia witness this murder, everyone in town tells them they were just hallucinating. Well, maybe they weren’t bc 15 years later, Olivia has disappeared. Catalonia and her are investigating partners, and as soon as Olivia goes missing, Catalonia goes into action.
The Foundation, who has done Catalonia wrong in the past, just happens to have an agent, Slater in town. Is this a coincidence or something else? Can Catalonia even trust Slater? What will they uncover in their search for Olivia? Do yourself a favor and grab the book, and find out?
Jayne Anne Krentz, has written another fabulous story of murder, paranormal artifacts, living a paranormal life, kidnapping, and love.
The Vanishing gives me the memories of other worlds. Other cave systems. Other strong paranormal powers and strong love. But I knew I was here and now.
All the small touches of Fogg Lake keep the paranormal alive. From the inhabitants to the foliage.
I look forward to returning to Fogg Lake and discovering more about this wonderful, mysterious town. And, what else is in the cave.
The Vanishing by Jayne Ann Krentz was a super beginning to the Fogg Lake series. I honestly could not put the book down.
Catalina and Olivia are from a small community called Fogg Lake where it is normal to have paranormal talents. I felt like I had come home again being in Ms. Krentz’s paranormal world since I’ve read every one of her Arcane books. A suspenseful plot, several twists and well developed characters made this a perfect read for me.
I received a copy of this book from my public library.
If you’re looking for an ORIGINAL story line, this is it!
Fogg Lake, a remote location in the Pacific Northwest has a secret. They were once part of an experimental lab looking into paranormal abilities and activity. There was a catastrophic accident, the location was abandoned, and some of the people who live in Fogg Lake now, have paranormal abilities!
Catalina and Olivia have grown up in Fogg Lake. They don’t trust outsiders. They do feel the need to do as so many youngsters of Fogg lake have done and stay overnight in the caves surrounding the lake. Their fear of strangers is realized when they witness a murder, but no one in town believes them. They’re told to forget about it because they only THINK they saw a murder.
Fast forward to Catalina and Olivia using their particular psychic abilities to open a private investigation business. When Olivia is abducted, seemingly for no reason, Catalina is tasked with finding her and keeping her from harm. Because the psychic community polices its own, Slater, a possibly damaged psychic is sent to help with the investigation.
There are so many twists and turns in this book. Suspense regarding the experimental lab. Romance between Catalina and Slater. The whole town of Fogg Lake and their quirky attitudes. So much to like and knowing this is the first book in the Fogg Lake series, I’m a very happy reader!
I am a fan of Jayne Ann Krentz and all her pen names! I was given a paperback ARC by the publisher and purchased a hard cover copy. Jayne Ann Krentz is an auto-buy author for me, and her books are on my ‘keeper’ shelf!
Back to the world of Arcane. Sort of. It is Arcane lite. But Yay! Yay! Let’s hear it for paranormal talents and a new series.
Wow !!!! You will be saying the same thing after you read this novel!!
Jayne Ann Krentz has me on the edge of my seat from the beginning all the way to the unpredictable ending.
I started this novel tonight and couldn’t put it down. I finished it in less than 3 hours!
Fogg Lake and the mysteries surrounding this town were exhilarating and mystical. The characters were exciting and captivating.
I was truly entranced with “The Vanishing”.
This is a must read, you do not want to miss this one !!! I am anxiously waiting for the next book in this trilogy.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for fair and honest review.
This. Was. Disappointing. I cannot even comprehend what I just read–mostly. The supernatural element kind of was a waste…at least I didn’t see a point in it. I didn’t see a point in the book period. Without the supernatural element, I felt like I’ve read the book before. I love romance but the same tropes over and over again without much originality to them is getting a little old.
Krentz does not let you down in this mystery about a rather quirky town and it’s secret past. I did not guess the solution, love that in a book.
Catalina and Olivia witnessed a murder 15 years ago and all of a sudden Olivia vanishes. The events have to be connected. Someone from the Foundation suddenly appears in town offering to help. Catalina doesn’t trust anyone from the Foundation, but she needs help finding Olivia. Catalina and Olivia come from a very secretive town, Fogg Lake. Catalina and Slater go back to the beginning to find out what happened to Olivia. That means going back to Fogg Lake. The residents are not really willing to help a stranger, but will will help Catalina. They were sure that she and Olivia were hallucinating all those years ago. That there wasn’t really a murder as there seemed to be no evidence. Can they find Olivia?
Pretty good story from a favorite author. Not quite as much romance as usual but still good story.
I enjoyed Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick for quite a while. I am burning out. In every book she relies on “intuition”. Getting old.
Jayne Ann Krentz delivers another well-written adventurous tale in “The Vanishing”. I’m a longtime fan, having read Krentz for years (cough, decades) and Jayne always delivers an action-packed, entertaining, thrilling good time. The only drama is will the heroine (Catalina) & hero (Slater) escape from murderers and solve the crime? Yes, it is guaranteed (totally not a spoiler!) but that means there’s no time for sappy “does he/she love me” “does he/she love me not” drivel. So, if you’re not in to that and are looking for a standalone, interesting, romantic adventure, JAK’s “The Vanishing” is right for you!
Good.
great story will keep your attention..could keep you reading all night
Several decades ago there was an explosion in the cave system in the small town of Fogg Lake. The residents of the town were changed as they became psychics in a variety of ways. When scientists from a secret government agency showed up, the residents claimed the hallucinations were simply from food poisoning and they were left alone. The town is a place where electronics don’t work and it’s a hard place to get to. The residents soon learned that their psychic abilities were being passed on to their descendants.
Catalina Lark and Olivia LeClair are best friends who grew up in Fogg Lake but now have their own investigation agency in Seattle. When Olivia disappears one night, Catalina is immediately suspicious and begins looking for her. She finds a witness who saw Olivia being kidnapped and drugged. Catalina determines she’s going to have to call the agency known as the Foundation for help but doesn’t want to due to a bad experience with them six months ago. She’s taken by surprise when Slater Arganbright shows up as his uncle is the head of the Foundation. It turns out that Olivia’s kidnapping is connected to the deaths of two men who collected psychic artifacts as well as the murder the two girls witnessed fifteen years earlier in the caves of Fogg Lake which no one believed at the time.
I love Jayne Ann Krentz’s books and this one is no exception. I was drawn in from the beginning and kept hooked until the end. The writing is superb with characters that are wonderfully written. I am eagerly waiting for more books in this series. I highly recommend this book.
One of my favorite authors. I loved the chemistry between the two main characters.
This book is very much like Ms. Krentz’s “Arcane” series. In fact, I felt like I had read it before but since it is new it must be that it’s a tried concept and storyline. Simply okay but not great. It was like finding comfortable old slippers in the back of the closet.
This is the first book in JAX’s latest trilogy. Similar to her Arcane series. The Fog Lake setting and backstory creates an intriguing storyline. The romance is passive but there are sparks between Catalina and Slate. Slate’s powers are interesting. It’s an entertaining read…
Love this series and happy she has returned to writing a paranormal. Loved the characters and the plot. Can’t wait to read the next installment.
